  • Was the New Orleans Post Office a CIA Front?

Jim Garrison seemed to think so. Here is a memo he wrote in February, 1968. Here are two photos of the Old Post Office Building: You can see that the Post Office is right across the street from Reily Coffee, where Oswald worked for two months in 1963. In the first photo, you can see Mancuso's Cafe. where Banister, and many Cubans hung out in the early 1960s.. Garrison mentioned the Post Office Building again when Kerry Thornley was indicted for perjury. But, why wouldn't Thornley have a post office box in that building? After all, it was only a block or two from Thornley's apartment. His friend Greg Hill wrote, "nearly every writer in the French Quarter had a box in that post office, since publisher's checks sent to home mailboxes were notoriously subject to being ripped off by desperate junkies." Garrison never gave up on the Post Office building, and he wrote about it in his book, On The Trail of The Assassins. To learn the truth about Kerry Thornley, and why he was indicted by Garrison, read my book, On The Trail of Delusion.

  • Was Guy Banister a CIA/FBI Mastermind?

If you believe the conspiracy books, Guy Banister was some sort of CIA/FBI mastermind whose detective agency was up to all sorts of no-good government business. For instance, Joan Mellen writes in her book A Farewell to Justice: (page 68) Virtually everyone connected with Banister worked for one intelligence agency or another, so that Garrison finally said, "It's almost semantics to discuss whether Banister was ONI or CIA. What difference does it make?" The truth is that by 1963 Banister was a violent drunk who could not even pay his rent: New Orleans Times-Picayune June 18, 1964 And that wasn't all -- Banister had troubles with the IRS. Here is an excerpt from a Garrison memo, dated January 18, 1967, on an interview with Sam Newman: You would have thought that the FBI and the CIA could have straightened out Banister's issues with the IRS and at least sent enough business his way to pay the rent. In 1960, the CIA did consider using Banister's business as a cover: Here is another CIA memo about the possible usage of Banister's agency: Here is a memo with their decision: The CIA did not use Banister's agency:: Here is the CIA evaluation of Guy Banister's business: The rest of the document has additional information on Guy Banister and his business. You can read more of the CIA Office of Security file on Banister here. Of course, much is made of this document about Banister supplying information to the CIA about the sale of jeeps: Here is an article from the October 1, 1960 edition of the New Orleans Times-Picayune about the jeeps: Here is a CIA document on their relationship with Banister: Garrison might have believed that Banister "had intimate ties with the CIA and the Office of Naval Intelligence," yet he also knew that Banister was evicted for not paying his rent. You'd think he might have thought that was a clue to the real relationship between Banister and the intelligence agencies. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads Viewers on Oswald's "Hands Off Cuba!" Handbills, Part Three

The first part of this series examined the use of a fake handbill in Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series JFK: Destiny Betrayed. The second part of this series looked at the possible origin of the fake handbill. At the end of that post I presented a PowerPoint slide from a James DiEugenio presentation: Every statement in this slide is either false or misleading. Banister's statement comes from an HSCA interview with Delphine Roberts: Delphine did like to tell stories. She saw Fidel Castro and Che Guevara walking on Canal Street? Note that she says "she never saw Oswald in person." Banister's supposed statement just doesn't make sense since his address was 531 Lafayette Street. 544 Camp Street and 531 Lafayette Street were separate entrances to the Newman Building. If someone entered the 544 Camp Street address in 1963, they would have found the offices of the Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Workers’ Union and the Amalgamated Association of Street Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America. They would not find Guy Banister. She also told HSCA interviewers that "One day when Delphine, Banister and Ferrie were eating in an upstairs restaurant on either Camp or St. Charles, Ferrie showed them pictures of SHAW in full female drag. Banister took the photos and put them in a file that he kept on Shaw." In fact, Delphine Roberts did not come forward in 1963-1964 with information about Oswald and Banister. She also did not volunteer any information about Oswald and Banister to the Garrison investigation, although she was interviewed. She only started talking about Oswald when interviewed by Anthony Summers in the late 1970s. In a later interview with the HSCA she said: Now Roberts said that she did see Oswald in person and with Marina. Does this story make any sense? Oswald was either "working or attempting to work for Banister"? Roberts doesn't know? Marina came to visit with Lee? Why would Banister yell at Sam Newman, the owner of the building, for letting Oswald use a room, if he was part of Banister's operation? The HSCA was skeptical of Delphine Roberts' testimony: The HSCA Final Report noted that "much of Roberts' other testimony lacked credibility." But for DiEugenio, Delphine Roberts is a good enough source. DiEugenio is also wrong about Maynor whiting out the 544 Camp Street address. A different copy of CE 2966 is in the Warren Commission volumes with a whited-out address. Paul Hoch discovered in 1967 that someone at the GPO did that to replace a faint copy in CD 1370; a better copy from an FBI HQ file shows the absence of an address. You can see on this copy the same paper folds and markings as CE 2966 which was not stamped with 544 Camp Street: CE 2966-A CE 1412 When I blogged about the fake flyers, James DiEugenio had this to say on the Education Forum: The New Orleans Historical Society had the same flyer, not pamphlet, under glass with 544 Camp Street. Is that a fake also ? 😉 That is where our editors got it. BTW, that collection, which I have been at more than once, is a valuable place. John Volz told me that he questioned Bundy for Garrison. So he decided to test him. He asked what color were the flyers he saw exchanged that night. Bundy said they were yellow. This surprised Volz. But if you go to that collection you will see that one of the flyers LHO handed out that summer was yellow. But hey, if Litwin and Roe say so, that much be fake also, right?🤮 DiEugenio is just plain wrong about his source. New Orleans Historical is a web platform. The Historic New Orleans Collection, a different organization with museum exhibits and document archives, does have a flyer, but it is a real handbill acquired from Jesse Core, the former public relations officer at the International Trade Mart, where Oswald handed them out. Here is the flyer in their collection: New Orleans Historical, which shares stories about New Orleans, did have a story on its website about the Newman building that used the fake flyer. I emailed one of the managers and asked about the provenance of its flyer, and they have since removed the article. You can see the archived article here. I also spoke to a manager by phone. She did not have any information about where the author had found the fake flyer. It is still being investigated. And so, James DiEugenio has taken a fake flyer and combined it with questionable testimony to create a fiction. Oliver Stone said that "conspiracy theories are now conspiracy facts." The truth is that James DiEugenio has turned fiction into conspiracy theory. Another DiEugenio specialty is sourcing non-existent evidence: A non-existent map of the Dallas sewer system in the possession of Sergio Arcacha Smith. A non-existent tape recording of conspirators in the possession of Richard Case Nagell Non-existent photographs of Dealey Plaza taken by Bernardo de Torres. The non-existent map of Dealey Plaza found on David Ferrie's desk. The non-existent CIA memo about the harassment of Garrison's witnesses. A missing Life Magazine memo. A non-existent film of Oswald at an anti-Castro training camp. When necessary, missing evidence can sometimes be helpful. James DiEugenio claims that the question of what evidence Jim Garrison had that Clay Shaw conspired to kill JFK, when he was arrested, cannot be answered - because the evidence is missing! "As per what evidence Garrison had on Shaw, we will never know that as a definite sum. For the simple reason that Garrisons' files today are only a fragment of what he actually had." Proving a conspiracy in the JFK assassination is easy for James DiEugenio. After all, he can tie fake evidence and non-existent evidence into conspiracy theories that are total fiction. Unfortunately, his miraculous transubstantiation of fiction into fact is useful only to those who deny reality. • Oliver Stone Used a Fake Oswald Handbill - Twice!

