  • Oliver Stone Blames the United States for Putin's Invasion of Ukraine

Oliver Stone, producer of the so-called documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, was recently interviewed on KPFA radio about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. And guess what - he not only blames the United States but then relates it all back to the JFK assassination. In fact, he gets upset that the host wants to talk about Ukraine and not about the assassination. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (from 4:55) Oliver Stone: The United States is not going to stop. This is a great victory for the neoconservatives, for Biden and his group, and Victoria Nuland and that gang, who are really kind of aggressive. The aggression of the United States is going to continue and they're going to win, to a certain degree, they'll go on against China, maybe Taiwan, and with Russia, they can keep putting pressure on Russia, until they get what they want, which seems to be regime change. None of which promises well for the world because it will go to war. Russia is not going to give up. They are a nuclear power and they'll be a nuclear power for a long time. And they are very smart. I don't see it ending well. Unless we change our attitude. As I say at the end of, you didn't read the last paragraph, because to me, it's a shame. That we never got along. We could have gotten along, if we hadn't been hardheaded about it. And hated them so much since 1918. We could have been a grand partnership. It could have been us and them. With China too. But there was no reason after the 1990s to go to war, to go to this mentality, that we had to destroy this government. They were not communists, even if they were, they were not communists, they were capitalists. And that's what they wanted. They wanted to join and be part of the European experiment. It's a shame, from the beginning, and the last paragraph I write about it. It's heartbreaking. There was no need for this. And America was not even under threat. We had two oceans. Doing well, Why did we create tension? Because of the military-industrial complex. Because of the money. Because of the budgets. Who else is driving this country? We are under the control of this military autonomy, as well as intelligence agencies. I thought we were going to talk about JFK, because it ties into the JFK documentary, that was released. Right. That's what you told me. This is the great political thinker who can tell us the truth about the JFK assassination? He's blaming the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the United States. He even says "they'll go against China, maybe Taiwan." Maybe Taiwan? Has Oliver Stone not noticed that Taiwan is under threat from China? Does Oliver Stone not realize that Russia is not a capitalist country - it's an oligarchical kleptocracy. I found it hard to listen to the whole show. But at no point does Oliver Stone show any concern for people of Ukraine. And then he said this: (22:39) Oliver Stone: Maybe it's time. America has lost its mind. So maybe it's time that we do blow ourselves up. Or else blow up the other side. But then we're going to be blown up too. Cathy Young has written a terrific piece on "Putin’s Bogus Blame-NATO Excuse." Notably, too, the NATO enlargement that began in the 1990s did bring Russia into NATO-adjacent structures: first the Partnership for Peace program in 1994, then the NATO-Russia Council in 2002. Both not only provided a framework for military cooperation—including NATO assistance to Russia in such areas as job training for decommissioned officers—but stipulated that NATO would consult Russia about its security concerns and possible threats. NATO-Russia cooperation was only suspended in 2014 after Russia’s annexation of Crimea and (first) invasion of Ukraine. George W. Bush has been criticized for his push to get Ukraine and Georgia on a NATO membership track in 2008 (over objections from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom). But it is worth noting that by then, the Kremlin had already undertaken a number of aggressive actions in response to those countries’ “color revolutions,” which ousted pro-Moscow regimes and sought more radical reform. Should we blame the West? Blame-the-West narratives often claim that Russia was never given a real chance to integrate into the free world because the United States, drunk on Cold War triumphalism, treated it as a defeated enemy rather than a partner. But this is a highly skewed and selective account of history after the Soviet collapse. It leaves out massive Western economic aid to Russia (totaling $55 billion just in 1992-1997 alone, not counting private charity and business investments). It leaves out the extent to which Boris Yeltsin, the first president of independent Russia, was treated as a hero in the United States early on; his cordial relationship with Bill Clinton—whose first trip abroad as president, in April 1993, included a meeting with Yeltsin in Vancouver—became a symbol of the new partnership between the two countries. In the mid-1990s, CIA reports detailing rampant corruption in the Yeltsin administration and the pocketing of aid money by high-level officials were