- Sylvia Meagher's Review of "The Kennedy Conspiracy" by Paris Flammonde
Here is Sylvia Meagher's review of Paris Flammonde's book, The Kennedy Conspiracy: An Uncommissioned Report on the Jim Garrison Investigation , which was published in 1969. The review appeared in the March 7, 1969 issue of Commonweal . Money Quote: The uncommissioned book glows with Flammonde's sincere enthusiasm and faith in Garrison and his "case." Undoubtedly, his intention was to produce an unweighted presentation; but he failed, and produced one that it totally uncritical. By accepting "facts" that are not facts at all, by equating unsupported or insupportable allegations with demonstrable truth, and by overlooking at times parts of the record which are destructive to his theses, Flammonde has built a structure that leans so precariously toward Garrison and rests on so insubstantial a foundation as to doom it to collapse. Here is a letter from Sylvia Meagher letter to Tom Bethell in which she mentions Flammonde's book: Here is a letter from Sylvia Meagher to George Rennar in which she mentions Flammonde's book : Here are some of Meagher's comments on Flammonde's manuscript which she did not send : But Meagher did send these notes: Previous Relevant Blog Posts regarding Sylvia Meagher and Jim Garrison Mary Ferrell and Sylvia Meagher Discuss Jim Garrison An exchange of letters about Jim Garrison. - Fred Litwin on Paranoid History
I was a guest this week on Joseph Flatley's podcast to discuss the new JFK assassination files. Welcome to the latest bonus episode of "A Paranoid's History of the United States." I'm your host, Joseph L. Flatley. On this podcast, we navigate the murky waters between verified government conspiracies and outlandish theories, attempting to bring clarity to a world often obscured by misinformation and disinformation. While our bonus content is typically reserved for paid subscribers, we've decided to make this timely conversation "free to the people," so to speak. Today, I'm joined by Fred Litwin, an author who has been researching the JFK assassination as long as I've been alive. As detailed in his book I Was A Teenage JFK Conspiracy Freak , Fred began his quest for the truth after watching the Zapruder film as a teenager. In our conversation, Fred discusses the recent release of JFK assassination files, the role of secrecy in fueling conspiracy theories, how the KGB actively spread disinformation about the assassination, and his assessment of figures like Mark Lane and Oliver Stone. We also explore what might have motivated Lee Harvey Oswald to assassinate President Kennedy. Also, be sure to check out my previous interview with Fred, for an in-depth discussion of Oliver Stone and Mark Lane, among many others:
- Was Israel Behind the JFK Assassination, Part Two
I've already written about Tucker Carlson blaming Israel for the JFK assassination. It appears that several so-called influencers in the right-wing media have embraced antisemitism and naturally now blame Israel for the assassination. I am really happy that a conservative magazine, Commentary, has noticed. A week earlier, another star MAGA podcaster, Candace Owens, received the coveted guest spot on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend. The career path of Von, a stand-up comic and a former cast member on MTV’s Road Rules, is remarkably similar to Rogan’s. (Rogan even got his first break on MTV back in 1994.) Owens is a provocative conservative influencer whose most notable original novelty was that she is black—and who has descended into obsessive and conspiratorial Jew-baiting. Owens talked to Von at length about her problems with Israel. It uses America as its “piggybank,” harbors pedophiles, is involved in some type of Moroccan blackmail scheme involving the wife of France’s president, ran a “sexual blackmail” empire through Jeffrey Epstein, and probably killed JFK. Here is the episode of Theo Von's podcast with Candace Owens: Here is an excerpt from a transcript (1:02:15) Theo Von : So you connect a lot of dots between like, Israel and media, right, or but do you think that it's just capitalism, like, don't you think a lot of times it's just like, it's just business, and that's how business works, is that they're, you know, like it's one of the side effects of capitalism. Candace Owens : If that were the case. So, the reason why this is different is because Israel is actually the exception. They are the only country that's allowed to lobby Americans, like everyone else has to register, as, you know, foreign agents and under FARA. Theo Von : What do you mean? Like with AIPAC or whatever? Candace Owens : Yes, so AIPAC, the back story, by the way, before JFK got shot, he was fighting AIPAC. They were previously called, I'm blanking on this. It was, you can look it up. And he was literally saying you have to register under the Foreign Act. Theo Von : Is that true? Candace Owens : 1,000% sure. And you should look it up. We should fact check that live. He was fighting with what is today known as AIPAC, as was renamed AZCPA. I don't know if that's the ... Theo Von : In 1959 AZCPA was renamed the A, was renamed AIPAC and American Israel Public Affairs Committee, reflecting a broader membership and mission. Candace Owens : Yeah. So JFK told them that they had to register under FARA and so American Zionist Council, that's exactly what it was called. Theo Von : American Zionist Council was a pro-Israel lobby in the United States, Canada founded in 1949 it represented nine nationwide Zionist organizations in matters ... Candace Owens : See at the bottom there, in 1962 President, look at the last paragraph. Theo Von : In 1962 John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby, as the US Attorney General, forced the AZC to register as a foreign agent. In doing so, they were barred from making monetary contributions to US officials. Who was barred? AZC? Candace Owens : Yeah. So, AIPAC, for lack of a better term, they were called AZC back then. But continue to send out newsletters and hold events with with a nonprofit tax exemption. And then what happened was he was shot. So, he literally like they were writing letters. You can find this is all like, this is available information. And