In August, I published a blog post on how Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, misled the public by using a fake Oswald handbill. He also used a fake handbill in his film JFK. Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed The handbills that Oswald handed out in New Orleans either were stamped with his home address or with his post office box. He only stamped 544 Camp Street on a few Corliss Lamont pamphlets. Paul Hoch, Steve Roe and I have been doing a lot of research and starting tomorrow, I will be posting the next three parts of this series. So, please go back and read the first part of this important story. And, stay tuned for a further examination of this fake Oswald handbill. • Oliver Stone's Film-Flam

The Demagogue of Dealey Plaza PRESS RELEASE Compelling New Book Debunks Oliver Stone’s JFK Conspiracy Theories Ottawa, CA -- In his timely and powerful new book, Oliver Stone’s Film-Flam: The Demagogue of Dealey Plaza, author Fred Litwin debunks the major allegations in JFK: Destiny Betrayed -- Oliver Stone’s 2021 documentary series on the JFK assassination. While Stone calls his film a documentary and thinks of himself as an artist, Litwin shows that he is a flim-flam artist – using an extremely clever piece of filmmaking to mislead the public. Litwin’s book examines: · The formation of the Warren Commission. · The relationship between JFK and the CIA. · Why Jack Ruby killed Oswald. · How the medical evidence supports a lone gunman. · The role of imperfect memory in witness testimony. · A refutation of a possible alibi for Lee Harvey Oswald. · The chain of custody of CE 399 - the bullet found at Parkland Hospital. · The insidious claim that Dr. George Burkley, participated in a cover-up. · Spurious allegations about General Curtis LeMay. · Supposed plots against JFK in Chicago and Tampa. · The homophobic persecution of Clay Shaw by Jim Garrison. Oliver Stone’s Film-Flam is extensively sourced and contains over 600 links to the internet (in the Kindle version), as well as excerpts from many JFK assassination documents. "In preparation for hosting Oliver Stone on my podcast, I watched his four-part four-hour documentary series JFK: Destiny Betrayed … twice. I thought I was prepared, but there are so many details in Stone’s account of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy that no matter what I said Stone had another “but what about…?” What I needed was Fred Litwin’s new book, Oliver Stone’s Film-Flam, which dissects the major claims made in the film and shows them to be mistaken, exaggerated, misquoted, misunderstood, misrepresented, or taken out of context. The devil is in the details and Litwin has done the heavy lifting necessary to counter conspiracisms’ demagoguery. Everyone interested in the JFK assassination story should read this book and thank Fred Litwin for his tireless work." - Michael Shermer, Founder of Skeptic Magazine and Author of Conspiracy: Why the Rational Believe the Irrational “This book shows how Oliver Stone gets it wrong and how the evidence just doesn’t support his allegations,” said Fred Litwin. “A lot of film’s material is surprisingly easy to debunk and serves as a showcase of superficial thinking. Viewers of this documentary series deserve to know how they are being misled.” "As long as Oliver Stone is out there peddling his arrant nonsense about the Kennedy assassination, Fred Litwin will be on the case. His latest exposé on the ‘Demagogue of Dealey Plaza’ is a Herculean effort in the war against unreason." - James Kirchick, author of Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington Litwin’s book will interest historians and film critics, fans of President Kennedy, and anyone interested in the debunking of conspiracy theories. It will certainly become a necessary addition to any JFK library. "Fantasy becomes fact if essential evidence is omitted or misstated. Assassination researcher Fred Litwin unveils in Oliver Stone's Film-Flam how the master filmmaker has again misled the public. If you see the film, you should read the book." - Judge Burt W. Griffin, Retired, Assistant Counsel, President’s Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy [Warren Commission] While Oliver Stone claims that the Assassination Records Review Board (ARRB) turned conspiracy theories into conspiracy facts, the truth is that the Board simply released millions of pages of documents. It is one thing for Oliver Stone to use ARRB documents to reach his own conclusions; it is quite another thing to mislead people into believing that that the ARRB uncovered proof that there was a conspiracy. "Nearly 60 years after JFK's assassination, questions still abound over whether suspected killer Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, or even at all. But conspiracy theories are not facts. Fred Litwin's book Oliver Stone's Film-Flam firmly undermines some of the loudest theorists of the day in point-by-point factual rebuttals in an effort to accurately preserve the integrity of this historic tragedy. While some readers' minds may not be completely persuaded as to exactly what did or did not happen in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963, every reader of this book should conclude that simply being a loud conspiracy critic does not turn fiction into fact." - Mark S. Zaid, National Security Attorney Oliver Stone’s Film-Flam, ISBN: 978-0-9948630-6-5, 2023, NorthernBlues Books, 476 Pages, Paperback $18.99, eBook $7.99; Available on Amazon, Kindle, iTunes, KOBO and the author’s website: http://www.OnTheTrailofDelusion.com "I have followed Fred Litwin's research and writings for some time, especially his work on the Jim Garrison case against Clay Shaw. He is a superb researcher, marshals his facts carefully, and presents very thoughtful conclusions. Anyone trying to refute him on even an individual point had best come well prepared." - Don Carpenter, Author of Man of a Million Fragments: The True Story of Clay Shaw About Fred Litwin: Fred is the author of four books, and has written articles for the National Post, the Ottawa Citizen, and the Toronto Sun, among others. His 2020 book, On the Trail of Delusion – Jim Garrison: The Great Accuser exposed the fraudulent prosecution of Clay Shaw for conspiring to murder JFK. Litwin is a marketing professional, who worked for Intel Corporation, and organized the launch of the Pentium II in Asia. In 2000, he founded NorthernBlues Music, a cutting-edge blues label. The company has released over 70 CDs and has received over 40 Blues Music Award nominations. In 2007, Litwin started the Free Thinking Film Society to showcase films on liberty, freedom and democracy.