reportedly rudely snubbed by Vice President Al Gore. And, as a show of political respect, Russia was included in the annual forum for leaders of the world’s top industrial democracies—first in an informal “G7+1” arrangement, then from 1998 onward as a full member of the G8—despite the fact that neither its economic performance nor the state of its political institutions qualified it for membership. While the United States and the other democracies certainly made their share of mistakes, the main reasons this beautiful friendship went south lay within Russia itself. Among them were the corruption, incompetence, and robber-baron mentality that bedeviled the transition to a market economy; the failure to grapple with, and fully confront, the horrors of the country’s Soviet legacy; the profound ambivalence on whether integration into the West should be seen as liberation or occupation; and the widespread sense that the loss of empire was a humiliation and not being feared was a cause for regret. All these trends began early on, when elections for the Russian State Duma in 1993 and 1995 resulted in a parliament dominated by ultranationalist populists and Communists. Putin harnessed and used that energy in a way that, for a while, made many people in Russia and in the West praise him as a guarantor of moderation and stability. Now, the imperial chickens have come home to roost. NATO had nothing to do with it. If anything, the threat of aggression from Russia was the cause of NATO enlargement, not the other way round. • Celebrities Who Have Been Friendly with Putin

Gene Kosowan’s other names - Pamela Anderson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Conor McGregor, Nikita Mikhalkov, Jack Nicholson, Alex Ovechkin, Mickey Rourke, Steven Seagal, and Donald Trump. Of course, you must include Oliver Stone: For years, producer and director Oliver Stone has often tried to deliver thought-provoking drama aimed at the American establishment's moral superiority with several controversial outings. Sometimes they were gritty ("Platoon"), conspiratorial ("JFK"), or even sensationalistic ("Natural Born Killers"), but in almost every Stone release, you'll find something designed to skewer Uncle Sam where the sun don't shine. Some critics only wished Stone would have done the same thing to Vladimir Putin in the Showtime four-part documentary "The Putin Interviews" when it debuted in 2017. The Daily Beast called it "nothing short of hero worship," while The Hollywood Reporter dismissed the usually fiery Stone as "demure and coquettish." But Stone wasn't apologetic over his apparent kid-gloves treatment of Putin and his abilities as a leader. "The Russian people have never been better off," he said to The Guardian. "But of course in America, they're [the Russians] miserable, dictated to, in stalags, in gulags, they're all being chopped up by this monster. It's just crazy." It should be noted that Stone also produced the documentary "Ukraine on Fire" in 2016 about the country's revolution to dethrone its pro-Russian president only to see Russia annex Crimea in response in 2014. The Hollywood Reporter lambasted the film for its "Kremlin-friendly version of the events." The Wrap reported that "Revealing Ukraine," Stone's follow-up released in 2019, was removed from Ukraine's TV schedules due to a rash of complaints, roughly around the same time the director allegedly asked Putin to be godfather to his adult daughter. • Oliver Stone Says Vladimir Putin Fell into an American Trap

Oliver Stone, producer of the so-called documentary, JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, has long been a mouthpiece for Vladimir Putin. This week he has been strangely silent and people are noticing. One final note: Winter on Fire should not be confused with Ukraine on Fire, an utterly ridiculous piece of Kremlin propaganda worth less than a Russian rouble in which Oliver Stone lobs the softest of questions to Yanukovych while blaming the United States for Ukraine’s ills. It screened on Russian TV but was given short shrift everywhere else. Stone has so far been silent about Russia’s invasion. He should keep it that way. However, yesterday, Oliver Stone finally said something about the Russian invasion of Ukraine: Although the United States has many wars of aggression on its conscience, it doesn’t justify Mr. Putin’s aggression in Ukraine. A dozen wrongs don’t make a right. Russia was wrong to invade. It has made too many mistakes -- 1) underestimating Ukrainian resistance, 2) overestimating the military’s ability to achieve its objective, 3) underestimating Europe’s reaction, especially Germany upping its military contribution to NATO, which they’ve resisted for some 20 years; even Switzerland has joined the cause. Russia will be more isolated than ever from the West. 4) underestimating the enhanced power of NATO, which will now put more pressure on Russia’s borders, 5) probably putting Ukraine into NATO, 6) underestimating the damage to its own economy and certainly creating more internal resistance in Russia, 7) creating a major readjustment of power in its oligarch class, 8 ) putting cluster and vacuum bombs into play, 9) and underestimating the power of social media