  • Soviet File Given to Luna Proves a KGB Operation

Hat tip: Randy Owen published a comparison of the Oswald letters on Facebook, and Paul Hoch sent me additional information. The recent release of a Soviet Union file regarding the JFK assassination that was released by Congresswoman Luna solves two JFK mysteries. Included in the file was this letter by Lee Harvey Oswald to the American Embassy in 1960. It is described in the listing as: Letter from L. H. Oswald to the Consular Section of the US Embassy with a request to be informed about his possible return to the USA. December 1960//Central Archives of the Republic of Belarus. Now check out the infamous Oswald letter to a Mr. Hunt: The first paragraph of the Hunt letter is the same as the 1960 Oswald letter -- including the same misspelling of the word "concerning." Paul Hoch notes that "the second paragraph of the Hunt letter, with strange language which had some of us wondering what the forger was trying to imply (an allusion to an assassination operation?), turns out to be verbatim from Oswald." So, this is confirmation that the Dear Mr. Hunt letter was indeed a KGB operation. They forged the writing, language and spelling of the 1960 Oswald letter to try and prove that E,. Howard Hunt, and thus the CIA, was tied to the JFK assassination. The Americans never received Oswald's December, 1960 letter: I wrote an article about the existence of KGB operations to influence the American public and here is an excerpt about the Hoax: The ‘Oswald Letter’ The recently declassified CIA documents mentioned above details another interesting KGB operation (also described in the Mitrokhin archive). In 1975, copies of a note that purported to be from Lee Harvey Oswald were sent from Mexico to three American conspiracy theorists. The letter, dated November 8, 1963, was addressed to a Mr. Hunt and said, “I would like information regarding my position” and “am suggesting that we discuss the matter fully before any steps are taken by me or anyone else.” The note, however, was part of a Russian intelligence operation codenamed ‘Arlington.’ It was a Soviet forgery designed, the CIA document explains, to exploit “an assassination theory that was widespread in the US, according to which theory Howard HUNT, a former CIA employee, who was convicted in 1974 in connection with the Watergate affair, participated in 1963 in organizing a plot, the victim of which was President KENNEDY.” The KGB wrote the note using “individual phrases and expressions taken from letters written by Oswald during his stay in the USSR” on “a scrap of writing paper that OSWALD used in Texas.” Furthermore, “the note was on two occasions subjected to graphological and chronological examination ‘for authenticity’ by the Third Section of the KGB’s OUT (Operational-Technical Directorate).” The note was then sent to assassination theorists Harold Weisberg, Penn Jones, and Howard Roffman. It was accompanied by another note saying that the document had been sent to FBI director Kelly and that he “has to date not done anything with this document.” The idea was to have the researchers ask the FBI to “produce the original note” and when Kelly denied he had received it, “this would encourage the investigator even more to obtain the desired document.” The operation was “carried out in such a way as to fuel [the flames of suspicion] with fresh news and to expose the participation of the American special services in the liquidation of KENNEDY.” The problem for the KGB was that the conspiracy theorists tended to assume that the Oswald letter was intended for H.L. Hunt, the Texas oil billionaire, rather than for E. Howard Hunt, the former CIA operative. The first references to the document appeared in 1977, and the New York Times noted its possible authenticity. Amusingly, the CIA document notes that “the FCD’s disinformation service believed that OSWALD’s connection with HUNT the millionaire, rather than with HUNT, the CIA officer, was purposely played up in the American press in order to divert public attention from OSWALD’s contacts with the special services.” The Oswald letter was later investigated by the House Select Committee on Assassinations which concluded that the letter was “much more precisely and much more carefully written” than other writings of Lee Harvey Oswald. They also professd themselves puzzled that Oswald’s middle name was misspelled—something he was not known to do—and were thus uncertain as to whether it was an authentic document. We now know that it was simply another operation designed to sow distrust and confusion. This document discusses the "Arlington" operation: The files I really want to see from the Russians relate to the monitoring of Oswald while he lived in Minsk, as well as the files that detail the various KGB operations to deceive the American public.