  • Dick Russell's Second Smoking Gun on the Richard Case Nagell Story

The first edition of Russell's book The Man Who Knew Too Much contained a smoking gun which didn't really have much smoke. The second edition has another s0-called 'smoking gun': (page xvii) "We begin with the story of a mysterious ID card. It was 1976. Richard Case Nagell had provided written authorization granting my access to files about him being maintained by his then-attorney, Bernard Fensterwald, Jr., in Washington D.C. Poring through a thick sheaf of correspondence and other documents in the lawyer's office, I came across a poor photocopy of a "Uniformed Services Identification and Privileges Card." It bore the picture and apparent signature of Lee Harvey Oswald. Although it appeared in the Nagell file, no other notation accompanied it." Here is the picture from his book of the photocopy of the card: (from the photo section after page 252) Somebody enhanced the '62' on the card on the date line. The photograph and the signature are different from the known Oswald card (shown below). The picture on the known card is believed to be from Minsk (too late for the real card) - Warren Commission Volume XXVI, page 346. Folsom Exhibit 1 in Warren Commission Volume XIX, page 665 contains details of the card (number, expiry, etc). Here is the known Oswald card: An alternative explanation is that the card found in Fensterwald's files was the real card from 1959, and that Oswald 'updated' it after its 1962 expiration with a crude date stamp, a new (post-Marines) photo, and a new signature. The card in Fensterwald's files, if not an original Oswald card, would have been fairly easy for someone to make. Fensterwald did not know how the photocopy ended up in his files and could not remember when it was received in his office. Russell showed it to Mary Ferrell who determined the card was a "replica of the 'Uniformed Services Privilege Card' issued to Oswald on September 11, 1959." Ferrell noted that the only place she had seen Oswald's card was in Judy Bonner's book Investigation of a Homicide, which was published in 1969. However, Jack White noted that two other books had the card - The Oswald File by Michael Eddowes (1977), and Jesse Curry's book JFK Assassination File (1969). Here is a photo of the card from Eddowes book: The photocopy that Russell found had a different picture than on Oswald's card and did not have a circular stamp noting October 1963. Russell then makes an unwarranted leap of faith: (page xviii) "Published in the photo section of this book, for the first time, is a reproduction of the Oswald ID card that originated with Richard Nagell. As we shall see, Nagell was in jail after September 20, 1963 -- which means that he must have had this Oswald ID card in his possession before that time, two months and two days before the assassination." The logic escapes me. All we know is that a "poor photocopy" was found by Dick Russell in Bernard Fensterwald's office in 1976. There is absolutely no chain of custody. We can't even be sure that it came from Nagell. He never mentioned the card. Surely it must have been fairly easy for someone to make. James DiEugenio, in his book Destiny Betrayed, is far more definitive: (page 94) "This is shocking because, as Nagell's biographer notes, at the time he was arrested in El Paso in September of 1963, Richard Case Nagell had in his personal effects a near duplicate of Oswald's Uniformed Services Identification and Privileges Card." There is no evidence that any such card was in Nagell's personal effects when he was arrested. Here is a list of his personal effects: Here is another more complete listing from Nagell's Secret Service file: Here is another list: (at page 188) It is quite comical to see conspiracy theorists like James DiEugenio believe that a poor photocopy, found in 1976, is proof that Nagell possessed the card when he was arrested in 1963. After all, he continually claims that the chain of evidence for a variety of evidence in the JFK assassination is faulty. In this case, there is no chain of evidence at all. For a true believer, that is no problem at all. • Highlights of Oliver Stone's and James DiEugenio's Commentary Track on "JFK Revisited"