worldwide. But we must wonder, how could Putin have saved the Russian-speaking people of Donetsk and Luhansk? No doubt his Government could’ve done a better job of showing the world the eight years of suffering of those people and their refugees -- as well as highlighting the Ukrainian buildup of 110,000 soldiers on the Donetsk-Luhansk borders, which was occurring essentially before the Russian buildup. But the West has far stronger public relations than the Russians. Or perhaps Putin should’ve surrendered the two holdout provinces and offered 1-3 million people help to relocate in Russia. The world might’ve understood better the aggression of the Ukrainian Government. But then again, I’m not sure. But now, it’s too late. Putin has allowed himself to be baited and fallen into the trap set by the U.S. and has committed his military, empowering the worst conclusions the West can make. He probably, I think, has given up on the West, and this brings us closer than ever to a Final Confrontation. There seems to be no road back. The only ones happy about this are Russian nationalists and the legion of Russian haters, who finally got what they’ve been dreaming of for years, i.e. Biden, Pentagon, CIA, EU, NATO, mainstream media -- and don’t overlook Nuland and her sinister neocon gang in D.C. This will significantly vindicate the uber hawks in public eyes. Pointing out the toxicity of their policies (Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, NATO expansion, breaking nuclear treaties, censoring and omitting crucial facts from the news, etc.) will be next to impossible. Pointing out Western double standards, including Kyiv and Zelenskyy’s bad behavior, will likewise fall on deaf ears as we again draw the wrong conclusions. It's easier now to smear those of us who tried to understand the Russian position through these last two decades. We tried. But now is the time, as JFK and Khrushchev faced down the perilous situation in Cuba in October 1962, for the two nuclear powers to walk this back from the abyss. Both sides need to save face. This isn’t a moment for the U.S. to gloat. As a Vietnam War veteran and as a man who’s witnessed the endless antagonism of the Cold War, demonizing and humiliating foreign leaders is not a policy that can succeed. It only makes the situation worse. Back-channel negotiations are necessary, because whatever happens in the next few days or weeks, the specter of a final war must be realistically accepted and brokered. Who can do that? Are there real statesmen among us? Perhaps, I pray, Macron. Bring us the likes of Metternich, Talleyrand, Averell Harriman, George Shultz, James Baker, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The great unseen tragedy at the heart of this history of our times is the loss of a true peaceful partnership between Russia and the U.S. -- with, yes, potentially China, no reason why not except America’s desire for dominance. The idiots who kept provoking Russia after the Cold War ended in 1991 have committed a terrible crime against humanity and the future. Together, our countries could’ve been natural allies in the biggest battle of all against climate change. In its technical achievements alone, in large scale science, in its rocketry, heavy industries, and its most modern, clean nuclear energy reactors, Russia has been a great friend to man. Alas, in our century so far, man has failed to see or reach for the stars. It's a pretty ridiculous statements. He talks about the "aggression of the Ukrainian Government." But get this: Putin has allowed himself to be baited and fallen into the trap set by the U.S. and has committed his military, empowering the worst conclusions the West can make. Yes, it was a trap, and Putin fell into it. Really? Oliver Stone believes that the "hawks" are happy about the invasion: The only ones happy about this are Russian nationalists and the legion of Russian haters, who finally got what they’ve been dreaming of for years, i.e. Biden, Pentagon, CIA, EU, NATO, mainstream media -- and don’t overlook Nuland and her sinister neocon gang in D.C. This will significantly vindicate the uber hawks in public eyes. But to Stone, there is a greater tragedy: The great unseen tragedy at the heart of this history of our times is the loss of a true peaceful partnership between Russia and the U.S. -- with, yes, potentially China, no reason why not except America’s desire for dominance. China and Russia are the forces of illiberalism. He doesn't appear to understand that the Russians helped Assad blow Syria to smithereens. Does he not see how Putin has treated dissidents in Russia? His poisoning of several people? His hatred of gay people? As for China, has Oliver Stone not seen what China has done to Hong Kong? Or what has happened to the Uighurs in Xinjiang? Does he not understand what has happened to the people of Tibet? The United States should not partner with illiberalism. And get this: Together, our countries could’ve been natural allies in the biggest battle of all against climate change. Natural allies? China has been building coal-based power plants like crazy. They have no interest in fighting climate change. John Kerry sounded like a fool this past week. There is a humanitarian disaster underway in Ukraine. • The Day Vladimir Putin Fooled Oliver Stone with a Doctored Video