  • On the Trail of Delusion, Episode 25 with Dale K. Myers

It was a pleasure talking with Dale Myers about the Tippit shooting, JFK assassination conspiracy theories and his journey from believing in a conspiracy to knowing that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin. Dale is THE expert on the J. D. Tippit shooting. His book, With Malice: Lee Harvey Oswald and the Murder of Officer J. D. Tippit, is a must-have in any JFK assassination library. You might have trouble finding a hardcover copy of his second edition, but you can download it here in Kindle format. • The Reuben Efron Story, Once Again!

Jefferson Morley's Substack JFK Facts keeps on repeating certain stories which makes me think he is running out of material on the assassination. For instance, for the umpteenth time JFK Facts discusses Reuben Efron. As I have shown earlier, Efron is not "the man who read Lee Harvey Oswald's mail." Jefferson Morley's Claims about Reuben Efron Morley Claim. --   The CIA was reading Oswald's mail. Fact. --  True, but the focus on Oswald as a target is misleading. The CIA ran a program called HT-Lingual  which intercepted some mail going to and coming from the Soviet Union. On November 9, 1959, Lee Harvey Oswald's name was added to the watch list because of his defection to the Soviet Union. The Church Committee estimated that 75% of the letters that were opened were chosen at random, not because the name was on the watch list.  The program intercepted a letter from Marguerite Oswald to her son and that was it. After the assassination, additional items of potential relevance to the assassination investigation were recovered from the HT-Lingual files, but those additional items did not include any correspondence to or from Oswald himself.   Morley Claim. --  This new document shows that Reuben Efron read Oswald's mail for 20 months. Fact. --  All the document shows is that Efron read Marguerite Oswald's letter to Lee Harvey Oswald (perhaps for the first time) after learning of his impending return in a 1962 Washington Post  article . It is not clear where Morley's "20 months" comes from. The dates he cited cover less than 14 months. Paul Hoch sent me an email with a very good question about Nagle's article. Does not Efron's forwarding of Marguerite Oswald's letter (when Oswald's return was in the news) argue against the claim that they read Oswald's mail for years? If they had actually been reading Oswald's mail for years, wouldn't this letter have been shared with someone like Ann Egerter , a member of Angleton's counterintelligence staff and a member of its Special Intelligence Group, much earlier? Nagle also repeats that claim that Efron's name was only just released: It is astonishing that the CIA would conceal Efron’s identity for so long, even if it had something incriminating or embarrassing to hide. After all, as noted, Efron and his wife had no children, which meant inquiring JFK researchers couldn’t come calling on any direct next of kin for information after the couple were dead. But that is just not true: Morley Claim. --  This was the first time that "the CIA had ever disclosed that Efron read Oswald's mail and that he was a CIA employee." Fact. -- Efron's name was released in 2017 in this testimony before the HSCA , In fact, James Angleton was asked about Efron during his HSCA testimony.  Here is another document which was made public in 1998 ,  which shows that Efron translated and circulated a post-assassination (1964) letter from Marina Oswald. In addition, John Newman mentioned Efron (as Ephron) in his 2017 book Countdown to Darkness .   And this conclusion from Nagle is just plain ridiculous: When the CIA finally admitted publicly that Efron worked for its counterintelligence chief a year and a half before the assassination — monitoring the man who would be accused of single-handedly conceiving and carrying out the crime — researchers began to wonder more and more about what kind of relationship Reuben Efron had, if any, to JFK’s murder. But as I have shown, Reuben Efron wasn't monitoring Oswald, and just what kind of relationship could he have had "to JFK's murder." • The Bar and Jim Garrison

