  • Oliver Stone Said Vladimir Putin is "very bright" and "wise"

This interview was recorded in December 2021, and has just now been made available on YouTube. Money quote is at 30:38: Katie Halper: How has your marginalization compared, post JFK vs. post Russiagate? Oliver Stone: That didn’t help me. Boy, I really, I can’t stand what they did about Russiagate, and I think you guys understand why. It was just lies. To believe that Russia would do this thing, I mean, it’s so -- I spent a lot of time in Russia, I talked to them. I admire them. I know that they -- they are in a very defensive position. And that’s what we never understand. We creep up on their borders, we put Javelin missiles into Ukraine, we do everything to provoke a response. And when they don’t respond, I say, “well, Thank God, because they’re frankly the most patient fucking leaders. And the leader is very bright, he's wise, because don’t, don’t make -- avoid these conflicts, if you can. Now. I keep worrying, of course, if we keep poking the bear, you know … that’s scary. And Ukraine scares me the most because of its .. Ukraine is so rabid, the leaders in Ukraine are so nuts. And they need to get re-elected, so they’ll do just about anything. Lie, steal, cheat. And say that Russia is going to invade Ukraine. What a joke! Russia could -- if it invaded Ukraine, it could take what it wanted in a day or two. I mean it’s not an issue for them. The western --the eastern Ukraine is what matters to them. Because they’re a Russian-speaking people, Russian-type people who are going to be killed, and that’s what was the issue was when they went in, when the Ukrainian army went into the Donbas, they were killing people, left and right, and there’s plenty of footage on that, and plenty of testimony. Whereas in Crimea, when they went in, they didn’t go in because the citizenry was so against them. That even the Ukrainian troops in Crimea never fought. They just folded into their barracks. It’s in our movie, we did a film called Ukraine in Flames, and which you can see. But it’s really sad that we’ve misinterpreted everything and that’s our media. Everything has been a lie about Ukraine. So it’s dangerous situation. Same with China. You know that Taiwan is pretty scary. So, I like Biden. I think he’s a -- I thought he was a good old man, he not going to be -- he’s not gonna get on fire, he’s been around, at least you know it’ll be tamped down, the flames from Trump. I was hoping for that, and I still hope for it, but it scares me when I hear about American aggression in these countries. Ukraine is so rabid? Stone not only says that Putin is "wise," but that: Ukraine is so rabid, the leaders in Ukraine are so nuts. And they need to get re-elected, so they’ll do just about anything. Lie, steal, cheat. And say that Russia is going to invade Ukraine. What a joke! Russia could -- if it invaded Ukraine, it could take what it wanted in a day or two. I mean It’s not an issue for them. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on JFK's Autopsy Photographs (Revisited)

Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed misleads viewers on JFK autopsy photographs -- making it appear that a White House photographer took additional pictures that are not in the record. Robert Knudsen shown in screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (17:07 in episode three) Whoopi Goldberg: Doesn't this all lead to the question, if Stringer did not take these photographs, then who did? [Robert Knudsen and Saundra Spencer] Whoopi Goldberg: Robert Knudsen was one of the most fascinating stories that the Review Board encountered. Knudsen was a Navy photographer who was detailed to the White House in 1958. If you read his obituaries in the New York Times and the Washington Post, you will see that he is credited with photographing Kennedy's autopsy, except officially, he was not. Douglas Horne: Robert Knudsen was not interviewed by the Warren Commission. So they finally found Robert Knudsen in 1978. And to its credit, the House Select Committee did a deposition. To their discredit, they never published it, they buried it for fifty years. And it got released in 1993 and I know why they buried it. Because everything he told them about autopsy photography contradicted what they thought they knew in the official record. Oliver Stone: What did Knudsen tell them? Douglas Horne: So he says, "Burkley had me develop these black and white negatives on Saturday, November 23rd, and that's when I saw photographs of probes in the body". Well, they didn't like that. They really didn't know whether to believe him or not, because there are no pictures of probes in the body, in the official collection. But he was sure that he developed those negatives and saw them. Dr. David Mantik: He has never said he took photographs of the brain, but he implies that he was very busy taking photographs of the body. His wife was interviewed later by the Assassination Records Review Board. He told her that the photographs had been burned, deliberately, by the Secret Service, and that one photograph in particular, presumably the back of the head, had been severely altered. Gloria Knudsen was so disturbed by this after his death in 1989 that she actually contacted some of his colleagues there in the Navy, and they assured her that this was what he had told them, too. In fact, he had told them that he had seen photographs of the back of JFK's head that showed a large wound, low in the back of the head. Douglas Horne: Stringer is still the autopsy photographer of record. I think they both took pictures. And I personally think that many of John Stringer's pictures never made it in to the official collection, and a lot of the ones we are looking at are Robert Knudsen's pictures. A large part of this was in the two-hour JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, and I covered the problems of that segment here. Knudsen never claimed he was at the autopsy, and he told the HSCA that the autopsy photographs that he was shown were "roughly what I recall seeing." The supposed photograph that he saw with metal probes was a negative, and he said that he "just glanced at it." There is no evidence to support the claim that Knudsen was at the autopsy. This post only covers what has been added to the segment. Dr. David Mantik says that Mrs. Knudsen said that her husband claimed the autopsy photographs had been deliberately burnt by the Secret Service. Here is a link to the ARRB interviews with her and her family and there is no mention of this at all I have also prepared and gone through the transcripts of their interviews with the ARRB and I see no mention of any photographs being burned. Mantik also mentions the colleagues that Mrs. Knudsen reached out to. Here is what she told Doug Horne: According to Mrs. Knudsen, none of these people asked her husband if he had been at the autopsy, and he never told them that he had been there. Somehow they inferred from "certain remarks" and from "the quality of the photographs" that "he may well have been at the autopsy." It sounds like perhaps Knudsen might have had a few autopsy photographs and he showed them to one person. That fact that Mrs. Knudsen would not divulge names to the ARRB to corroborate her account is telling. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on Israel and Nuclear Weapons

Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed of Moshe Dayan. Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, makes it appear that Israel was about to use nuclear weapons in the 1973 Yom Kippur war. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (41:19 in episode 4) Donald Sutherland: In 1973, while Egyptian tanks were crossing the Sinai during the Yom Kippur War, Commander Moshe Dayan proposed the use of nuclear weapons. This is only part of the story and JFK: Destiny Betrayed leaves out the most important details. Israel was facing an extremely dire situation in the Golan Heights with Syrian tanks advancing. Israel was caught off guard and it did not appear that they could stop the Syrians. The situation was perilous. Only in the early morning of Oct. 6 did the Israeli leadership finally understand that it was facing a full-scale attack by Egypt and Syria that very evening. (And even then they had the estimated time of the attack wrong; the war actually started at 2 p.m.) By the next morning, the Egyptian Army had crossed the Suez Canal and columns of Syrian tanks had penetrated deep into the Golan Heights. Hundreds of Israeli soldiers had died in a heroic but hopeless effort to save small, isolated strongholds along Israel's borders. It's not surprising that Dayan brought up the nuclear option, but Golda Meir, the Prime Minister of Israel, told him to "forget it." For some reason that was left out of JFK: Destiny Betrayed. In Arnon Azaryahu’s account {he was a senior aide to Minister Yisrael Galili], the war-time security cabinet, consisting of Galili, prime minister Meir, defense minister Dayan and deputy prime minister Yigal Allon, held an especially lengthy meeting on October 7, 1973. Dayan did not advise using nuclear weapons - he advised to start the preparations in case they are needed: In the interview, Azaryahu goes on to say: “So Moshe Dayan is suggesting saving a few hours of preparation, in other words, that the time factor could be really critical. JFK: Destiny Betrayed is irresponsible in not mentioning the dire situation facing the Israelis, and in not mentioning the answer Golda Meir gave to Moshe Dayan. You can watch the entire interview here. Here is a short excerpt from a transcript: (27:07) Rogan: How aware was Kennedy that he was in danger? Was he at all aware? Stone: Oh yeah. Oh yea. In fact, he had that Irish sense of tragedy. He went to Ireland before he died and he kind of knew it. You know. Rogan: Do you think he knew that they were going to try and assassinate him? Stone: Oh, he knew about that because there were several attempts already. Rogan: Were there other attempts? Stone: Oh yeah. Rogan: I didn't know about ... Stone: In the documentary, we go ... Rogan: That's right. Stone: To Chicago ... Rogan: That's right ... Stone: And Tampa ... Rogan: Can you just give us a brief outline of those? Stone: Ok. There's a lot of information there. In Chicago, early November of 63, a landlady complained about four Cubans with arms in an apartment that she owned, that they rented briefly, and two of them were busted. Two of them disappeared. And the two of them who were busted were interrogated and let go. Which is strange. Rogan: Yeah. Stone: There was also a patsy that was similar to Oswald, same profile as Oswald, he'd been a marine, he had been in Japan, at an airbase. he had expressed his dissatisfaction. another air base, not the same one, not Atsugi... he expressed his dissatisfaction with the United States. He defected to Russia. If you want to know about the supposed Chicago plot, then please read my blog post. There is no evidence that there was a plot in Chicago. Oliver Stone's story about the Cubans comes from Edwin Black's article from November 1975. And he only had one source -- ex-Secret Service agent Abraham Bolden. There is no documentary evidence to support Bolden's allegations. Thomas Vallee was indeed arrested but he did not actually threaten JFK's life. And Oliver Stone is just plain wrong about Vallee being a defector to the Soviet Union. He wasn't. In fact, Vallee was not linked to the supposed Chicago plot. Here is what the House Select Committee on Assassinations wrote: The committee was unable to document the existence of the alleged assassination team. Specifically, no agent who had been assigned to Chicago confirmed any aspect of Bolden's version. One agent did state there had been a threat in Chicago during that period, but he was unable to recall the details. Bolden did not link Vallee to the supposed four-man assassination team, although he claimed to remember Vallee's name in connection with a 1963 Chicago case. He did not recognize Vallee's photograph when shown it by the committee. So, here is my challenge to conspiracy theorists: Please post some evidence to support the allegation regarding the four-man Cuban assassination team - the two men who were arrested and interrogated, and the two men who got away. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on Jack Ruby

Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, misleads viewers on the motivations of Jack Ruby. In Episode 2, there is a brief video clip at 55:06: Jack Ruby: The people who had to have so much to gain, and had such an ulterior motive, to put me in [the] position I'm in, will never let the true facts come above board to the world. That is part of the following video: Here is the full transcript: Jack Ruby: The only thing I can say -- what is your name, and I’ll know how to... Interviewer: Harry Kennedy. Jack Ruby: Harry Kennedy. Everything pertaining to what's happening has never come to the surface. The world will never know the true facts, of what occurred, my motives. Uh, in other words, I'm the only person in the background that knows the truth pertaining to everything relating to my testimony. Interviewer: Do you think it will ever come out? Jack Ruby: No, because, unfortunately, the people had to have so much to gain and had such an ulterior motive for putting me in [the] position I'm in, will never let the true facts come above board to the world. Interviewer: Are these people in very high positions, Jack? Jack Ruby: Yes. This video is an interview with Ft. Worth TV station KTVT and was shot during a break in court proceedings, related to his appeal, on September 9, 1965. It is clear that there are some edits in the video. What is more important is that Ruby is talking about his testimony before the Warren Commission. The so-called truth that he is talking about is not some conspiracy but the veracity of his Warren Commission testimony. Indeed, here is another video of Jack Ruby, probably just before the above video: Ruby is talking about the lie detector test that he took for the Warren Commission. He seems upset that the Warren Commission didn't provide a judgment as to whether he passed or failed the test This was a very important point for Ruby because he wanted to prove to the world that he alone killed Oswald, The only way to truly understand why this was so important to Jack Ruby is to understand the importance of his Jewish identity. He was born Jacob Rubenstein in 1911 to parents born in Poland. He spoke Yiddish in their kosher home and he received some Hebrew school training. His parents fought violently and Rubenstein was placed in a foster home in 1923 and was there for 18 months. He served in the Air Force in 1943 and was discharged in 1946. When a Sergeant called him a "Jew bastard," Rubenstein attacked him. Rubenstein moved to Dallas in 1947 where his sister Eva Grant lived. He became the manager of her nightclub. That same year Jack and his brothers, Earl and Sam, changed their names to Ruby. Earl said "it was preferable not to use a Jewish name" for his business. Jack Ruby's Jewish identify motivated a large part of his thinking and his actions. He had a life-long record of volatile responses to antisemites. On one occasion in 1946, Ruby returned from downtown Chicago with his suit covered in blood. He explained that he had fought with a person who had called him a "a dirty Jew or something like that." He also participated in street fights against the German-American Bund before World War II and he said that he "cracked a few heads." Ruby told Rabbi Hillel Silverman at his synagogue, Shearith Israel, in Dallas that "he frequently engaged in physical combat with persons making derogatory remarks concerning his Jewish background." Ruby forbade comedians at his club to tell stories directed at Jews or about Jewish practices. On the morning of November 22, 1963 this advertisement appeared in the Dallas Morning News: The ad was signed by Bernard Weissman which is a Jewish name. Jack Ruby noticed this and he also noticed that there was a post office box associated with the ad. These billboards were also around Dallas: According to the Warren Report, that evening, Jack Ruby was at his sister's apartment: “Mrs. Grant testified that her brother was still disturbed about the Weissman advertisement when he