Oliver Stone, producer of the so-called documentary, JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, can be easily fooled. Here is a scene from his documentary The Putin Interviews: Here is a side-by-side comparison of an American video and the video that Putin showed to Oliver Stone: Here is an article on the videos: The 2013 video on YouTube (which is correctly labeled as Americans fighting against Taliban) has been viewed over a million times, so it’s no surprise that it has been recut and re-uploaded for other purposes. The footage that Putin shows Stone appears to have been re-dubbed in Russian and uploaded to YouTube in March of 2016—or at least one version with very few views. It purportedly shows Russian Mi-28 helicopters, according to the YouTube description. But, again, it’s actually from 2009 and shows Apache helicopters. The footage was uploaded to Military.com in 2012. For all we know, Putin actually believes the footage is from Russia’s fight against ISIS. But it’s not. We’ve reached out to Oliver Stone’s representatives for comment this morning and will update this post if we hear back. Oliver Stone did respond on RT - the Russian-controlled network: There is a humanitarian disaster underway in Ukraine. You would think that Oliver Stone would say something about it. • Roger Waters Loves "JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass"

Some people took exception to my post that Oliver Stone's so-called documentary, JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, has been a flop. According to James DiEugenio, people "in high places" are noticing the film: Imagine the excitement that Rogers Waters noticed JFK Revisited. Does he qualify as a person "in high places?" Here is his tweet: Should we be impressed? Most of the replies to his tweet about JFK Revisited were about Ukraine, and they weren't complimentary: Now I should add that Putin is not Hitler; there was only one Hitler and it's always inappropriate use Nazism as the comparison. But I understand the sentiment. Here is Roger Waters shilling for Vladimir Putin, on Oliver Stone's favorite Russian-Controlled Media, RT: (8;04) Roger Waters: So, obviously if you never put a single shilling into public education, you cannot expect people to become educated, particularly if you're bombarding them with propaganda through the mainstream media of 24/7, you know every single second of their lives, you're telling them lies, like all this bullshit about Russia preparing to invade Ukraine which anybody with an IQ above room temperature knows it's nonsense. It's complete fucking ... but they've got lots of tanks near the bo[rder] ... hang on a minute, hang on a minute, they've got lots of tanks in Russia, in their own co[ountry.] Could you imagine if people were building bloody military bases in Mexico and El Salvador and Honduras all pointing guns at the United States, you don't think there'd be a few American tanks on that there, bloody well would be, just to sit there and say if you fucking, if you, there's a bloody nose waiting ... Slightly condescending, no? You have to love how Waters attacks Americans as being supremely ignorant (as he lives more-than-comfortably in the US), while insinuating that anyone who believes what is truly going on with Russia has an IQ below room temperature. Roger Waters is also horribly anti-Israel: He has called Israel an “apartheid state,” accused its government of using “Nazi propaganda efforts,” and labeled Israel as “the worst human rights offender in the world” while conveniently ignoring the rest of the world. Almost every prominent musician who intends to perform in Israel is publicly “exposed” by Waters who routinely urges them to cancel their planned trips. Waters explains his fixation on Israel by his “deep care for human rights” although his voice had not been heard much regarding other lingering geopolitical, religious or ethnic crises. Some people felt he had become antisemitic: Increasingly, anti-Semitic discourse is also seeping into the arts and academia. Consider the anti-Israel and anti-Jewish bigotry of former Pink Floyd front man, Roger Waters. A staunch supporter of the so-called BDS movement, Waters has said about the Palestinians that "parallels with what went on in the 30's in Germany are so crushingly obvious." He also had a pig-shaped balloon with a Star of David on it at one of his concerts. And when asked about his aggressive effort to recruit people to join the BDS, Waters blamed "the Jewish lobby," which he explained is "extraordinary powerful here and particularly in the industry that I work in, the music industry." In 2013, the ADL declared that "anti-Semitic conspiracy theories" had "seeped into the totality" of Waters' views. The people of Ukraine need our help. • Oliver Stone Watches Dr. Strangelove with Vladimir Putin