Indeed, Garrison even told the press that he could ignore Judge Haggerty's guidelines on pre-trial publicity: New Orleans Times-Picayune, March 30, 1967 Money Quote : The DA, after Robertson had left, was asked about a statement that he, as district attorney, was not bound by guidelines set by Judge Haggerty as an attempt to prevent pre-judicial publicity concerning Shaw's trial. Garrison said it was his opinion that "the judge was just making a suggestion when he handed out the guidelines. The District Attorney can make any statements he wishes." In late March, Haggerty told the press that he was going to revisit some of the publicity guidelines from the preliminary hearing: New Orleans States=Item, March 24, 1967 Here is what Haggerty said on the guidelines for pretrial publicity: New Orleans Times-Picayune, March 28, 1967 Haggerty was not happy in June, 1967: Miami Herald, June 23, 1967 The issue really came to head in early 1968 with the publication of an article by Jerrold Footlick . Garrison told Footlick that "there is no way that Clay Shaw can get an acquittal." Shaw's attorney's filed a motion for change of venue which was denied by Judge Haggerty. • Mel Ayton, R. I. P.

It was very sad to hear the news that Mel Ayton has just died of cancer. His books on the JFK and RFK assassination are must-haves in any library. His current book on Sirhan Sirhan and his family is an important piece of work. Mel helps us understand the angry Sirhan Sirhan who was furious at RFK for supporting arms sales to Israel. This book has material you won't see elsewhere. Here is a good article on some of Mel's work. The last email I received from Mel was in July. We had been discussing an interview for my podcast series, and it was to be a joint appearance with Dan Moldea to discuss the RFK assassination. I was just waiting for the two of them to be available together. Here is a portion of the email that Mel sent to me in July: I’ve been following you for some time and used your website posts, along with Steve Roe’s, in my attempts to show how ridiculous DiEugenio et al have skewered the evidence and fooled millions of people in the US. I read your ’teenage freak’ book some years ago! Brilliant! I’m looking forward to reading what will amount to a devastating critique of Jim Garrison in your new book [A Heritage of Nonsense]. You and I both know he was a charlatan of the first order. Dan Moldea and I have been friends for many years and I credit him with being the first writer to explain why mistakes by the LAPD and the problems arising with Sirhan’s gun and other anomalies attached to the RFK case resulted in the many conspiracy theories spreading. I knew Dan was a believer in the mob-did-it JFK assassination story but that hasn’t interfered with our friendship. Here is Mel's review of On the Trail of Delusion -- Jim Garrison: The Great Accuser. I will try to interview Dan Moldea on my podcast to discuss the RFK assassination and his friendship with Mel Ayton. You can read Moldea's post on Mel right here. Mel Ayton, R.I.P.

  • On the Trail of Delusion, Episode 24 with Larry Haapanen

It was a pleasure talking with Dr. Larry Haapanen, an historian and Professor at Lewis-Clark State College, who has long been involved in JFK assassination research. Back in the late 1960s and 1970s, he worked on the Garrison investigation looking into people like Clint Wheat and Fred Crisman. Larry was also a researcher for the U.S. Air Force's Project Blue Book which investigated UFOs. Larry was kind enough to provide a blurb for my book, On the Trail of Delusion -- Jim Garrison: The Great Accuser. Fred Litwin has conducted his own after-crash review of the Garrison investigation, pinpointing where it went wrong at every step. • On The Trail of Delusion, Episode 23 with Adam Gorightly

It was a blast talking with author Adam Gorightly about Kerry Thornley, Thomas Beckham, Fred Crisman, and Raymond Broshears. Adam has written some very good books -- including two on Kerry Thornley. I highly recommend Caught in the Crossfire: Kerry Thornley, Lee Oswald and the Garrison Investigation: This book is a goldmine -- full of primary documents and some original writing by Kerry Thornley. • Jefferson Morley's William Harvey Nothingburger, Continued

Hat tip: Larry Haapanen found a listing for Charles F. Niles. Jefferson Morley's Substack makes the incredible allegation that Charles F. Niles, the person to whom the CIA memo about FAA accreditation for William Harvey was addressed, didn't actually exist . JFK Facts conducted an exhaustive search of genealogy records, newspaper archives, and obituary databases in an effort to find any Charles Niles who might have worked at the aviation agency in the early 1960s. No information turned up to indicate that such a person ever existed. The name Charles F. Niles does match that of an early aviation pioneer and daredevil pilot who died in 1916 following a crash at an exhibition in Wisconsin. Thus, if the name Charles F. Niles on the CIA’s request for fake credentials is itself a fake name (a pseudonym in CIA lingo), then to whom exactly did Harvey appeal for help in traveling with FAA credentials? Here is the memo once again : But here is a listing for Charles F. Niles : This was taken from the Official Register of the United States for 1959: Here is another listing for Charles F. Niles : This was taken from the October 1968 Civil Rights Directory: Well, so much for JFK Facts "exhaustive search." • James DiEugenio on Permindex: A Case Study, Part Three