arrived, showed her the photograph of the Warren sign…Still curious as to whether or not Weissman was Jewish, Mrs. Grant asked her brother whether he had been able to find the name Bernard Weissman in the Dallas city directory, and Ruby said he had not. Their doubts about Weissman’s existence having been confirmed, both began to speculate that the Weissman ad and the Warren sign were the work of either ‘Commies or the Birchers,’ and were designed to discredit the Jews.” Here is an excerpt from Senator Exhibit 5402 and you can see that Jack Ruby was highly agitated; At 4 PM on November 23rd Jack Ruby called his friend Stanley Kaufman. He said that "Jack was particularly impressed with the [black] border [of the Weissman ad] as being a tipoff of some sort - that this man knew the President was going to be assassinated." Jack Ruby then closed his Carousel Club: Ruby even placed an ad in the Dallas Morning News: On Sunday, November 24, 1963 Jack Ruby shot Oswald; It was an impulsive act. And like other people who commit impulsive acts, Ruby came up with a variety of explanations after the fact: He told the police who arrested him, "I hope I killed the SOB and saved a lot of people some trouble." He told Assistant District Attorney Bill Alexander, "Well, you guys couldn't do it. Someone had to do it. That son of a bitch killed my President." (page 399, Cased Closed) Ruby told his Rabbi that he "did it for the Jewish people." He told Toni Zoppi of the Dallas Morning News that "he did it to prove to the world that 'Jews have balls.'" (page 85, Jack Ruby by Gary Willis and Ovid Demaris) He also told a variety of people that he did it so that Mrs. Kennedy wouldn't have to go to a trial. The assassination of JFK and the killing of Oswald left Ruby totally unhinged. The reaction of the far-right John Birch Society got to him. They always referred to Ruby as Rubenstein so as to emphasize a Jewish component of a supposed conspiracy to kill JFK. And that made Ruby worry that the Jews might be blamed (however unfairly) for the murder of Kennedy. Ruby became extremely paranoid. He was examined on April 26, 1964: (The Trial of Jack Ruby, page 344 - 345) “Dr. West had examined Ruby in a private interview room. The prisoner had appeared “Pale, tremulous, agitated and depressed.” Previously meticulous about his appearance, he was now “disheveled and unkempt.” It was the opinion of Dr. West that “at this time Mr. Ruby is obviously psychotic.” On the previous evening, the psychiatrist reported, Ruby had become convinced that “all the Jews in America were being slaughtered.” Ruby was certain that he was the cause of the mayhem. “Somehow, through an awful mistake, and the distortions and misunderstandings derived from his murder trial, the President’s assassination and its aftermath were now being blamed on him,” with the result that he was now also the cause of the massacre of “twenty-five million innocent people.” Ruby, according to West, was positive that his brother Sam had been “tortured, mutilated, castrated and burned in the street outside the jail.” He had heard his brother’s screams and could still hear them at the time of the psychiatrist’s visit. When Dr. West attempted to convince him that no such events had taken place, Ruby had become furious.” Jack Ruby testified before the Warren Commission on June 7, 1964. He made an impassioned plea to be taken to Washington: Jack Ruby: There is only one thing. If you don't take me back to Washington tonight to give me a chance to prove to the President that I am not guilty, then you will see the most tragic thing that will ever happen. Conspiracy theorists convinced themselves that Ruby wanted to spill the beans about either the conspiracy to kill JFK or his orders to kill Oswald. They ignore parts of his testimony before the Warren Commission where he spelled out exactly why he wanted to to Washington: Mr. Ruby: Unfortunately, you don’t have, because it is too late. And I wish that our beloved President, Lyndon Johnson, would have delved deeper into the situation, hear me, not to accept just circumstantial facts about my guilt or innocence, and would have questioned to find out the truth about me before he relinquished certain powers to these certain people. Chief Justice Warren: Well, I am afraid I don’t know what power you believe we relinquished to them. I think that it is difficult to understand what you have to say. Mr. Ruby: I want to say this to you. The Jewish people are being exterminated at this moment. Consequently a whole new form of government is going to take over our country, and I know I won’t live to see you another time. He then said: Mr. Ruby: All I know is maybe something can be saved. Because right now, I want to tell you this, I am used as a scapegoat, and there is no greater weapon that you can use to create some falsehood about some of the Jewish faith, especially as the terrible heinous crime such as the killing of President Kennedy. Now maybe something can be saved. It may not be too late, whatever happens, if our President, Lyndon Johnson, knew the truth from me. The reason he wanted to go to Washington was to tell Lyndon Johnson that the Jews were being blamed for the assassination and that there might be a second holocaust. In 1965, Jack Ruby was examined by psychiatrist Werner Tuteur. He told Tuteur about the conspiracy to kill JFK - but when asked for proof all he did was retrieve the book Who Killed Kennedy? by Thomas Buchanan: Tuteur saw Ruby's paranoia up close: And Ruby being 'framed' to kill Oswald: You can download Dr. Werner Tuteur's complete psychiatric evaluation here: JFK: Destiny Betrayed uses a short clip of Jack Ruby to try and persuade viewers that he had knowledge of a huge conspiracy. They can only do this by ignoring his experiences with antisemitism and how that affected his mental health. Ruby believed that a second Holocaust was coming because some people thought that, as a Jew, he was part of a conspiracy. That was why he wanted the Warren Commission to clearly state that he was telling the truth during his polygraph examination. Viewers of JFK: Destiny Betrayed deserve better. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on Oswald's Income

Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, makes the erroneous claim that Lee Harvey Oswald was not paid for his last quarter of service in the U.S. Marines. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (7:21 in episode 4) John Newman: And so [former CIA Chief of Soviet bloc counterintelligence Tennent "Pete"] Bagley raised his voice and insisted, “He had to be witting! He had to be witting!” That was a telling, seminal moment In the history of KGB-CIA spy wars, in the history of Lee Harvey Oswald. His early use by the CIA was just a very, very important one, because finally, after all these years, a very senior CIA officer had just told Malcolm [Blunt] and us that Lee Harvey Oswald was a witting false defector when he went to Moscow. Whoopi Goldberg: There was another unusual event that took place at the time of Oswald’s defection. The source of his income changed. Douglas Horne: Oswald’s last quarter of earnings in the United States, before he defected to the Soviet Union, should have been paid by the United States Marine Corps. And they weren’t. Because we asked to see his Marine Corps earnings records that the Marine Corps deposits with the Social Security Administration. They did not pay him any money the last quarter he was in the United States before his defection. Had no income from the Marine Corps, when he should have had. Whoopi Goldberg: Could this all be coincidence? Or was Otto Otepka correct in suspecting Oswald was not a legitimate defector? And is this why Angleton told his secretary to withhold information from Otepka? This claim is just plain false. This page from the USMC pay records published by the Warren Commission in Volume 26 shows that he was paid seven times in the third quarter of 1959: (line 49, box 30) You can see the withholding of $91.30 for January - September 1959: The 1040 for 1959 (no doubt based on the W-2) shows exactly the same amount of withholding: The 1959 form was indeed filed by Marguerite