All the way through this clip, Oliver Stone sucks up to Putin - and continually criticizes the United States. I found it quite sickening to watch. Putin actually lectures Stone of the importance of avoiding unilateral action (1:07) How on earth could Oliver Stone have sucked up to a cretin like Vladimir Putin? The Washington Post noticed: How do you say “bizarre-o” in Russian? Other people are noticing. Putin was openly homophobic in the documentary [his interviews with Vladimir Putin], in addition to being extremely misogynistic while claiming that only women have bad days and that he is far superior. While insisting that he would never shower next to a gay man, Putin gave an incredibly bizarre response: “Why provoke him? But you know, I’m a judo master.” During the production of the documentary, Stone was strangely receptive of many of Putin’s stances and even said that it was wrong to demonise him the way western media did. All those comments have aged very poorly now but given the amount of access that Stone got inside the country, it would be safe to assume that some sort of deal was already in place when Putin agreed to the documentary. And how about this blast from the past? Filmmaker and conspiracy theorist Oliver Stone has made no secret of his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, but now he has taken it to a whole new level by trying to make him his 22-year-old daughter’s godfather. “Does she want to become an Orthodox Christian?” Putin asked when Stone floated the idea during a sit-down in the Kremlin. “We’ll make her that [Orthodox],” Stone replied, according to a transcript of the interview put out by the Kremlin Friday. • JFK Supported Ukrainian Independence

Oliver Stone's so-called documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, makes a big deal out of JFK's anti-imperialist credentials. Indeed, in 1953 JFK published a speech by Lev Dobriansky in the Congressional Record that supported Ukrainian independence. (H/T: Jerry Shinley) Senator John Kennedy wrote: I am familiar and sympathetic with the efforts of the branches of the Ukrainian Congress Committee in Boston, Pittsfield, New Bedford, and other cities in Massachusetts, to keep alive in the United States an understanding of the fact that the Ukraine has a long tradition of independence. Here is the text of Lev Dobriansky's speech: Dobriansky had this to say about Russian and Soviet imperialism: The bondage of Russian imperialism which was ruthlessly imposed on the now 3 million Georgian nation in 1801, on the 10 million Byelorussian nation at the end of the 18th century, on the 25 million Moslem Turk peoples of Turkestan by 1842, on the 3 million Moslem people of Azerbaijan in 1828, on the 10 million non-Russian Cossack peoples in 1708, and on the now 40 million Ukrainian nation in 1783 -- this bondage was destroyed by the sweeping non-Russian revolution for national independence. Large independent republics were established, which for a time even Russia recognized. But it was not long that Russian Bolshevism took off where Tsarist Russian imperialism left off. The newly created states of Lithuania, Estonia and Poland, which today exist in the same state of enslavement to Moscow as do the other non-Russian nations in the Soviet Union, escaped the destructive onslaughts of Soviet Russian imperialism. The independent republics of Ukraine, Byelorussia, Georgia, Turkestan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Cossackia were not as fortunate in this early period of Soviet imperialism. Dobriansky concluded with a plea for independence: As somewhat of an insult to your intelligence, you may hear, too, that the non-Russian peoples do not desire their independence or separation from Russia. Aside from the open historical record, it seems strange, indeed, that peoples in Africa, barely emerging from barbaric conditions, should clamor for their independence, while nations with civilized backgrounds even older than Russia's would be content to be ruled by a power which has dispensed only tyranny. The living expression in the free world of this profound desire for national independence is the greatly organized non-Russian emigrees themselves. What he was unable to learn from untainted scholarship, many a student on the Harvard Russian Research Center team to Europe learned from this living expression. In the formulation of psychological strategy against the deadliest enemy yet uncountered we can scarcely afford such luxury of time and misdirected effort. And yet Oliver Stone continues to parrot the Vladimir Putin line. Independence for the Ukrainian people doesn't seem to interest him much at all. James DiEugenio had this to say: I do not condone the invasion of Ukraine. I think it was a mistake. I am just trying to understand it based on the Russian point of view and what I think has been a misreading and mishandling of the issue on America's part. I could have tolerated troops being sent into the Donbass and the declarations of independence there.. I think that after that would have happened then Putin could have been in a strong position to make a deal. Trying to understand it based on the Russian point of view??? The most you can say is that you "do not condone the invasion of Ukraine." Here is how everybody can help the people of Ukraine. • Oliver Stone is Vladimir Putin's Mouthpiece