I must be a glutton for punishment. I actually bought the Blu-Ray discs of JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass so I could listen to Stone's and DiEugenio's commentary track. As expected, there are many incredibly ridiculous moments in which they go overboard in their conspiracy madness. There is all sorts of nonsense that they both subscribe to -- nonsense that did not make the cut in JFK Revisited. Here are the highlights (lowlights?): The Sixth Floor as 'theater' Oliver Stone: The Sixth Floor seems to me to be a staging ground for your theater. This is your, this is your stage, the props are put here. James DiEugenio: Yes. Oliver Stone: The bullets, the rifle, but no one's up there. James DiEugenio: See, it wasn't secured until a half hour later. That's what people don't understand, you know. So anything could have happened up there. So, to Stone and DiEugenio, nothing about the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository is real. To them, it's just a stage full of props. It did not take a half-hour to seal the Depository. Police officer David Harkness told author Larry Sneed that "I went to the front of the building and told Inspector Sawyer that the shots definitely came from the building. So, it was probably within five minutes that the building was sealed." (Page 205 of Sneed's No More Silence. Harkness testified before the Warren Commission that they started sealing off the building at 12:36 PM. 2. Dorothy Garner was not misled by hallucinations Oliver Stone: She's an older, she's a supervisor ... James DiEugenio: Yes. Oliver Stone: She's not going to be misled by hallucinations or anything like that. So, no one's on the sixth floor, is my opinion. James DiEugenio: Well, sure as hell Oswald wasn't. During the discussion of the women on the fourth floor of the TSBD, Stone brings up hallucinations. So, despite the witnesses who saw someone firing from the sixth floor, and the fact that a rifle and bullet cartridges were found there, Stone believes that no one was on the sixth floor. 3. Jim Garrison knew he had a weak case. Oliver Stone: That trial, by the way, was the Jim Garrison trial. The notorious trial, where of course, they ridiculed me for, we put it into the centerpiece of our film, because it was the only public trial we ever had … James DiEugenio: Right. Oliver Stone: … of the Kennedy killing, which becomes a framework of the film. Garrison knew he had a weak case. And we made that point in the film – pretty clear the dialogue, but he brought the charges because it was, he thought was better in the long run, to have it on the record. And in that trial, among other things, was not only the autopsy information that came out, but also the, first showing of the Zapruder film, which is big, it was very important because it was above … James DiEugenio: Those are two very important pieces of evidence that Garrison managed to get out during the trial of Clay Shaw. Very, very crucial. So, the two things of value in the Clay Shaw trial had nothing to do with Clay Shaw. Remember, Oliver Stone told Esquire that the trial was "worth the sacrifice of one man." 4. Oliver Stone wonders who is in the coffin. Oliver Stone: Amazing shots. I wish there had been more coverage of the sixth floor, because people would understand that it was a setup, and here's Johnson going back to Washington, very famous, very famous scene and the famous coffin coming off the plane, which of course was questioned by David Lifton and people like that. Now who's in the coffin is a very good question. Oliver Stone: We're not going to go there in this documentary because it's not necessary. There's enough evidence without going into that coffin. James DiEugenio: Right. I agree. Who is in the coffin? Oliver Stone is not sure? 5. DiEugenio gets the Burkley story wrong, again. James DiEugenio: Now, George Burkley, who they were talking about now, was the only doctor who was at both Parkland and Bethesda. All right. And he did certain interviews in which he laid suspicion on whether or not Oswald was a sole assassin, and right there, you can see, others besides Oswald … notice how he says must have participated. He didn't say may have participated, but must have participated. But Burkley was never sat for a deposition by the HSCA. He was never sat for an interview by the Warren Commission. Please check our six-part series on Dr. Burkley. He did suspect that there might have been a conspiracy, but not because of the medical evidence. And Burkley did comment what he saw at Parkland and Bethesda. And here is an excerpt from an affidavit he provided the HSCA: 6. Oliver Stone believes that witnesses died mysteriously. Oliver Stone: Burkley is like Malcolm Perry but he's even more scared. You have to understand the human factor, your fear, always fear, so many of the witnesses died. So many people were mysteriously killed in the aftermath of that murder. And, it's obvious that something was going wrong. Cooperation with the authorities had a price. Someone needs to ask Oliver Stone to spell this out - who was "mysteriously killed in the aftermath of the murder"? Earlier in the transcript, Stone does mention David Ferrie and Eladio del Valle as two people who died under mysterious circumstances. Of course, David Ferrie had a full forensic autopsy and died from a berry aneurysm. Eladio del Valle was murdered, but he had nothing to do with the JFK assassination. 7. Was Oswald trying to protect President Kennedy? Oliver Stone: I'm firmly convinced that Oswald knew something was gonna go down against Kennedy. And he was thinking that I'm protecting the president. I'm helping to protect him. This is what I'm worried -- I'm working with people who were supposed to be protecting the president. Yet, in the in the months that ensue, which are closing in now, at the end of 63, he starts to realize that they're not … they're not being straight with him, that there are people who want to hurt Kennedy. So, that's what Oswald was thinking. Where did Oliver Stone get this nugget from? 8. Complete fiction from DiEugenio on Oswald and Banister. James DiEugenio: And he puts 544 Camp Street on the flyers. We know for a fact today, that’s in Oliver’s film … But we know for a fact today that Banister was very upset when he found this out. Oliver Stone: Because it seemed … James DiEugenio: That he was putting those addresses on his flyer. Oswald did not stamp the flyers with 544 Camp Street. They were either stamped with his home address or his P. O. Box. He only used 544 Camp Street on a few Corliss Lamont pamphlets. In addition, there is absolutely no evidence that Banister was upset about anything - after all, his office was NOT at 544 Camp Street, but at a separate entrance at 531 Lafayette. This is just taken from the film JFK: JFK (1991): Guy Banister intercepts him on the sidewalk, holding a leaflet and pointing to "544 Camp Street" stamped on it. Guy seems miffed at Oswald, tells him something quickly, and then moves on. Banister: "See this? What the hell is this doing on this piece of paper? ... (he moves away) Asshole.” 9. DiEugenio believes Edwin Black Uncovered the Chicago 'plot' James DiEugenio: This part of the film has gotten a lot of attention, you know, because I think it's because the public just doesn't know anything about these two plots. That happened within three weeks before Kennedy was killed. James DiEugenio: And I thought Paul [Bleau] did a very nice job on this. Oliver Stone: Yes. He also has an idiosyncratic personality on film. Oliver Stone: He's from Canada, Quebec. James DiEugenio: The guy who uncovered much of this is a journalist named Edwin Black, who wrote a very long article, I think, in 1975, during the Church Committee, and that was the first exposure of, full-length exposure of the Chicago plot, although it had been written about in bits and pieces prior, but Black put it all together in a 25-page report which you can read online. Oliver Stone: Ha. See, again, it’s amazing. Anonymous. Citizens reporters. They do their homework. James DiEugenio: Hmm mmm. Oliver Stone: It's not like- we're asleep, all of us are asleep. There is no evidence that there was a plot in Chicago to kill JFK in November 1963. Edwin Black's source was former Secret Service agent Abraham Bolden. There is no corroborating evidence for a plot, and as I have indicated in this post, Bolden has told several different versions of this story. DiEugenio is wrong when he says "it had been written about in bits and pieces prior." 