Oswald: And even Douglas Horne admits the form was signed by Marguerite: This all appears to be totally consistent with the normal handling of Oswald's third-quarter pay. Douglas Horne wants JFK: Destiny Betrayed viewers to believe that he discovered a problem as part of his work with the ARRB. Somehow this discrepancy is supposed to corroborate the allegation that Oswald was on some sort of mission for American intelligence. Actually, the anomaly in the Social Security Administration pay records was first documented in a Warren Commission document. CD 353a is an "Extract of Information" on Oswald from the SSA file: It does say “no earnings reported” for the third quarter of 1959. Horne knew about this when he worked at the ARRB: Horne wrote that it “cries out for explanation.” One possible explanation - an error in the CD - does not appear to have been explored. Yet another example of the film’s “poverty of imagination.” James DiEugenio has made a big deal out of this huge disclosure: It is true that when he saw the raw SSA data (after learning that CD 353a was public) he was “severely cautioned” that disclosure of information not found elsewhere “would be a felony.” But the only information he reveals in the film was also in CD 353a - as he knew in 1997. I don't think that Douglas Horne or the producers and writers of JFK: Destiny Betrayed will be arrested. After all, getting things wrong is not a felony. Thank You: Thanks to Paul Hoch who provided the research for this blog post. He remembered that in 1988 he had written about the Warren Commission's access to Oswald's pay records in a completely different context. • Oliver Stone's 'Bromance' with Vladimir Putin

Caption from The Telegraph: Sycophantic: Oliver Stone's 20-hour interview with Putin was criticised for its chumminess Credit: YouTube Oliver Stone's bromance with Vladimir Putin was the subject of an article in The Telegraph this week. “I just played ice hockey… and [yet] you’re the one who is tired!” jokes Russian President Vladimir Putin to a sleepy Oliver Stone. “Your muscles must hurt,” the soft-spoken filmmaker replies, flashing a toothy smile. It is episode three of the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s fawning four-part documentary series, The Putin Interviews, and I feel like I’m caught in the middle of a blossoming bromance. Released on June 12, 2017, while the United States was still digesting the idea of a Trump presidency, The Putin Interviews were marketed by major network Showtime as an “unprecedented event”. With its All The Presidents Men-style typeface and snappy trailer that hinted at Frost vs. Nixon-style revelations, there was hope an Oscar-winning Stone might just make Putin sweat a little, especially around corrosive issues like rebuilding the Soviet Union (and what this might mean for Russia’s neighbours) or hacking a US election. With 20 hours of footage that stretched from 2015 to 2017, there had to be something meaty in there, surely? This wasn’t the first time Stone had interviewed a divisive political figure. However, just like previous Oliver Stone interviews with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, the narrative of The Putin Interviews is more preoccupied with making a warm, fuzzy human being out of a dictator than pressing them on their indiscretions. There is one particular scene that feels like a teenage fanboy getting the chance to meet their favourite pop star. “Do you ever have a bad day?” Stone wonders, open-eyed and dizzy with optimism. “I’m not a woman, so I don’t have a bad day. That’s just the nature of things,” answers Putin while walking through the golden corridors of the Kremlin. Of course, this casual male chauvinism is passed off by Putin with a shrug of the shoulder. The Telegraph discussed Stone's disastrous performance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert: In an interview with Stephen Colbert to promote this Showtime series, Stone argued his extremely laid-back approach to dealing with Putin was based on the idea that “you don’t make butter with vinegar”. As the studio audience laughs hysterically at Colbert’s joke that Stone’s puppy was probably being held hostage by the Russians off camera, the JFK director looks like he wants the ground to swallow him up. Here is Stone's interview by Colbert: Actor T.J. Miller was on the show and he couldn’t help tweeting exactly what happened: T.J. Miller ✔@nottjmiller . 19m Oh my fucking god. Oliver Stone just jaw droppingly praised Vladimir Putin and talk down to @stephenAtHome asking if he knew what WikiLeaks T.J. Miller ✔@nottjmiller . 19m …was. My god. He implied Putin never killed anyone and our own intelligence agencies planted malware…good. God. He’s fucking crazy. T.J. Miller ✔@nottjmiller . 18m The audience was boo’ing and laughing at him. The entire @ColbertShow audience was aghast. Fucking nightmare. He said Israel meddled— T.J. Miller ✔@nottjmiller . 17m In our election more than Russia. He’s a lunatic. He made every wrong move you can make. He didn’t know his audience, he snapped at them. T.J. Miller ✔@nottjmiller . 10m Colbert became visibly aggressive & he very well should have. Oliver stone was hardly cogent in his points—was dodging & weaving like Hilary. T.J. Miller ✔@nottjmiller -. 9m Wow. I can’t believe all that just happened. You HAVE to tune into @ColbertShow show tonight. IT WAS VERY MUCH INSANE. I mean this is bad. T.J. Miller ✔@nottjmiller . 5m Oliver Stone just layed the biggest egg ever on @Colbertshow It’s official. He laid an egg. In the truest definition of the expression. The interview with Oliver Stone was edited down. As T. J. Miller noted, Stone said some ridiculous stuff about Israel: A Page Six source who was in the audience for the taping of the network’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Monday told us that the political spat was “painful to watch.” The audience member explained that as Colbert pressed Oscar winner Stone — who was promoting his new Vladimir Putin Showtime series, “The Putin Interviews” — on his apparent sympathy for the Russian president in spite of claims about Russian interference in the US election, Stone, at a disadvantage, tried to shift the talk to Israel. The source said they “watched from behind [their] hands” as Stone said words to the effect of: “Israel had far more involvement in the US election than Russia.” The “Platoon” director further challenged Colbert by saying, “Why don’t you ask me about that?” — but we’re told that the host shot back, “I’ll ask you about that when you make a documentary about Israel!” (The source described Stone’s Israeli argument as “a classic anti-Semitic canard.”) The Telegraph mentions the scene where Stone and Putin watch Dr. Strangelove together, but that is not even the strangest part of the interviews: Perhaps the most bizarre moment – well, aside from Stone forcing an unimpressed Putin (“It’s make-believe!”) to sit through Kubrick’s classic nuclear war satire Dr. Strangelove – is when Stone asks Putin about his grandchildren. “Do you play with them in the garden?” Stone beams, likely conjuring up images of Brando’s Don Corleone stumbling around an orange tree chasing a terrified toddler. “Very seldom,” says the Russian leader, revealing he gets in at 1.30AM and wakes up at 7AM. Suddenly, poignant violin music rises into focus and a stock image of Putin riding a horse appears in the centre of the screen. It feels like pure propaganda designed to celebrate a tireless, sympathetic leader who is “too busy” to play with the kids. Goebbels would have been proud. What's next for Oliver Stone? In the years since The Putin Interviews, Stone has continued his journey as a seemingly non-confrontational political interviewer. In 2021, he released an eight-hour film series about Kazakhstan’s former president Nursultan Nazarbayev. Just like his Putin film, it has been attacked by critics for being toothless and basking too much in the glow of an alpha male subject. Wherever the 75-year-old film veteran’s career goes next (and a Trump interview is surely an inevitability), The Putin Interviews will mark a full circle moment where Stone completed his journey from creating anti-establishment films like Born On The Fourth of July and Wall Street, which smartly stood up to abusers of power, to being someone who appears to indulge those same abusers with endless warmth. “Next time it will be more relaxing!” Stone promises Putin towards the climax of the fourth episode, despite the fact his interviewee has barely broken into a sweat and looks like he’s just finished laying in a hammock. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on Otto Otepka

Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, misleads viewers into believing that Otto Otepka uncovered evidence that Oswald was a fake defector. Otepka's whole career was built on finding communist subversion and his suspicions about Oswald were driven by his anti-communism. There is no evidence to support the allegation that Otepka believed Oswald was a fake defector. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (1:27 in episode four, in a segment called "Fingerprints of Intelligence") Richard Schweiker: This report [Church Committee, Book V on the Performance of the Intelligence Agencies in the JFK Assassination] documents the failures of the U.S. intelligence establishment in their investigation of President Kennedy's assassination, and their coverup to the Warren Commission. Whoopi Goldberg: During the 1975 Church Committee investigation of U.S. intelligence activities, committee member Richard Schwieker, in an interview at the time, remarked about Oswald, that "everywhere you looked with him, there are fingerprints of intelligence." Those fingerprints extended back to 1959 when Oswald defected to the Soviet Union. State Department intelligence officer Otto Otepka had noted the marked increase in the number of Americans defecting to Russia at the time. He also noted that some of them came from the military. He therefore suspected that some of these men were fake defectors. They had been assigned by the CIA to garner intelligence behind the iron curtain. He sent a letter to the CIA, asking which ones were real and which were their agents. Oswald was one of the names on Otepka's list. Otepka's request was forwarded to James Angleton, Chief of Counterintelligence. He instructed that there be no research done on Oswald, but Otepka continued to work on the Oswald case. Lisa Pease: The only thing of significance was that he was really interested in Lee Harvey Oswald before the assassination. And he actually had a study of these defectors in his safe. Well, things got worse. His office was not only bugged but they planted people in his office to spy on him. They started putting confidential documents in his burn bag and then tried to blame him and say "he's burning confidential documents. The guy's gone, y'know, wacko." Whoopi Goldberg: As a result, he was formally removed from the State Department on November 5, 1963. just seventeen days before the assassination. And you will not see Otepka's name in the Warren Report and he was not called as a witness before that body. In fact, James Angleton, the man who had access to all the Oswald files at the CIA, coordinated the agency's response to the Warren Commission's requests. Just who was Otto Otepka? He was the former chief of the State Department's Office of Security (SY), and he had been the "leading expert on Communist subversion in the State Department." Otepka's office worked closely with the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (SISS) which held hearings on the "loss of China" in 1949 and then later on the "loss of Cuba." Part of the job of the Office of Security was to evaluate members of the diplomatic corps for loyalty. For anybody interested in Otto Otepka, I heartily recommend Eric Paul Roorda's 2007 article in Diplomatic History, "McCarthyite in Camelot: The "Loss" of Cuba, Homophobia, and the Otto Otepka Scandal in the Kennedy State Department." You can download it here: After the 1954 election, Otepka started a comprehensive review of State Department employees: (quotes are from Roorda's article) Otepka made up a set of five by eight inch file cards distilling the damaging "data" on each of 858 employees whose files, Otepka decided, contained some dark mark. "The purpose of the study and the cards," he testified, "was to assure that no person whose record was highly questionable would occupy any critical or policy-influencing position, and also to assure that each case, according to its merits, would be subjected to periodic scrutiny and appropriate reinvestigation." The Office of Security was so close to the SISS that some considered that it had been "captured." And the SISS played a crucial role in the dismissal of several China hands. Then the SISS turned its attention to Cuba. Its hearings began before the 1960 election and continued after the inauguration. The controversy stoked the explosive issue of subversion in the State Department, prompting new Secretary of State Dean Rusk to be more assertive than his predecessors had been in defending the Foreign Service. Rusk realized that the Office of Security had allied with the SISS in the witch hunts that had weakened the State Department. Otepka's domination of security clearances became the first target in Rusk's effort to break the influence of the SISS. Dean Rusk realized it was time for change. Otepka's supervisor said he was a man with "a tendency to dwell in the past ... a stickler for detail and a hewer to the letter of the law." But Otepka considered himself to be an expert on "communism and its subversive movements in the United States," subscribing to McLeod's dictate that "if one is a security officer, you assume that the enemy has an apparatus in your organization and you try to root it out." Otepka's activities as an informant for the SISS had troubled even Secretary of State John Foster Dulles in the late 1950s. Rusk knew that Otepka was yesterday's man. Otepka met with Rusk and Robert Kennedy in December 1960 to discuss the rejection of Walt Rostow's security clearance in 1954 and 1957. Otepka told them he would still not clear Rostow and said that "all new Kennedy appointees would be subject to exhaustive background checks by the Office of Security and the FBI." Two other appointments by Rusk were also rejected by Otepka. Rusk then eliminated Otepka's position as Deputy Director of the Office of Security and moved him to the Division of Evaluations. He then had no authority over security clearances. Otepka then testified before the SISS and over the next five years he would offer "approximately 1,750,000 words of testimony." He told them that Rusk's move was politically motivated. A controversy erupted over Kennedy's appointment of William Wieland, who had previously been Director of the Office of Mexican and Caribbean Affairs in the State Department, to help reorganize the Office of Security. Otepka's file on Wieland consisted of eleven volumes and he objected to Rusk's clearance of Wieland. This all hit the newspapers and there were insinuations about Wieland: Indianapolis Star, October 18, 1962 The hearings moved from Wieland to Otepka himself. The SISS concluded that the State Department "was seeking to remove 'the last of the breed' left over from the McCarthy era." Otepka testified that the Kennedy administration was abusing the emergency waiver process for hiring. A State Department spokesperson said that Otepka "was out of step with the times. We are not witch hunting any more. We have no security risks, and he knows it." Otepka met privately with SISS staff to supply them with information: Otepka informed the SISS that he had compiled a list of eight hundred current State Department employees whose security files contained "seriously derogatory information." He said he considered liberals in the State Department to be "dissidents" who subverted the efforts of "fair-minded evaluators" like himself. The State Department suspected that Otepka had given the staff of SISS classified documents and examined his "burn bag" for clues. They found "classified seals of documents that Otepka had turned over to the subcommittee." Otepka's phone was tapped and his office safe was searched. In May 1963 Rusk transferred