Ferenc Nagy served as Prime Minister of Hungary from 1946 until his forced resignation in 1947. James DiEugenio claims there was a link between the OAS and Ferenc Nagy who was the nominal president of Permindex : There was another side to Permindex/CMC. As William Davy notes in his book about Jim Garrison, Ferenc Nagy was a close acquaintance to, and supportive of, Jacques Soustelle. (Let Justice be Done, p. 99) Soustelle had been the governor-general of Algeria and had worked for President Charles DeGaulle. But he had broken with the president over his policy of an independence solution to the war with Algerian rebels—a policy which President Kennedy had advocated since 1957. Soustelle had traveled to Washington in the early sixties and met with CIA officers. He was pleading for support for the OAS, a group of breakaway military officers trying to overthrow and/or kill DeGaulle. According to Andrew Tully in his book CIA: The Inside Story, the meeting was a success. Many years later, it was revealed to the Church Committee that the Agency had aided in a scheme to assassinate DeGaulle. (Chicago Tribune, June 15, 1975) I thought it would be interested to check DiEugenio's sources. The claim that Nagy was a close acquaintance, and supportive of Jacques Soustelle of the OAS comes from William Davy's book, Let Justice Be Done . Here is the quote from Davy's book: (page 99) Ferenc Nagy was a close friend and supporter of one Jacques Soustelle. A former deGaulle [sic] propaganda chief, Soustelle eventually broke with the general over his Algerian policy. Davy's footnote says that "Soustelle background information is taken mostly from Andrew Tully, CIA: The Inside Story (New York: William Morrow, 1962) and Flammonde, p. 217) There is just one paragraph on Soustelle in Tully's book and it makes no reference to Nagy and/or Permindex. However, Paris Flammonde's book, The Kennedy Conspiracy , has this paragraph on pages 216 - 217: Ferenc Nagy, who, while premier of Hungary, was "compelled by Communists in key government positions to expel from his party various of its members who had been arrested for plotting ... against the government," and who, while on a trip to Switzerland on Mary 29, 1947, telephoned his resignation to Budapest, moved in shadowy areas of finance and politics. "President of Permindex and Board Member of the CMC," reports Paese Sera, "[he] was said by the French press to be a munificent contributor to the philo-fascistic movement of [Jacques] Soustelle, and [a] patron of far-right movements throughout Europe, including Italy." Surprise, surprise, Flammonde's source is the communist-controlled newspaper Paese Sera !   Here is an excerpt from their March 4, 1967, article:   As you can see, they claim it "was said by the French press" that there was a relationship between Nagy and Soustelle. But can anybody find the actual reference? Conspiracy theorists aren't bothered by unsourced allegations. But more skeptical readers would be. Perhaps this is why DiEugenio needs to disguise the source of his allegation. All Permindex roads lead to Paese Sera. By the way, DiEugenio is wrong about his allegation that the CIA aided in a scheme to kill French President Charles de Gaulle. • Ruth Paine's Mother Writes Vincent Salandria