10. DiEugenio doesn't know his own sources JFK Revisited makes the claim that the CIA assisted the OAS in trying to topple de Gaulle in 1961. However, he is not only wrong about the claim, but his own sources do not back him up: James DiEugenio: Now on this part of the film, Tim Weiner, writing for, the former New York Times reporter, now Rolling Stone reporter, tried to attack us by saying that this really was not accurate information. We replied to this, there's so many sources, both abroad, okay, Le Monde and L’Express in France, and in the United States, The Nation, the Washington Post, and the most amazing one, is Scotty Reston in the New York Times, where he used to work. They all said that the CIA was encouraging the French coup against de Gaulle. So, I think we're right on this and I think Tim Wiener is wrong. All right. I don't know why he said that. Oliver Stone: Well, he said it was Russian disinformation. James DiEugenio: Now, let me say one other thing about this whole Tim Weiner episode. Tim never called me. He never called me, to ask me, Jim, what are your sources for this information so he could cross-check them. He just went ahead, and he printed something in the Rolling Stone that was, I think, utterly wrong. Oliver Stone: They’re lazy. That's always the case. They don't follow. None of the real, the mainstream press, dealt with any of the facts in this film. It's very bizarre. Here is a link to my blog post. I went to all of DiEugenio's sources, and they do not back up his claim. 11. DiEugenio believes that General Lemnitzer and Allen Dulles crafted a plan for a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union. James DiEugenio: So, between Northwoods and the conference between Lemnitzer and Dulles about atomic weapons, okay. And the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy essentially steered the country away from three Oliver Stone: Yeah. James DiEugenio: … disastrous … Oliver Stone: Yes. James DiEugenio: you know, situations. Oliver Stone: Cuba. James DiEugenio: Yeah, well to dealing with Cuba. Yeah. Oliver Stone: What third one are you talking about? James DiEugenio: The Lemnitzer – Dulles conference to attack the Soviet Union in the fall of 1963. Oliver Stone: Yeah, I don't think that was ever the place to where it was … James DiEugenio: They were proposing to nuke the Soviet Union in the fall of 1963. You know Kennedy walks out, you know, and says, “we call ourselves the human race.” Oliver Stone: I just don't know how official a proposal it was, you know, because it sounds so crazy. Even Oliver Stone is skeptical about DiEugenio's claim. Here is the real story. Washington, D.C., July 22, 2014 – On the morning of 20 July 1961, while the Berlin Crisis was simmering, President John F. Kennedy and the members of the National Security Council heard a briefing on the consequences of nuclear war by the NSC's highly secret Net Evaluation Subcommittee. The report, published in excerpts today for the first time by the National Security Archive, depicted a Soviet surprise attack on the United States in the fall of 1963 that began with submarine-launched missile strikes against Strategic Air Command bases. An estimated 48 to 71 million Americans were "killed outright," while at its maximum casualty-producing radioactive fallout blanketed from 45 to 71 percent of the nation's residences. In the USSR and China, at the end of one month 67 and 76 million people, respectively, had been killed. This was President Kennedy's first exposure to a NESC report, but the secret studies of nuclear war scenarios had been initiated by his predecessor, Dwight D. Eisenhower. It may have been after this briefing, described by Secretary of State Dean Rusk as "an awesome experience," that a dismayed Kennedy turned to Rusk, and said: "And we call ourselves the human race." The allegation that a US first strike was being planned comes from an article by James Galbraith. The above article notes: (emphasis added) President Kennedy received his first NESC briefing during a well-attended NSC meeting at 10 a.m. on 20 July 1961, in the midst of the Berlin crisis. What has been declassified from the summary presents a dire picture of a post-attack United States and Soviet Union, and the excised portions may show an even more calamitous picture. It may have been after the presentation, described by Secretary of State Dean Rusk as "an awesome experience," that a dismayed John F. Kennedy turned to Rusk and said: "And we call ourselves the human race."[11] On the basis of a sketchy record of this NSC meeting, one researcher [James Galbraith] concluded that the 1961 report was an actual plan for a "preemptive strike" on the former Soviet Union.[12] But this confuses the NESC's analytical purposes with the nuclear war planning which went on elsewhere in the federal government. The topic of the 1961 report was the usual Soviet surprise attack and U.S. retaliation, all taking place in the fall of 1963. The summary included a striking overview statement: "the scope and intensity of destruction and the shattering of the established political, military and economic structure resulting from such an exchange would be so vast as to practically defy accurate assessment." Estimated population losses were huge: in the USSR and China at the end of one month: 67 million and 76 million people respectively. The United States "suffered severe damage and destruction from the surprise Soviet attack … Tens of millions of Americans were killed outright; millions more died in subsequent weeks. The framework of the federal and of many state governments was shattered." Between 48 and 71 million were killed and casualties increased during the year that followed. A detailed record of this meeting has not surfaced, but the previously mentioned summary includes President Kennedy's admonition that the meeting and its purpose were to be kept secret. Nevertheless, some word about the event leaked and an article by Fletcher Knebel-co-author of Seven Days in May published in 1962-mentioning the briefing appeared in Look Magazine on 21 November 1961. In a memorandum to President Kennedy, McGeorge Bundy rebutted the Knebel article point-by-point. 12. Oliver Stone continues his nuttiness on Ukraine. Oliver Stone: This is a duplicity of our leaders. And, it's going on now in Ukraine. Duplicity. From our side, a lot of it. The question is, do we really care about Ukraine? No. Do we want to destroy Russia? Yes. 13. Oliver Stone and Roger Craig. Stone and DiEugenio believe Oswald knew something was up, and he goes to his rooming house and then to a pre-arranged meeting at a theater. The Tippit shooting is left out of their scenario. Stone also believes that Craig was murdered, when, in fact, he committed suicide. Oliver Stone: So, you know, we don't know what Oswald was thinking, and we can't assume that we do. But certainly, in my movie of ‘91, I suggested that Oswald, at this point, that after the shooting, a minute after, knew that something was up. James DiEugenio: Right. Oliver Stone: And that, all of a sudden, he was, I'm sure he was aware that he would be possibly pinned on it. James DiEugenio: Yes, I agree. Oliver Stone: So, what does he do? He heads out calmly, to his … James DiEugenio: He goes out the front door. Oliver Stone: … to his boarding house. James DiEugenio: He goes back to his boarding house. He gets his handgun. Okay. And he goes to a theater. Oliver Stone: To have a pre-arranged meeting. James DiEugenio: That's what it sounds like to me. Yeah. Oliver Stone: Where he was betrayed. But some people say that he was seen getting into a Rambler outside the Depository. James DiEugenio: Roger Craig said that. Oliver Stone: Roger Craig said that. He was killed, unfortunately. Wonderful man, I think. But he was seen with a Cuban driving, or two Cubans driving. James DiEugenio: A station wagon, yes. 14. James DiEugenio Misquotes John Stringer. John Stringer was the autopsy photographer. As you can see from his testimony before the ARRB, his memory was very poor. He never said that he did not take the photographs of JFK's brain. DiEugenio is putting words in his mouth. James DiEugenio: In my opinion, this is probably some of the most important evidence the ARRB produced. And I'm so glad we got Doug to talk about it in the film. John Stringer admitted under oath that he didn't take those pictures of the brain. All right. “I never used that kind of film. I never used that kind of a process. So no, I didn't take I didn't take those pictures.” All right. So, then that leads to the question. Well, who the hell did take the pictures? And why did there have to be another set of pictures? 15. Oliver Stone reveals the truth. Oliver Stone: I’m proud to have my name there. You should be too. Hey, you know, we never ever get to bask in any glory with these folks. You know. Just so hard to make. But, man, I feel good about it. Feel good about it. Even if it didn't get any attention from mainstream. James DiEugenio: You did a good job going around the mainstream. Oliver Stone: A mouse crying out in the wilderness. Oliver Stone's so-called documentary was ignored by the mainstream media, and that forced Stone to rely upon outlets like RT for coverage. He truly was a mouse. Over the past several months, I have shown in multiple blog posts how Oliver Stone's documentary series, JFK Revisited and JFK: Destiny Betrayed, misleads viewers. In fact, despite months of work, there are still many more misleading segments that need to be addressed. It's no wonder that the fact checkers of Netflix nixed the airing of the films. There is a choice between four hours of tendentious nonsense (JFK: Destiny Betrayed) and two hours (JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass). As a handy guide for viewers, here are all those posts in order of their appearance in JFK: Destiny Betrayed and JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, preceded by some general critiques

  • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads Viewers on Oswald's "Hands Off Cuba!" Handbills

Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, misleads viewers into believing that Oswald gave out handbills on the streets of New Orleans with the 544 Camp Street address. In fact, Oswald used his real address or his P. O. Box on those handbills, and the 544 Camp Street address was only used on Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC) pamphlets by Corliss Lamont. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (10:55 in episode 4) Whoopi Goldberg: Another person Oswald was seen with in New Orleans in 1963 was Guy Banister. Banister was an extreme right-winger who was close to the FBI, the CIA, and the American Nazi Party. Banister gave Oswald his own office at 544 Camp Street. Oswald now began to use his office to print up and stamp pro-Castro literature, much of it associated with the Fair Play for Cuba Committee centered in New York. Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed There is no evidence to support the allegation that Oswald had an office at 544 Camp Street. In JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, Jefferson Morley makes a similar point about the pamphlets: (1:09:32) Jefferson Morley: In the spring of 1963, Oswald started handing out pamphlets for the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, a pro-Castro, pro-Cuban Revolution group that was popular on college campuses and some of them he stamped 544 Camp Street which was an office in downtown New Orleans near where the CIA's offices were, right across the street, in fact. It was also the home of the Cuban Revolutionary Council which was the leading anti-Castro group. Why would a pro-Castro activist put his headquarters in the same headquarters as the leading anti-Castro group in the country? Because he was a provocateur. According to the HSCA, the Cuban Revolutionary Council (CRC) only had offices at 544 Camp Street for about six months in 1961-1962. Sam Newman, owner of the building, told Jim Garrison that the CRC was only in the building for the last three months of 1961. This was well before Oswald had moved back to New Orleans in the spring of 1963. He also had no recollection of ever seeing Oswald in or around the building. Oswald ordered 1,000 handbills from Jones Printing in New Orleans, and these flyers he stamped either his home address or his Post Office Box. The Corliss Lamont pamphlets that he stamped with 544 Camp Street were from a limited stock that he received from the Fair Play for Cuba Committee in New York. JFK: Destiny Betrayed moves the 544 Camp Street stamp to the 'Hands Off Cuba' handbills to increase the importance of the address stamp. To reiterate: the handbills that Oswald gave out three times in New Orleans did not have 544 Camp Street stamped on them. He only stamped 544 Camp Street on pamphlets by Corliss Lamont. When Oswald was arrested in August 1963, the handbill that was confiscated by the police did not have the 544 Camp Street address: Here are Warren Commission Exhibits 2966-A and 2966-B: Here is one of the Lamont pamphlets with the 544 Camp Street address: Note that only the flyer (a.k.a. handbill) tried to lure the recipient to a destination: “Join... Free Literature... Lectures.... Location” If Oswald was really intending to be a provocateur, he would have tried to lure people to 544 Camp Street, no? Instead, he is luring them to his home or his Post Office Box. What about the handbills that allegedly contain the address 544 Camp Street? The handbill shown in JFK: Destiny Betrayed is fake, and its precursor in Oliver Stone's feature film, JFK, was also a fake. Let's start with those. There is a fake flyer in Robert Groden's 1993 book, The Killing of a President: (page 141) Gus Russo published a similar handbill in his 1998 book, Live By The Sword: There are several errors in the old fakes which are obvious once you see them. Compare the Groden and Russo handbill with the real thing: Note that the Groden and Russo handbills have a lower-case l in Literature, while the real pamphlet has an upper-case l. In addition, the word LOCATION in the real handbill starts under the i in Literature, while in the fake handbills, LOCATION starts under the t. There is also a different spacing of OC in LOCATION -- the fake flyers have more space. These fake handbills were made for Oliver Stone's film, JFK. Now one can make a reasonable case that using such a fake handbill in a fictional film is quite ok. Keep in mind that Oliver Stone combined four real people into his composite character Willie O'Keefe, So, dramatic license does give some leeway to stretch the truth. I have argued, and I would still argue, that turning Jim Garrison into a heroic prosecutor was a bridge too far. But to use fake handbills in a documentary is to turn fiction into fact. And that needs to be called out. Here is a screenshot from JFK that shows the handbill: Note the small l in literature, and that the word LOCATION starts under the t in literature. This is clearly a fake handbill. As for the handbill used in JFK: Destiny Betrayed, DiEugenio also used it in a PowerPoint presentation: I will discuss his allegation that FBI agent Harry Maynor "whited out" the 544 Camp Street address in an upcoming post. It was not done by the FBI, and it was not done for nefarious reasons. Stay tuned. In addition, DiEugenio's quotation is just plain fiction derived from JFK. (see page 34 in JFK: The Book of the Film) DiEugenio: Banister was very upset when he learned Oswald was arrested with his address on a pamphlet. "How is it going to look for him to have the same address as me?" JFK (1991): Guy Banister intercepts him on the sidewalk, holding a leaflet and pointing to "544 Camp Street" stamped on it. Guy seems miffed at Oswald, tells him something quickly, and then moves on. Banister: "See this? What the hell is this doing on this piece of paper? ... (he moves away) Asshole.” While the flyer is more carefully done there is one unambiguous proof of fakery. The size of the L.H. Oswald stamp, in relation to the handbill. Here is the real thing: And here is the DiEugenio handbill: The size is all wrong. On the fake flyer, the stamp takes up most of the space between LOCATION and EVERYONE WELCOME. On the real flyer, the stamp is much smaller. Compare the size of "L. H. OSWALD" and "LOCATION" in each of the two flyers. You can easily see the size differences between the real handbill (on the top) and the fake handbill (on the bottom): In addition, Lee Harvey Oswald put a period after LA on his handbills and pamphlets. The fake flyers do not have a period after the LA. Oswald might have changed his punctuation just as he changed the content of his stamp, but he could not have changed the type size. And James DiEugenio has used his fake flyer on more than one occasion. For instance, here: And here: It's one thing for Oliver Stone to use a fake flyer in JFK. It's quite another for James DiEugenio to continually use a fake flyer on his website. And, for James DiEugenio and Oliver Stone to use a fake flyer in a documentary film turns it into the transubstantiation of fiction into fact. James DiEugenio and Oliver Stone owe us an explanation. Perhaps someone found out that Oswald did not use 544 Camp Street on any of the handbills in the archival record. John Newman suggested an explanation for their absence from the official record in JFK: Destiny Betrayed: (12:28 in episode 4) John Newman: At some point, the FBI, I think probably after the assassination, decided they wanted to disconnect Oswald from the FBI. And of course, Banister, who's associated with the FBI would have to be disconnected as well. The problem with that, many of those handbills had the 544 Camp Street address on them. There was a message from New Orleans to the bureau written by a special agent Maynor, who actually mentioned pamphlets that had the 544 Camp Street address on it. And before that message was sent, it was scratched out. Here is one page from that document: The crossed-out notation at the top reads as follows: Several Fair Play for Cuba pamphlets contained address 544 Camp St. There is no evidence that the note was written by special agent Maynor. The note might have been added after the message was sent. There is a sentence in the above document about Sam Newman, owner of the Newman building on the corner of Camp and Lafayette, who "does not have any recollection of any individual by that name [Oswald] ..." Paul Hoch found this message as it was actually sent: A more precise version of the scratched-out sentence was added: ON AUGUST EIGHT SIXTYTHREE, OSWALD FURNISHED A PAMPLET ENTITLED CRIME AGAINST CUBA BY CORLISS LAMONT. PAGE THIRTYNINE OF PAMPLET BORE STAMPED IMPRESSION QUOTE F P C C FIVE FOUR FOUR CAMP ST. NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA. UNQUOTE. The document cited by John Newman was a draft; various edits marked there were implemented when the text was sent to FBI HQ. There is no evidence that 544 Camp Street was stamped on any of the handbills that Oswald handed out on the streets of New Orleans. But it was important to the producers of JFK: Destiny Betrayed to have a strong Oswald link to that address. Thus, they decided to use fake handbills to bolster their incredibly weak case. A big thank you to Paul Hoch who contributed most of the research on this blog post. Don't miss the Viewer's Guide to JFK: Destiny Betrayed and JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass. • "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on David Ferrie and the CIA

Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, erroneously claims that David Ferrie flew missions for the CIA. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (10:14 of episode 4) Whoopi Goldberg: In the spring of 1963, Oswald moved from Dallas back to his home town of New Orleans, where he began associating with men who, it would be revealed, had clear connections with these government efforts. One of these men, David Ferrie, had been with Oswald in the Civil Air Patrol back in 1955, and was known as an extreme anti-communist. He was also a trainer and a pilot for the CIA in its secret war against Cuba. Oswald was involved with these Cuban exile training activities with Ferrie. While it is true that Oswald, for a very brief period, was in the Civil Air Patrol at the same time as David Ferrie, there is little evidence that they knew each other. Here is a blog post that covers this supposed relationship. And David Ferrie was not a trainer for the CIA and he was not a pilot for them either. James DiEugenio inferred from a December 1967 statement of Mr. Herbert Wagner, a man who had helped David Ferrie with his finances, that Ferrie was involved in Operation Mongoose. I have already blogged about this here. Ferrie also bragged to Wagner about some of his activities. Here is an excerpt of the Garrison memo: The Wagner memo above references an Operation Mosquito, which DiEugenio believes is really Operation Mongoose: (page 115 in Destiny Betrayed) When Operation Mongoose began, Ferrie let it slip that he was part of "Operation Mosquito." Clearly a miscommunication, Ferrie meant Mongoose. But Wagner definitely heard 'mosquito' - he even made a joke about it. Furthermore, Operation Mongoose took place in 1962 which is after David Ferrie left his Cuban activities to focus on his problems with Eastern Airlines, and his legal problems regarding a morals charge. As mentioned above, Ferrie was ostracized by the Cubans after his August 1961 morals arrest. New Orleans Times-Picayune, August 26, 1961 Another source for the allegations about David Ferrie was Eladio del Valle. Here is what DiEugenio wrote in Destiny Betrayed: (page 85) Ferrie developed an obsession for the regime of Fidel Castro. This led him to become more intertwined with the Agency and its underground Cuban exile community in New Orleans. He bombed targets inside of Cuba at the request of former Cuban Congressman Eladio del Valle. Del Valle was linked to the CIA, Santo Trafficante, and Senator George Smathers. The source for the del Valle claim? None other than the National Enquirer. An article in the National Enquirer from April 1967 claimed that David Ferrie flew "scores of missions" with del Valle to drop bombs on Cuba. The author, Diego Gonzalez Tendedera, claimed to have inside information about Eladio del Valle: There is no evidence to support any of this. It is doubtful that he flew to Cuba. Ferrie was asked about flying to Cuba in his first interview with the D,A.'s office on December 15, 1966: Here is what Stephen Roy (aka Blackburst), the expert on the life of David Ferrie, wrote on an internet forum about Ferrie flying to Cuba: "I have spent many years examining the life of David Ferrie and his role in the New Orleans milieu. I have conducted numerous interviews with primary sources and obtained or read many thousands of pages of documents relating to these matters. Ferrie's period of activity with the Cubans was very brief, beginning in late 1960 and abruptly ending in the fall of 1961 after his morals arrests. Throughout most of this period, his whereabouts are established by his employment and other records. He had very little opportunity to fly any missions." Roy also added: "Having looked very closely into the career of David Ferrie, while I cannot rule out the possibility that he may have made such flights at some juncture, I make the following observations: 1) Prior to September 1961, Ferrie was flying for Eastern Air Lines three times a week from New Orleans to Houston and other Texas cities, including two overnighters. There would not have been a great deal of opportunity for him to have made such flights from Florida. (And the flight log on his Stinson contains no indication of any such flights.) 2) Prior to April 1961, Ferrie was not fully accepted as an active participant by the anti-Castro Cubans. 3) After his August 1961 morals arrests, Ferrie was soon ostracized by the Cubans. Further, his Stinson soon entered a long period of inactivity. Ferrie denied ever going to Cuba. However, he did tell a friend about one sojourn into Cuba in August 1960, which he said was for the CIA. He said he was wounded in the process, but his friends doubted this. So the assertion that Ferrie made "flights" or extensive flights into Cuba is not strongly supported by the evidence." The friend that Stephen Roy refers to is Al Cheramie who was also a member of CAP. Ramparts writer Bill Turner told Stephen Burton that Al Cheramie could provide more information about Ferrie's "Cuban adventures." Here is an excerpt of a memo that Stephen Burton sent to Jim Garrison: Here is a transcription: "I began by reading CHERAMIE the lead TURNER gave me. He said that the reference to FERRIE's gunshot wound was correct only in that FERRIE said that it was a gunshot wound. He saw FERRIE when he returned from Miami when FERRIE said he had been shot while flying for CASTRO in Cuba. However, Cheramie said that the scar looked like a burn. It was in the chest o the extreme right side but had no exit wound. He added that FERRIE was prone to making such false statements." Another friend of David Ferrie's, Al Landry, told a similar story: Landry was a fifteen year old kid when this supposedly happened. David Ferrie wanted a relationship with Landry and as Al Cheramie remarked, liked to make up stories. There is no evidence in the autopsy report of such a wound, nor do pictures of Ferrie on his death bed show such a scar. Stephen Roy writes in his unpublished manuscript, Perfect Villain: David Ferrie and the JFK Mystery: While the sources on Ferrie's anti-Castro activities from, at the earliest, summer 1959 to about October 1961 are many, detailed, mutually corroborative and reliable, there are no reliable sources for significant anti-Castro activities on his part after October 1961. This is an important point missed in most studies of Ferrie's life and career. The single thread of Al Landry's runaway, pulled by New Orleans area police, led to the virtual collapse of Ferrie's life: his job, his Falcon [CAP] group, his position in the anti-Castro group and his standing in the community. While he would have loved to have continued on in the fight against Castro, nobody would have him. What scattered reports there are of anti-Castro activities by Ferrie in 1962 and 1963, such as running training camps, all come from sources of questionable reliability and are impossible to corroborate. Ferrie had other battles to fight. There is no evidence that David Ferrie worked for the CIA and no evidence that he flew missions for them. There is also no evidence that he was involved with any anti-Castro Cuban training activities with Lee Harvey Oswald. • Did David Ferrie Introduce Jack Martin to Lee Harvey Oswald in Banister's office?

Sounds like a game of Clue, no? Jack Martin James DiEugenio, in his book Destiny Betrayed, writes: (page 389, see also page 112 for the same story) "In a stolen December 14, 1966, Garrison memorandum, Jack Martin revealed that David Ferrie had introduced him to Oswald in Banister's office. With Ferrie at the time was Sergio Arcacha Smith." His source? None other than Probe Magazine, Volume 4, No. 4, page 8. That issue of Probe Magazine indicates that his source is "handwritten notes of one of the earliest interviews Garrison's office had with Jack Martin." DiEugenio found these notes in Edward Wegmann's files, and they are based on a 12/14/1966 interview between Martin and Garrison. Tom Bethell mentions this interview in his diary entry for March 12, 1968: "Garrison in briefly with Gary Schoener from Minneapolis, and Mark Lane. Schoener has been collaborating with Salandria and Katen. Talked to him briefly in my office. In afternoon I read the transcript of a v. interesting interview Garrison had with Jack Martin, on Dec 14, 1966. It lays down much of the subsequent case, as he links Oswald with Ferrie, and also, obscurely, Sergio Arcacha Smith, whom Garrison evidently had not heard of until Martin mentioned him. The interview was tape recorded." That tape is at the National Archives - I will see if I can make a copy on my next trip to Washington D.C. However, there are two major problems with Jack Martin's allegation. First, he was insane, and no one took him seriously in New Orleans. Secondly, Sergio Arcacha Smith was not living in New Orleans in 1963. DiEugenio then cites another Jack Martin interview held a day earlier. Here is that document: (be aware of disgusting racist language) Some comments on this memo: Like many Garrison interviews, this was one was recorded. I doubt Martin knew that Gervais was wired. Martin uses some pretty horrible language. Martin claims that Oswald had an office in the Newman building and that James Arthus "had all of Oswald's paraphernalia." Other Jack Martin claims: Oswald learned how to order guns from Ferrie. Ferrie was in Dallas and lied about it. He had his Stinson plane in Dallas. The police found foreign made guns, "just like the one that killed President Kennedy" when they raided Ferrie's house. Martin says he met Oswald at Ferrie's house and Morris Brownlee was also there. A black man, Phillips, associated with Brownlee was in the Texas School Book Depository. Ferrie was in Dallas two days before the assassination. He was to fly three people to Laredo, TX or Mexico. Towards the end, he changes the story and says he never saw Brownlee with Oswald when Ferrie was around. Earlier, he said he met Oswald at Ferrie when he was with Brownlee. DiEugenio doesn't ignore this memo - but he only quotes the part about Oswald having an office at Camp Street. He ignores all the other Martin craziness. DiEugenio never questions Martin's credibility. Martin's story would always change. Here is his formal statement to the Garrison investigation made a few weeks later. Now, a different story, and one that Martin did not tell the FBI or the Secret Service back in 1963 - he did not mention Oswald back then. Here is a short FBI memo that mentions Jack Martin from 1963. Here is some background information on Jack Martin from an FBI report from 1963: The Richard Billings Diary has two interesting entries on Jack Martin from December 1966 - January 24, 1967: "Garrison says he has a witness (Martin) who says he saw Oswald and Ferrie in Banister office, 'But he's a liar who hates Ferrie.' . . ." "Garrison says that when Oswald in New Orleans in 1963 (April to September) he was seen two or three times with Ferrie -- at office of W. Guy Banister, former FBI agent (SAC, Chicago), right wing extremist, later a private eye in New Orleans until he died in June 1964 . . . Information apparently came from Jack Martin, the man who had tipped DA's office that Ferrie had known Oswald, had taught him to fire a rifle and had flown him to Dallas in September-October, 1963 . . . interesting point about Banister-Martin: police report shows Banister pistol whipped martin on day of assassination, reportedly -- by a secretary in office -- in an argument over JFK . . . Charges dropped by Martin, who turns out to be an undependable drunk and a totally unreliable witness . . ." And, here is an excerpt of a tape recording of a conversation between Hugh Exnicios (Q). lawyer for Al Beauboeuf, and Lynn Loisel (A), a Garrison investigator. Loisel has a pretty low opinion of Martin: And finally, here is a memo that Aaron Kohn, head of the Metropolitan Crime Commission wrote about Jack Martin: Jack Martin was interviewed by the HSCA. Here is their conclusion: Tomorrow: Jack Martin talks to the press with more stories.