Oliver Stone, producer of the so-called documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, recently sat down with Abby Martin. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (39:33) Abby Martin: Well, especially because Operation Northwoods was revealed by the JFK Records Act and it revealed a false flag operation that was being proposed, which is mocked relentlessly, the idea of conspiracies in the U.S. media. Meanwhile they accused Putin of bombing his own apartment buildings, they accused them of concocting a false flag to invade Ukraine right now they are calling for preemptive strikes on Ukraine right now. What lessons can we glean from JFK today with what we're seeing come full circle, Oliver, we're in the middle of cold war 2.0. Oliver Stone: Exactly, exactly except they're not communists, they're capitalists. It's no longer the Soviet Union it's Russia so it's continue, maybe it's about money in the end that they have to keep this thing going and they need an enemy and they have to build up this enemy with China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, ... Cuba. It doesn't end, I mean Syria … there's all kinds of false flags have been planted for years now and it's just it's getting stupider and stupider and it gets really, as you say it's very scary right now, Ukraine. I've been following that situation since 2014 and it's scary beyond belief because it's so irrational what we're doing, for example we've been saying that Russia is going to invade Ukraine for about three months now; building it up in the media like it's like a build-up, a campaign for an advertising, ignoring completely the Ukrainian on the ground situation which is that the Ukrainian armies on the border of a autonomous what would like to be an autonomous republic inside Ukraine, These people are Russian people, they're born - they speak the Russian language, their loyalty is to Russia and it's been that way for forever, since World War II. They were robbed of their democracy when the, when the American protests at Maidan Square happened. They, you know what happened, the Americans came in, supported the bill, put five billion dollars into Ukraine, and created this demonstration, this monstrosity with a lot of false information - that the President of Ukraine was a was a thief and a bum and he had he agreed to go to early elections and it was ignored in in the media, and now here we are in a situation where we replaced him in a coup d'etat and we put a guy in who had no, he was not, no standing among the in the eastern part of Ukraine - they didn't want him. So it's not, it wasn't a democracy anymore it turned out they'd been elected the original guy had been elected, now they have a counterfeit leader, they don't believe in them, but no one tells you that they were killed. A lot of people were murdered when that coup happened, that they were burned to death in Odessa, yeah, they burned the the uh and who burned them a lot of them were neo-Nazis we find that out they we find out that a large portion of the military situation in of the military of the Ukrainian army is fascist. Abby Martin: It's insane when you look at the imperial arrogance of the United States to look at a country bordering with Russia and say we need to do something about that. Oliver Stone: Because we control the narrative. Abby Martin: It's unbelievable. This is completely incoherent. Where to even start with this statement? Oliver Stone just repeats the Putin line. He says "we've been saying that Russia is going to invade Ukraine for three months now; building it up in the media like, it's like a build-up, a campaign for an advertising ..." Now that Russia has invaded Ukraine, Oliver Stone is pretty quiet. His one Facebook post since the invasion, has received hundreds of critical comments Here is the man who lectures the American people on the political implications of the JFK assassination. And now he's a babbling mouthpiece for a ruthless dictator. I wish conspiracy theorists would wake up - the man you are following, Oliver Stone, is a friend to dictators around the globe. You might want to think about whether you want to amplify the voices of irrationality and the voice of a ruthless dictator. Here is a Ukrainian view on Oliver Stone's film Ukraine on Fire from 2016. As we’ve seen, Stone completely ignores all the internal life of Ukraine up to the present day. The ethnic subjugation of Ukrainians into tsarist Russia and inter-war Poland, the birth of Ukrainian nationalism in Austria-Hungary, the short and tragic history of the first Ukrainian republic, its hopeless battle on two fronts against Soviet Russia and Poland, and its death in that battle, the horrors of the Bolshevik government in Ukraine and the famine that was deliberately organised by it in 1933, from which over 3 million Ukrainians died and which many people consider a genocide – it’s as if none of that exists. So in Stone’s vision Ukrainian nationalism “suddenly” arises in 1941 in the form of the “collaborationism” of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists with the Nazis who were invading Ukraine. Here Stone doesn’t forget to note the hackneyed for Russia difference between the “bad” nationalistic, pro-Nazi and now pro-American western Ukraine, and the “good” pro-Russian eastern Ukraine. Since in Stone’s world (and