Ferenc Nagy served as Prime Minister of Hungary from 1946 until his forced resignation in 1947.
Ferenc Nagy served as Prime Minister of Hungary from 1946 until his forced resignation in 1947.

There was another side to Permindex/CMC. As William Davy notes in his book about Jim Garrison, Ferenc Nagy was a close acquaintance to, and supportive of, Jacques Soustelle. (Let Justice be Done, p. 99) Soustelle had been the governor-general of Algeria and had worked for President Charles DeGaulle. But he had broken with the president over his policy of an independence solution to the war with Algerian rebels—a policy which President Kennedy had advocated since 1957. Soustelle had traveled to Washington in the early sixties and met with CIA officers. He was pleading for support for the OAS, a group of breakaway military officers trying to overthrow and/or kill DeGaulle. According to Andrew Tully in his book CIA: The Inside Story, the meeting was a success. Many years later, it was revealed to the Church Committee that the Agency had aided in a scheme to assassinate DeGaulle. (Chicago Tribune, June 15, 1975)

I thought it would be interested to check DiEugenio's sources. The claim that Nagy was a close acquaintance, and supportive of Jacques Soustelle of the OAS comes from William Davy's book, Let Justice Be Done.

Here is the quote from Davy's book: (page 99)

Ferenc Nagy was a close friend and supporter of one Jacques Soustelle. A former deGaulle [sic] propaganda chief, Soustelle eventually broke with the general over his Algerian policy.

Davy's footnote says that "Soustelle background information is taken mostly from Andrew Tully, CIA: The Inside Story (New York: William Morrow, 1962) and Flammonde, p. 217)

There is just one paragraph on Soustelle in Tully's book and it makes no reference to Nagy and/or Permindex.

However, Paris Flammonde's book, The Kennedy Conspiracy, has this paragraph on pages 216 - 217:

Ferenc Nagy, who, while premier of Hungary, was "compelled by Communists in key government positions to expel from his party various of its members who had been arrested for plotting ... against the government," and who, while on a trip to Switzerland on Mary 29, 1947, telephoned his resignation to Budapest, moved in shadowy areas of finance and politics. "President of Permindex and Board Member of the CMC," reports Paese Sera, "[he] was said by the French press to be a munificent contributor to the philo-fascistic movement of [Jacques] Soustelle, and [a] patron of far-right movements throughout Europe, including Italy."

Surprise, surprise, Flammonde's source is the communist-controlled newspaper Paese Sera!

As you can see, they claim it "was said by the French press" that there was a relationship between Nagy and Soustelle. But can anybody find the actual reference?

Conspiracy theorists aren't bothered by unsourced allegations. Butmore skeptical readers would be. Perhaps this is why DiEugenio needs to disguise the source of his allegation.

All Permindex roads lead to Paese Sera.

Information in a Time-Life memo originated from Paese Sera.

A purported CIA memo is actually the notes of an HSCA researcher.

Many books maintain that the President of Permindex, Ferenc Nagy, lived in Dallas in 1963. He actually lived in Herndon, Virginia.

The book Coup in Dallas gets Permindex all wrong, and with no footnotes.

Was Montreal lawyer Louis Bloomfield running an assassination bureau?

Louis Bloomfield was a good man who raised a lot of money for Canadian charities. Unfortunately, conspiracy theorists have linked him to the JFK assassination.

The memo only quotes from Pease Sera.

The information that Shaw lived in Rome and worked for the CIA originated with Paese Sera.

Clay Shaw was on the Board of Directors of Permindex. Here is his file.

If Jim Garrison wanted to learn more about Louis Bloomfield, all he had to do was pick up the phone or go to Montreal.

Yes, a conspiracy book actually makes this claim.