  • Did Delphine Roberts See Lee Harvey Oswald in Banister's Office? (Part Two)

Please check out Part One of "Did Delphine Roberts See Lee Harvey Oswald in Banister's Office?" Mary Brengel worked for Guy Banister for a short period in 1963. In May 1967, she wrote Jim Garrison a letter offering to be interviewed about her knowledge of what went on in Banister's office. Here is her letter to Jim Garrison: Here is my transcription (please help fill in the blanks): Dear Mr. Garrison: I am aware from the publication in the newspapers of his picture, with an arrow pointing to his office door, that Guy Banister may possibly figure somewhere in the case you are building. I worked in his office from the latter part of October until about the 10th of December, 1963, during which occurred several rather strange or unexplained (to me) things (however not associated with Cubans). If you feel that anything I might tell you could help to throw - [ , , ,] light on missing details, I would appreciate talking with you confidentially - though naturally I would like to stay out of "the limelight." Mrs. Delphine Roberts worked much more closely with and a great deal longer for Mr. Banister than I - so if you are in contact with her and if she is speaking freely about the incidents that bring questions to my mind - then I could add nothing. I do question that she would speak freely and if she may have omitted mentioning any persons I might mention, I surely would not want her to know I offered information until after you had my information. Is there a question about whether Mr. Banister's death in June 1964 was from natural causes? I do question this as well as the roles of others in connection therewith. My transcription: I am employed by Mathews, Bergman, Farrah + Associates Architects, as Office Manager and secretary to Mr. Mathews and can be reached at their office at 929 Howard Avenue - Third Floor - during working hours, Mon. thru Friday. Two office phone number are shown below. There is, in fact, a small conference room in my office which might serve well for a short confidential talk. Please understand I am convinced after Channel 4's presentation last night that you are seeking the truth and are - even though you know the truth -- being blocked on various details. I would hate to furnish information against anyone I consider a conservative particularly Mr. Banister, but as you, too, seem to feel the American people (and the world) deserve the truth about Kennedy's assassination, regardless of where that truth lies. Only you can assess whether the facts I could provide are meaningful or are merely trivia which would naturally raise questions in the mind of a person doing temporary work for a private investigator. Please let me know if I may be of assistance - preferably, of course, on a confidential basis. Ms. Brengel clearly wanted to tell her story - she seemed very anxious to help the Garrison investigation. And so she met with two Garrison investigators at her home: Note that she did not say one word about Lee Harvey Oswald - just like Delphine Roberts. Brengel's main suspicion was that Delphine Roberts might have had foreknowledge of Guy Banister's death. Mary Brengel was also interviewed by the HSCA: Brengel does not mention anything about Oswald being in Banister's office. How do the conspiracy books treat Brengel? James DiEugenio writes in Destiny Betrayed: He doesn't report that Brengel did more than "believe that both Banister and Roberts had some prior knowledge of the assassination." She told the HSCA that "she has wondered if BANISTER was not in Dallas on 11-22-63 and in fact was one of the men with a high-powered rifle there." Here is Brengel's submission to the ARRB: Funny how she gets the date of the assassination wrong (September 3,1963). Might this be age-related confusion? Now, her statement to the ARRB does confirm what DiEugenio writes in Destiny Betrayed. But notice the difference between her initial statement to Garrison and her later statement to the ARRB. First, she says that Roberts got a phone call that Kennedy had been assassinated and that she should turn on the TV. It's not unusual for a detective agency to have a television in the office. In her second statement, Roberts brings a "pocket radio" to work on the day of the assassination, and then receives a phone call. There is no mystery of suspicion in her first statement. In her ARRB statement, she suspects Delphine Roberts of having advance knowledge of the JFK assassination and she also suspects that Banister might be part of it. Her only suspicions in her Garrison statement was that Delphine Roberts might have advance knowledge of Banister's death. The other DiEugenio claim is about Oswald: This is true. But note what Brengel said: Delphine told me that both Lee Harvey Oswald and David Ferrie, as well as others who figured in the government hearings, had been in the office many times while I worked there. But Brengel only worked for Banister from October 15, 1963 until December 15, 1963 and Oswald could not have been in the office then. Furthermore, when did Delphine Roberts tell Mary Brengel that Oswald had been in the office? Probably after she talked to Anthony Summers -- perhaps she was cajoling Brengel to back her up. Brengel told the HSCA that she started working for Banister in June, which is not what she told Jim Garrison in 1967. As shown above, she wrote a letter to Garrison in which she stated she worked for Banister from October to December 1963. So, her claim to the HSCA is probably the result of poor memory. Of course, if the June 1963 date is the correct date (which I doubt) then it is important to note that she did NOT see Oswald in the office during the dates at which he was supposedly there. And here is Brengel's account from a 1979 interview which I found in the files of Gus Russo at Baylor University. Now, Oswald is left out totally and it's just David Ferrie that Roberts tells her she had seen: Both Delphine Roberts and Mary Brengel are just not believable witnesses.