I found this letter in the files of Maggie Field, one of the early JFK assassination investigators. Mrs. Hyde sounds like a thoughtful person who was horrified by the nonsense being spouted by Salandria. Of course Salandria thought that Josiah Thomson was a CIA agent: Is Josiah Thompson a CIA Agent?   Vince Salandria accuses Josiah Thompson of being a CIA agent. Is Josiah Thompson a CIA agent? Part Two A letter from Salandria to Raymond Marcus about Thompson. Here is a note that Sylvia Meagher wrote about a phone conversation with Vince Salandria in 1965 -- the last paragraph is about the Paines. Here are some more of Salandria's views on the Paines: So, the Paines were a necessary part of the conspiracy to kill Kennedy and to frame Oswald. Probability theory precludes that the Paines had not been selected to play their roles but had randomly and by happenstance performed them. It also necessarily follows that since the Paines had been assigned their roles by the assassins, the Paines could serve as beacons showing the way to identify the conspirators who had selected them. It was to confirm the identity of the forces behind Kennedy’s assassination that I was eager to get to know the Paines. • Jefferson Morley's Latest William Harvey Nothingburger

William Harvey Hat tip: Robert Reynolds, the preeminent expert on the JFK assassination files , provided a lot of the research for this article. Jefferson Morley has done it again! He's come up with another nothingburger. We predicted that there would be nothingburgers coming from the requests for Bill Harvey's travel records. And I was right. While the CIA is looking for William Harvey's travel records, they did come up with this document : The article on Morley's Substack says the following about this document: The document about Harvey’s FAA credential reveals two new facts about his involvement in the events of 1963, neither known previously. Harvey was authorized to travel undercover in the United States while he was serving as chief of the CIA station in Rome. The CIA did not disclose this arrangement to Senate investigators in the 1970s. Well, why wouldn't William Harvey travel within the United States? He only took up the post of Rome Chief of Station in June, 1963. But how about the ridiculous headline -- "Did CIA Assassination Chief Bill Harvey Travel to Dallas under FAA Cover?" There is absolutely no basis for this in the memo above. This is a totally baseless claim, and it flies in the face of common sense. Robert Reynolds wonders "why would CIA register their officers' names with the FAA? Cover documents from the State Department or the Army HAD to be arranged with State and/or Army, because they asserted that the subject was employed by the State or Army." Is Morley trying to say that Harvey was nominally an employee of the FAA? Was he supposed to be a pilot or ground crew? So, what's really going on here? Well, it may well involve Harvey's possession of a firearm . He was issued two CIA Firearms Credentials. Here is a memo that discusses the need for credentials for firearms : There is another possibility. FAA Credentials might have been necessary to transport classified material , although I really don't know the rules governing classified materials in 1963. Morleys Substack also claims that "the CIA did not disclose this arrangement to Senate investigators in the 1970s." All of this material was in Bill Harvey's OS file and the file was shown to Dan Hardway of the HSCA, so at least House investigators knew about the memo: We don't really know exactly what material Senate investigators saw, but anybody who checked Harvey's OS file would have seen that memo. Morley's Substack article also makes the allegation that Harvey had multiple aliases of William Walker: This response, the new documents show, was misleading: Harvey was approved to use the William Walker alias after he was reassigned in June 1963. On June 18, 1963, while Harvey was heading to Rome, the CIA’s Office of Security sent the Technical Services Division a request for not one, but two, separate aliases in the name of William Walker. Harvey had an US. Army credential of William Walker for use in Task Force W (the CIA working group on Cuba affairs), and to be used within the domestic United States: Harvey also had similar CIA credentials: Harvey also had CIA credentials using the alias William Walker for "operational domestic contacts." Morley's Substack article makes a big deal out of a statement to the Church Committee : It shows that Harvey did not stop using the alias William Walker in June 1963, as the CIA claimed. In fact, the new documents show Harvey requested two new aliases that month, and that they were delivered six weeks later. But Harvey did not request "two new aliases. The CIA provided Harvey with pocket identification of William Walker for two separate addresses. Indianapolis was Harvey's home town and his mother and other family members lived there. There also might have been a family connection to Detroit. This is not really a new alias. In any event, once again Morley has come up with another nothingburger. My conclusion from July still stands : More nothingburgers are on the way. Once these files reveal nothing, Morley will demand more files from the CIA and the FBI. How long Congresswoman Luna will keep going along with these requests remains to be seen. Previous Relevant Blog Posts on William Harvey Jefferson Morley is Wrong on William Harvey, Again!