Kremlin propaganda) there was neither ethnic subjugation of Ukrainians in Poland nor famine and mass repressions in the USSR in the period between the wars, Ukrainian nationalists appear out of nowhere in the form of a gang of malevolent villains who, inspired (supposedly) by Nazi ideas, carry out mass retribution against all non-Ukrainians. An excellent Jamie Kirchick piece on Stone and Ukraine from 2017. For Stone, however, Russia’s Anschluss, the first territorial annexation on European soil since World War II, and American “interference” in Ukraine, is a distinction without difference. In a follow-up post the next day, our iconoclastic cineaste wrote that "Many Ukrainians wanted [Yanukovych] out, but there is evidence of pro-Western, 3rd party interference, i.e. Victoria Nuland, John McCain, USAID, National Endowment for Democracy.” Stone doesn’t need to elaborate, never mind provide actual evidence, for the reckless accusations he levels. Simply mentioning these names and institutions is a dog whistle to the breed of conspiracy theorists, on both the left and right, who have emerged unified on the question of American perfidy in Ukraine. To this crowd, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland’s handing out sandwiches to people on the Maidan and the National Endowment for Democracy’s funding election monitors are proof positive that Langley orchestrated a coup d’état. Here is how everybody can help the people of Ukraine. Previous Blog Posts on Oliver Stone's Politics Oliver Stone Says that Putin was Provoked... • Oliver Stone Claims the Zapruder Film was Altered

Oliver Stone, producer of the so-called documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, sat down for an interview with Abby Martin: Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (32:13) Abby Martin: The Zapruder film had to play a role in ... Oliver Stone: What? Abby Martin: The Zapruder film really contradicted what they said ... Oliver Stone: Yeah, and that too had been concealed from the public for a long time until 1975 when it was on the Geraldo Rivera show. Garrison got it out for the trial which was amazing by the way. That was against all plans. They really, uh, and who knows what they cut out of the film? I don't know, but basically, there was enough in the film for us to claim in our movie that his head went back ... to the left; you don't have to be a genius to figure that out, the shot came from the front, the kill shot. This is not the first time that Oliver Stone has claimed that the Zapruder film has been altered. For instance, here: Here is the video: (starting at about 4:50) Stone say at the 5:08 mark that “It was altered a bit I think – there’s a lot of evidence to that effect,” Alex Jones went with the story: The supposed alteration of the Zapruder film didn't make it into JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass. I wonder why. The Zavada report on the Zapruder film proved that it was not altered. Josiah Thompson also wrote on why the Zapruder film is authentic. • Oliver Stone Admits "JFK Revisited" is a Flop

Oliver Stone, producer of the so-called documentary, JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, recently sat down for an interview with Abby Martin. Just who is Abby Martin? James Kirchick wrote a revealing profile in Tablet in 2014: Those praising Martin would do well to acquaint themselves with the entirety of her work. Before being hired by RT, Martin was a prominent voice in the 9/11 conspiracy movement, which seems to be a job qualification for RT given the amount of airtime it gives to fringe views. In a 2008 video of a 9/11 Truth Movement protest, Martin can be seen stating that the attacks were an “inside job.” She knows this, she said, because, “I’ve researched it for three years and every single thing that I uncover solidifies my belief that it was an inside job and that our government was complicit in what happened.” On her program, she regularly gives air to outrageous conspiracy theories, including the notion that water fluoridation is a pernicious government plot to poison unsuspecting American citizens, an old bugbear of the extreme right-wing John Birch Society. She has also accused Israel of using “Hitler’s methods … to maintain a Jewish majority.” There is more here. In the interview with Martin, Oliver Stone admitted that JFK Revisited has been ignored. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (44:52) Oliver Stone: I can't believe we haven't gotten one review from a major media, publication, of this film. One review. Editorials, but no reviews. Not one movie critic. Not one television critic. The assassination community has done tremendous amount of work. Nobody reports it. These are facts. Not made-up bullshit. You can see from Rotten Tomatoes that few people are reviewing JFK Revisited and very few viewers are commenting as well. Overall, JFK Revisited has a tomato rating! Only 14 top critics reviewed the film and half of them gave the film a tomato. A total of 23 viewers have left comments. I love this one: Compare that to JFK: Who has paid attention to Oliver Stone's flop? Well RT (formerly Russia Today). They loved it. • Oliver Stone Says that Putin was Provoked...