he was like, you need to register. You need to register. You register. And then we told you to register. Why are you not registering? This makes no sense. And then he, AIPAC got lucky, because he got shot and killed. Theo Von : What, also you could, like Candace Owens : So they are the only, the reason why I'm bringing this up, is not to further conspiracy theories. Theo Von : They're the only country? Candace Owens : They're the only country allowed to lobby Americans, that are not registered the FARA act. And so when you see these people ... Theo Von : Under the what act? Candace Owens : FARA, so that's like, if you're a foreign agent, you have to basically register. Your communications are monitored, all this stuff. But for whatever reason, Israel is an exception to this. And the reason is because JFK got shot, because otherwise they would have been under this, so that is the reason that they're allowed to do this. And so, you know when this and then, of course, we're not allowed to read the files. But leading up to his death, he was having arguments with the Prime Minister, Ben Gurion. That's a fact, another fact, he was having, he had arguments with Ben Gurion. And then the problem, yeah, look it up. Another right-wing antisemite is Dan Bilzerian , who has 1.9 million followers on X (formerly Twitter). While Bilzerian isn’t sure exactly how many Jews were killed in the Holocaust, he confidently blames the Jews for killing JFK, citing the fact that Jack Ruby (who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, not the president) was born Jacob Rubenstein. The JFK theory helps illuminate how this conspiracy pipeline operates—and how the people who claim to question everything are often the most susceptible to groupthink. Why would the Jews kill JFK? Because, Bilzerian explains, President Kennedy wanted the predecessor organization to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee to register as a foreign agent. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (43;09) Patrick Bet David : Let me go to a different conversation with you. Recently, you know, when I watched some of your tweets, I don't know if you've announced this or not. I don't know if you've joined AIPAC. I don't know if you are, you know, you know if you are an advisor for them. Let me read some of these tweets. You know, "Muslims aren't the problem, the open borders and motherfuckers and the media attacking nationalism, pushing DEI, transgenderism and destroying moral values are the problem." August 4, "if you don't put America first as a US politician, you are committing treason. Supporting Israel is bad for America. Netanyahu is a convicted war criminal, and Israel is not our ally. We fought way too many wars for Israel, and we certainly don't need to give them any more money." July 25 "These idiots have ruined movies. Everything they put out is literally propaganda." And then all of a sudden we got scripture here, "for what shall it profit? For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" Is this recent, You know, comments you're making about Israel, a recent thing. Or have you always had these beliefs? Dan Bilzerian : It's more recent. I didn't really realize what a problem it was until recently, and then everybody was scared to say something about it. My brother told me, like, you know, you can't say anything about it. They'll fucking kill you. Like everybody, basically said that I couldn't say anything about it. And actually now they're like, literally, like, trying to, like, kick me off the board of my company because of those tweets. like shit. I've definitely had a lot of like, negative pushback out of my Jewish friends, but I don't give a fuck, you know. It's like, one of those things where I know that it's the right thing, and the fact that everybody else is scared to say it makes me, you know, feel obligated to be vocal about it, Patrick Bet David : Why do you think it's the right thing? Dan Bilzerian : Because I know that they're a fucking parasite, like they provide the U.S. absolutely no value. They've done so many things that you know would constitute, you know, an act of war against us. I mean, USS Liberty, Lavon affair. I could go on and on and on and on and on, but, you know, I think they knew about 9/11, I think they had JFK assassinated. The first thing that he wanted to do, you know, right before he died was, you know, make AIPAC a foreign entity, and not allow them to have nukes, and then all of a sudden, this fucking guy's dead. And Jack Ruby was Jack Rubinstein, you know, I mean, it's just like, like, and then he just, I don't know, man, I can't ignore all the shit that they've done to sold their secrets. Netanyahu lied to us about weapons of mass destruction. We fought all these fucking wars. My friends have died over there like, you know, and I just look at what they provided us with, and it's fucking, it's not nothing. It's like a negative, you know, even if they just didn't do jack shit that would be, you know, bad, but they've actually done things to hurt us over and over and over again. So like this whole thing of they're our greatest allies, is complete fucking bullshit. And, you know, we send them $100 billion then they send AIPAC $100 million and then they distribute it to our politicians. Then every politician has a little fucking AIPAC handler walking around tell them what to fucking say and how to vote. And it's just like, Look, I'll go. I donate like, 100 grand the politicians, you know, and they call me up, like, hey, you need anything? Like, every week, I don't need shit. I fucking sit on my ass. I don't do anything. I don't care. I don't fucking break any laws. I don't need any favors. Like, I just gave it to him because I don't want to see any more fucking retard, you know, Democrats in there. So, you know. But that's 100,000 like, where's 100 million buy you? How many fucking phone calls those guys get, you know? And so I just know how it works, and the system is broken. Like these people get into office and they don't have very much money, and they get out of office with fucking tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. It's not a fucking accident, right? Ian Carroll has over 1.2 million followers