Otepka to a new position that did not require the use of security files. By the time Otepka testified before the SISS in August 1963, his name had been removed from the State Department directory. Later that month he was charged with releasing documents to the SISS. Rusk told the SISS that "Otepka worked for the wrong boss." Otepka did not lose his job but he was demoted in December 1967. Richard Nixon then appointed him to the Subversive Activities Control Board but he was never confirmed by the Senate. Much of the narrative behind the Otto Otepka segment in JFK: Destiny Betrayed comes from Henry Hurt's book, Reasonable Doubt, in which chapter nine also has the title "Fingerprints of Intelligence." Another source for this segment is Lisa Pease's article "What did Otepka Know about Oswald & the CIA?" in the March-April 1977 issue of Probe Magazine. In addition, John Newman writes about Otepka on pages 170 - 173 of Oswald and the CIA. Here is my attempt to figure out what was going on in connection with Oswald:. This all started with an Otepka memo to Richard Gatewood, who worked in the State Department's Office of Intelligence Resources and Coordination (IRC) within its Intelligence and Research Bureau (INR) about defectors to the Soviet Union: Hugh Cumming of the Department of State's Intelligence and Research Bureau (INR) then wrote Richard Bissell of the CIA: Here was his list of defectors: Bissell then replied to Cumming: Newman claims that Richard Bissell then requested Robert Bannerman, who was Deputy Chief of the CIA's Office of Security (OS), to answer the query. He had a close working relationship with Otepka and he made a check with the State Department's Security Office (SY) to see what they had and "told his staff to support Counterintelligence Staff (CI)." Marguerite Stevens was assigned to send information to CI. The allegation that Angleton "instructed that there be no research done on Oswald" comes from John Newman's book: (page 171 of John Newman's Oswald and the CIA) A Stevens memo at the time shows that Bannerman verbally requested Gaynor to assemble information on American defectors. The request, as Gaynor relayed it to Stevens, however, was worded in a peculiar way, as if to dissuade her from doing research on seven people. Bannerman specified that he wanted information on American defectors "other than Bernon F. Mitchell and William H. Martin, and five other defectors regarding whom Mr. Otepka of the State Department Security Office already has information" on in his files [emphasis added]. One of the "five other defectors" that Stevens was not supposed to look into was Lee Harvey Oswald. Here is the memo that Newman references: Bissell then sent a detailed reply to Cumming: Bissell included details of various defectors. Here is what he sent on Lee Henry [sic] Oswald: Here is another memo from Otepka regarding Oswald: I can see nothing in any documentation about the issue of false defectors. I turned to Henry Hurt's book, Reasonable Doubt, He writes: It is known that during the years in question the State Department was engaged in a study of U.S. defectors to the Soviet Union and other Communist countries. One of its aims, according to Otto Otepka, the official in charge of the study, was to determine which "defectors" were genuine and which were U.S. intelligence operatives on espionage missions. Hurt has three sources. The first is page 324 of William Gill's 1969 book, The Ordeal of Otto Otepka. Here is what Gill has to say: Some time prior to his exile from the Office of Security Otepka started work on a study of Americans who had defected to the Soviet Union and other Communist countries. Gill says nothing about determining which defectors were genuine. In fact, Gill notes that what would have made Otepka suspicious about Oswald was not his intelligence connections: For example, Otepka almost certainly would have delved very deeply into the curious circumstances surrounding expeditious granting of a visa to enter the Soviet Union from Finland in October 1959. Although the State Department told the Warren Commission that in 1959 it "usually took an American tourist in Helsinki one to two weeks to obtain a visa," Oswald got his within two days after he applied. Gill claims that Otepka's interest was in whether there was communist infiltration in the State Department, and he was also interested in whether Marina Oswald had KGB connections. Gill elaborates on what Otepka would have investigated: (page 326) The Otepka study would have traced Lee Harvey Oswald's background to this childhood. It would have determined who influenced him to become a fanatical Marxist. It would have unearthed early evidence of his mental instability. It would, in short, have marked Oswald as a man well worth keeping a wary eye on because all this, and more, was within the scope of the study as Otepka planned it. That passage is not in Henry Hurt's book. One of Hurt's other sources is Anthony Summers' book Conspiracy: (page 118 in paperback edition) Otto Otepka, the controversial former Chief Security Officer of the State Department, said that in 1963 his office engaged in a study of American "defectors," because neither the CIA nor military agencies such as naval intelligence would reveal which were authentic and which were intelligence plants. One of the cases being studied was that of Lee Harvey Oswald. Summer's source is Bernard Fensterwald's 1977 book, Assassination of JFK by Coincidence or Conspiracy?: (page 231) Neither the CIA nor the military intelligence people would tell the State Department which of its "defectors" were genuine and which were U.S. agents. His source for that is an interview with Otto Otepka in the summer of 1971. I have not been able to find that interview and so it is impossible to evaluate exactly what Otepka said. But all the sources about the Otepka's study looking into false defectors derive from that interview. There is no documentation to support the allegation. Jim Hougan, author of the 1978 book Spooks: The Haunting of America, claims that Otepka's interest was whether defectors were authentic: (page 371) According to Otepka, the study on defectors was initiated by him because neither the CIA nor military intelligence agencies would inform the State Department which defections to the Soviet Union were double agents working for the United States. I see no other documentary evidence to support the claim that, at the time, Otepka was looking into false defectors. Hougan interviewed Otepka in 1977: (page 371) Asked whether Oswald was "one of ours or one of theirs," Otepka recently grouched, "We had not made up our minds when my safe was drilled and we were thrown out of the office." One of theirs? Otepka's speciality was looking for communist agents. Might he have been interested in whether any of the defectors returning back were agents? In 1978, Otepka was interviewed by the HSCA: Note that Otepka says "he presently feels that favorable treatment which Oswald received from the U.S. government was peculiar and he is not sure whether Oswald was a genuine political defector." The first part of that sentence is very consistent with his suspicions on communist penetration amongst State Department diplomats. The second part sounds like he's been talking to too many JFK conspiracy theorists. What did Otepka really think? The best source might be Peter Dale Scott who interviewed Otepka in 1978. Here is an excerpt from his book, Dallas '63: I interviewed Otto Otepka at length in 1978; he impressed me as a sincere anti-communist who from his vantage point had rightly concluded that there was far more to the Oswald case than met the eye. He observed, for example, that State Department procedures had been violated when Oswald, a former defector, received a new passport on June 25, 1963, one day after applying for it. (Just two days later, on June 27, Otepka was permanently separated from his office and his defector file.) Otepka also found suspicious Oswald's receipt of a Soviet visa in just two days, when the normal waiting period was one to two weeks. Scott elaborated in his book, Oswald, Mexico & Deep Politics: (relevant page is here) Otepka's frustration in pursuing the Oswald matter, which he shared with me fifteen years ago, are instructive. As a right-winger who shared Angleton's profound mistrust of the Soviet Union, he feared that Oswald's defection had something to do with the KGB. He found it anomalous that Oswald received a visa to enter the Soviet Union from Finland in only two days (rather than the one-to-two weeks it normally took); and also that the USSR granted Oswald an exit visa a month and a half early. Above all, as a security officer who had spent a lifetime studying State Department procedures, he claimed to know for a certainty that Oswald in 1963 had been granted a passport when he should not have. His efforts to learn why were resisted by his own superiors at State, which compounded his suspicions of a subversive conspiracy. Otepka was not alone in his suspicions. JFK: Destiny Betrayed misleads viewers about Otto Otepka. His whole career was built on finding communist subversion and his suspicions about Oswald were driven by his anti-communism. There is no evidence to support the allegation that Otepka believed Oswald was a fake defector. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads by Claiming Jack Ruby was Signaled

Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, alleges that Jack Ruby was signaled by car horns in the basement of the Dallas Police Department. The evidence clearly shows that there were many horns being sounded in the basement. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (52:42 in episode 2) Whoopi Goldberg: He is about to be transferred to the county Jail. The FBI has called the Dallas police on both Saturday and Sunday, warning them of threats to kill the alleged assassin of President Kennedy. The police have decided to proceed with the transfer anyway. As you watch, listen for the two car horns. One as Oswald emerges, and the other the moment before Jack Ruby fires. Here is the video of Ruby shooting Oswald. You can hear the two car horns. The notion that these two car horns are signals to Ruby is just ridiculous. It was a very busy parking area with hundreds of people that morning and so it's not surprising that cars were honking. Ruby reacts to the sight of Oswald and not the car horn which sounds like it is quite distant. Where did this all come from? Mark Lane testified before the Garrison grand jury on May 10, 1967: Here is James DiEugenio's analysis from The JFK Assassination: (page 228) In 2007, Ray Marcus called me and asked an odd question. He said, "Jim, what version of Oswald's killing have you seen?" I said, "What do you mean, what version?" He said: "The one with one horn, two horns, or no horns?" I said I had seen the one with one horn. Marcus then explained that the original version has two horns but through the years, this version has been edited, and I had seen one of the edited versions. He said, "I'll send it to you. You'll understand why immediately." He was correct about the understanding. The first horn goes off at almost the exact second that Oswald emerges from the office and into the corridor. The second horn goes off about a nanosecond before Ruby plunges forward to shoot Oswald. Once you're aware of it, it is almost eerie to watch. Bugliosi describes the horns. He doesn't describe the timing. Ruby made this all even stranger in 1965. Because he then wrote a note in which he alluded to the horns. In a letter secured by Bill Diehl of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, he talks about being gravely ill and going to a hospital. He closes with, "If you hear a lot of horn-blowing, it will be for me, they will want my blood." Now I guess someone like Bugliosi could say he was referring to St. Gabriel. But yet, Ruby was Jewish." DiEugenio says that Vincent Bugliosi "describes the horns. He doesn't describe the timing." In fact, Bugliosi is quite specific and mentions who was doing the honking: (page 272 - 273 in Reclaiming History) Lieutenant Swan steps through the doorway of the jail office and into the bright television floodlights. Captain Fritz is a few feet behind him. Swain walks toward the sedan that will carry Oswald as it continues to roll back into position. The driver, Detective Dhority, hits the car horn again to clear the media away. Leavelle and Graves hesitate momentarily at the doorway, holding Oswald just inside the jail office. "Is it okay?" Leavelle asks. Detective Wilbur J. Cutchshaw, standing just outside the doorway, answers Leavelle, "Okay, come on out, Jim." Detectives Leavelle and Graves march out, Oswald firmly between them, but manacled only to Leavelle. For a moment Leavelle and Graves are blinded by their first exposure to the lights, making it impossible for them to observe any movements originating from their left front. But they soon regain their vision and are surprised that nothing is ready. The white sedan that is supposed to be parked about thirteen to fourteen feet just outside the door is still rolling back, struggling to get into position against the tide of reporters who have come around or over the railing they have been ordered to remain behind and are now surging toward Oswald. The driver blasts the horn again as Captain Fritz reaches for the backdoor handle. The horns now seem less suspicious. Here is a longer video of the Dallas Police basement. And you can hear many horns throughout the video: You can hear car horns at approximately 10:50, 11:25, 11;31 and 12:30, before the two car horn blasts referenced above. • Oliver Stone Disses the Sixth Floor Museum

My friend Steve Roe has written an excellent blog post on Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, and the Sixth Floor Museum. Here is an excerpt from his blog post: Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg: "The Sixth Floor Museum to this day insists that Oswald shot Kennedy from that (film clip of the TSBD building) sixth floor window and virtually everything in the museum is dedicated to that proposition." Folks, this is unmitigated garbage. Stone and DiEugenio have concocted a blatant falsehood, trying to paint the Sixth Floor Museum (6FM) as the holy shrine of "Oswald the Assassin." Nothing could be further from the truth. The Whoopi Goldberg quote is at 47:57 of episode one I should add that Stephen Fagin, Curator of the Sixth Floor Museum, plays it right down the middle. He never lets on whether he believes in conspiracy or if he believes that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman. The people who work at the Sixth Floor Museum are incredibly helpful. I have been there twice to review the papers of Patricia Lambert and the staff have gone out of their way to help me with her material. The Sixth Floor Museum is an important American museum. I strongly urge everybody to pay the museum a visit. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on Supposed Extra Bullet

Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, alleges that an extra bullet was found in JFK's limousine the evening of the assassination. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (26:05 in the third episode) Whoopi Goldberg: As it turns out, there was an extra bullet, and it was misshapen. After the assassination, the motorcade raced to Parkland Hospital, where the emergency room doctors tried to save the President's life. After he was pronounced dead, Kennedy's personal physician, George Burkley, got in contact with his assistant, James Young, in the White House and told him to prepare for the autopsy. Dr. Randolph Robertson: It was James Young who ordered Chiefs Mills and Martinell, their assistants, to go to the White House and retrieve what they knew were skull fragments in the limousine at that time. Whoopi Goldberg: The Presidential limousine, while en route to Washington, was inspected, and a three-inch triangular piece of bone was discovered on the floor near the rear jump seat. During the autopsy, Young sent his two assistants to meet the limo when it arrived at the White House garage. Dr. Randolph Robertson: And they brought back an additional envelope with the bullet with the bent tip. He described the bullet, brass-colored, about five millimeters in diameter. Whoopi Goldberg: As part of a Naval oral history project, Jan Herman, who had interviewed Dr. Young on this subject, got in touch with Thomas Mills, one of the two man who had gone to the limo to retrieve the skull fragments. Dr. Randolph Robertson: Jan Herman called up Mills, says "hey do you remember Dr. Young calling you, asking about this bent bullet?" He said, "yeah I remember that, him calling me, and, y'know, he remembered it." He says, "can you shed any light on it?" And he says, "I would rather not talk about that." Oliver Stone: You know what happened to this bullet? Dr. Randolph Robertson: It went from Mills and Martinell to Young to Humes, it disappears. That evening, there may have been as little as four people who saw that bullet before it disappeared. Whoopi Goldberg: The reports of this extra bullet substantiate some researchers' claim that there was a fourth shot hitting the limo at Zapruder frame 328. Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed This started in December of 2000 when James Young wrote Gerald Ford: Ford wrote back to Young: Dr. Randy Robertson wrote this all up for the Assassination Archives and Research Center (AARC). Young sat down for an oral history project: You can download the interview here. Here is an excerpt from page 45 which few people discuss: Robert Kennedy gave the orders? I don't know if this is true, but conspiracy theorists never mention this. Young discusses sending Chiefs Mills and Martinell to the limousine: (page 51) Young says that "the envelope contained three pieces of skull bone, one about three inches in diameter, and another two inches in diameter, and the third one about one to one and a half inches in diameter. It also contained a brass slug about half a centimeter in diameter and distorted." My first impression upon reading this is that they found a fragment. The 'bullet' or fragment could have been copper: (page 54) So, what really happened here? Did Young actually see the so-called bullet? He was supposedly at Bethesda when the limousine was searched. Dr. Gary Aguilar, Dr. Doug DeSalles, and Bill Simpich wrote a paper debunking the extra bullet. In the early morning hours of November 23rd, FBI Agent Robert Frazier carried out a forensic examination of the limousine. He found an impact point on the interior surface of the windshield as shown in the photo at left. It was characterized by Frazier as showing both a lead smear and a crack in the rear-facing surface of the glass. During his examination, Frazier was led to two large fragments found earlier by Secret Service agents in the front seat area of the limousine. They were subsequently found to have been fired from Oswald’s rifle. One—Commission Exhibit 567—appears to be made up largely of exposed lead. These items of evidence establish a likely narrative: A bullet from the alleged Oswald rifle strikes the back of the President’s head, sending fragments into John Connally’s right wrist, CE 567 into the windshield where it left a left a lead smear and caused a windshield flare, and finally a final fragment striking a rear-facing chrome strip above the windshield. Here is a link to Warren Commission Document 80 which details the examination of the Presidential limousine. On page three: So, Paul Paterni and Dan Boring accompanied Mills and Martinell to the White House garage. One fragment was found in the front seat "in the area between left and right front seats," and another fragment "on the floor in front of the right front seat." These fragments were turned over to the FBI and are known as Exhibits Q2 and Q3. Here is an analysis of these fragments: Here is a picture of Q3: Here is Aguilar, DeSalles, and Simpich's analysis: Dr. Young said the envelope containing three skull fragments “also contained a brass slug about half a centimeter in diameter and distorted.” The diameter of CE 569 is, of course, “about half a centimeter in diameter” at exactly 6.5 millimeters. It is made up of only copper jacket material and therefore might easily appear to be “brass.” One end of it is obviously “distorted,” as in the description Dr. Young provided. Dr. Young used the term the term “slug” to describe it and it is on this term that Robertson builds his case that a “whole bullet” was found in the limousine. The Columbia Dictionary of the English Language (2nd Edition Unabridged) lists 17 different meanings for “slug” of which two might conceivably apply to CE 569. Meaning #4 defines “slug” as “a piece of lead or other metal for firing from a gun.” Meaning #5 defines “slug” as “any heavy piece of crude metal.” Meaning #4 might conceivably apply to a whole projectile while Meaning #5 would more likely apply to a substantial fragment. Now with the whole story of what happened in the White House garage fully described in various reports, whatever Dr. Young thought he was seeing is rendered irrelevant. We know what happened. It was not just Martinelli and Mills who searched the limousine. They were given permission to search the limousine by Deputy Chief of the Secret Service Paul Paterni who then accompanied them along with Assistant SAIC Floyd Boring. Chief Thomas Mills found Q3 “on the floor in front of the right front seat.” Q3, along with Q2, were sent along to the FBI Laboratory and, as we saw, are mentioned in an FBI Report to Chief of Police Jesse Curry of Dallas on November 23, 1963. No “non-fragmented bullet with a bent tip” ever existed. Robertson made up its existence out of an ambiguity in Young’s use of the term “slug.” No “complete bullet” was ever found in the limousine. Dr. Young was referring to Q3, later designated C3, and even later designated CE 569 In addition, Mills and Paterni identified fragments Q2 and Q3 as the fragments found in the limousine: It's really unclear to me whether Dr. Young really saw the fragment. Did Mills and Martinell actually bring the fragment to Bethesda? Possibly, but here is an excerpt of testimony from Robert Frazier: I can understand the bone fragments being delivered to Humes and Boswell. But were the two bullet fragments also sent to Bethesda? It's certainly not part of the chain of possession, and I might add that Young is not listed as being in the autopsy room. He certainly might have been at Bethesda, somewhere in the building, but if an envelope was delivered to Humes, it might not have come from Young. • Exclusive: Perry Russo Talks in Baton Rouge, Part Two

Just after David Ferrie died, Perry Russo called the media in Baton Rouge to talk about his experiences with the man. Here is an audio of his conversation with WAFB, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on February 24, 1967.: This blog post has a complete transcript of the conversation. This is an important interview because it took place before Perry Russo had made any contact with Jim Garrison's office. And so this is all he knew before being injected with sodium pentothal and being hypnotized three times. Is this evidence of a conspiracy to assassinate JFK? Russo says that Ferrie talked "in general terms, not specifically about Kennedy though, about how easy it would be to assassinate a president of the United States ..." And Ferrie said it "just in a joking way, he said it could be done." Russo said Ferrie never mentioned Lee Harvey Oswald and Russo never heard the name until after the assassination. There was no mention of Clay Shaw or Clay Bertrand. It's also unclear how well Perry Russo really knew David Ferrie. He said that Ferrie talked about how Castro was getting a bad deal, and that Castro was "a good thing in Cuba." That doesn't sound like David Ferrie. He also seems unsure where David Ferrie lived. Russo also said that Ferrie had a roommate who was "sterile" as regards to politics. That might be true but, as we know, he later said that Ferrie's roommate was Lee Harvey Oswald. And Oswald wasn't "sterile" as regards to politics. Russo never informed the Warren Commission or the FBI about his conversations with David Ferrie. The assassination caught him by surprise and then Russo "forgot" about his conversations with Ferrie. Conspiracy theorists don't like to talk about this interview because it doesn't fit their narrative.