Oliver Stone, producer of the so-called documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, spoke to Robert Scheer, former editor of Ramparts, earlier this month about the crisis in Europe. So I’m going to take it from there, and just tell you what I think is going on right now. No one really knows what’s going on in the actual sense of being in Russia’s mind, but I do think, from the beginning, this has been a defensive maneuver from the Russian side. The United States and its allies in NATO have been provoking Russia for, since two years now—actually three years over the Ukraine; more. I mean, they started this in 2014. But they have been using Ukraine as bait, as a temperature-taker of that region. And now we’ve reached this place where they have threatened the Russians so much that they had to react, because I don’t think Putin could have stayed in office if he had not reacted. So this is a game that’s somewhat like the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962; Russia is concerned, very tense; and the United States and its allies don’t seem to be listening to its concerns, don’t seem to care about its concerns about NATO, and specifically Ukraine. But it’s not just Ukraine. It’s also the Baltic; it’s the constant war exercises in the Baltic region, it’s the pressure from Europe, it’s the United States—in the air, we send our bombers close to the border [unclear]. So we’re constantly provoking them, going into their territory. If we can think of it as Canada and the United States—if Canada were doing that, and sending warnings to us like this, we would be freaking out. I would think Canada is somewhat like—Ukraine is to the Russians like Canada is to the United States. In other words—yeah, go ahead. Of course, Oliver Stone didn't think that Putin would invade Ukraine: And this is—it’s not working, and what Putin is saying in general is: lay off; back away. You cannot run war exercises all the time on our borders; you cannot talk this language of calling us the aggressor. And that’s what’s very interesting to me, is the United States media always say—every day I see it in the newspaper or this or that—the Russian invasion, the coming Russian invasion of Ukraine. Now, this is outrageous, because first of all, they have no proof that Russia intends to invade Ukraine; I doubt that they would. I think Russia is concerned only with the Donbass region. The Donbass region being the eastern sector where the Russian-speaking people are threatened by the Ukrainian government. Why? Because, we saw back in 2014, they were killing them. There was quite a bit of murder going on, and the Ukrainian government did not want to recognize the historic autonomy of the eastern Ukraine, of the people who speak Russian. In fact, Russian language was banned in Ukraine, if you remember correctly. James DiEugenio agrees: Some Previous Statements by Vladimir Putin November 2001: What we differ in is that we differ in the ways and means we perceive that are suitable for reaching the same objective. And given the nature of the relationship between the United States and Russia, one can rest assured that whatever final solution is found, it will not threaten or put to threat the interests of both our countries and of the world. November 2001: So what I am trying to say is that while Russia acknowledges the role of NATO in the world of today, Russia is prepared to expand its cooperation with this organization. And if we change the quality of the relationship, if we change the format of the relationship between Russia and NATO, then I think NATO enlargement will cease to be an issue -- will no longer be a relevant issue. I guess that would be my comment. May 2002: I am absolutely convinced that Ukraine will not shy away from the processes of expanding interaction with NATO and the Western allies as a whole. Ukraine has its own relations with NATO; there is the Ukraine-NATO Council. At the end of the day the decision is to be taken by NATO and Ukraine. It is a matter for those two partners. Putin on whether the Baltic states could join NATO: We of course are not in a position to tell people what to do. We cannot forbid people to make certain choices if they want to increase the security of their nations in a particular way. What does Putin fear most? • Mark Lane's Scholarship!

I found this document in the Harold Weisberg Archive this weekend: Howard Roffman was a researcher who, at the age of 22, wrote the book, Presumed Guilty, which argued that Lee Harvey Oswald was innocent. Here is a profile of Roffman from People Magazine from November 1975. Here is a link to the CIA document: And here is the excerpt from Mark Lane and Dick Gregory's Book, Code Name "Zorro" : The Murder of Martin Luther King, Jr: My favorite part of this memo is where they quote Yale Law Professor Alexander Bickel, who concluded that: "Great trial lawyers, like great detectives, have an instinct for the jugular; Mr. Lane has an instinct for the capillaries." Substantively, the CIA memo is pretty good. I know many people will go ballistic over this post - note that the first page of the memo specifies that "we do not recommend that discussion of the assassination question be initiated where it is not already taking place." Any organization falsely accused of heinous crimes would want its employees to be able to counter conspiracy nonsense.