on X: He was then asked this question, and you can see his reply: And here is Myron Gaines, who has 277,000 followers on X: His YouTube channel has over 1.5 million subscribers. Here is another supposed right-winger: One of the tiny handful of other individuals who has been willing to discuss the crucial role of the Israeli Mossad in the Kennedy assassinations has been longtime French conspiracy-researcher Laurent Guyénot. I would strongly recommend his 2019 work The Unspoken Kennedy Truth as the best book presenting the Israel/Mossad case for the JFK Assassination. Although I might not necessarily endorse every single element, this paperback summarizes all the important information and is short enough that it can easily be read in just a day or two. Guyénot also presented this same controversial material in the form of a 2022 documentary available on YouTube. Although perhaps a little too hagiographic, it constitutes the best video documentary on that subject. I should add that the American Zionist Council (AZC) received a couple of small grants from Israel and that was the source of the trouble with authorities. The AZC ultimately became the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and foreign contributions were not allowed. Here is more on Ron Unz. American writer Ron Unz said in a January 28, 2023 interview on Channel 4 (Iran) that former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon was the "kind of guy" who was reckless enough to plan the 9/11 attacks in order to cause America to fight the countries and groups that were hostile to Israel. He said that no country benefited from 9/11 more than Israel did and that Israel got away with it because U.S. media and politics are controlled by its supporters. He also claimed that the Mossad was most likely behind the assassinations of JFK and of Robert Kennedy, and that it had even planned to assassinate President George Bush. Here is some data on the problem of blaming Israel :

- A Kennedy Plot to Kill Castro?
In the late 1990s, my friend Larry Haapanen obtained a stack of documents from David Lifton that had been released by the ARRB. He recognized that one of the documents might have some incredible significance, and provide proof that the Kennedy brothers had discussed, and condoned, attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro. Here is the document: This paragraph on page three caught Larry's attention: The Attorney General then mentioned Mary Hemingway [Ernest Hemingway’s widow], commenting on reports that Castro was drinking heavily in disgruntlement over the way things were going, and the opportunities offered by the “shrine” to Hemingway. I commented that this was a conversation that Ed Murrow [the former news broadcaster then heading the US Information Agency] had had with Mary Hemingway, that we had similar reports from other sources, and that this was worth assessing firmly and pursuing vigorously. If there are grounds for action, CIA had some invaluable assets which might well be committed for such an effort. McCone asked if his operational people were aware of this; I told him that we had discussed this, that they agreed the subject was worth vigorous development, and that we were in agreement that the matter was so delicate and sensitive that it shouldn’t be surfaced to the Special Group [an elite interagency group that reviewed covert actions] until we were ready to go, and then not in detail. I pointed out that this all pertained to fractioning the regime . If it happened, it could develop like a brush-fire, much as in Hungary, and we must be prepared to help it win our goal of Cuba freed of a Communist government. [Emphasis added.] Gus Russo and David Corn then wrote an article about the memo for The Nation : Russo and Corn first mention another 1962 memo in which Robert Kennedy said that a solution to the Cuban problem carried "the top priority in the United States government -- all else is secondary." Here is that document : Corn and Russo then discuss the newly found Lansdale memo : In the memo, Lansdale mentioned no further details about an operation that could take advantage of the Hemingway “shrine,” a reference to the farm Hemingway had owned in Cuba, which was then being converted into a museum. He was writing in his own sort of covert-op-speak. In another memo, he used a term similar to “fractioning the regime” to refer to anti-Castro actions that included the assassination of Castro. ( An August 13, 1962, Lansdale memo employed the phrase “splitting the regime” to describe activities “including liquidation of leaders.”) With Operation Mongoose ultimately aimed at prompting a popular uprising in Cuba, the Kennedy men could well have been hoping that an assassination would spark such a “brush-fire.” Lansdale’s description of the Hemingway plan as “so delicate and sensitive” that its specifics should be hidden from the Special Group is another tip-off that the operation involved assassination. “That’s the giveaway,” says Peter Kornbluh, a senior analyst at the National Security Archive and a specialist on US documents regarding Cuba. “This is the closest thing to a smoking gun that has been declassified. Only assassination would be taboo for open discussion at the Special Group, which routinely planned sabotage, violence and chaos to undermine Castro.” Loch Johnson, an intelligence expert who worked on the Senate Church Committee (which first disclosed the CIA assassination plots in 1975), says the Lansdale document is “a fascinating memo. It looks like another one of the plots against Castro.” Several CIA alumni support this interpretation. Ted Shackley, who served as Miami chief of station during Operation Mongoose, remarks, “It certainly has the earmarks of an assassination plot.” Samuel Halpern, who was the number-two to the officer who ran the CIA end of Operation Mongoose, calls the document “as close as we’re likely to get” to conclusive proof. And a former CIA director says, “The language of the memo speaks for itself. The only thing Robert Kennedy can be referring to is the assassination of Castro. This paragraph should never have been written.” It is not clear what specific operation Robert Kennedy was referring to at the March 16 meeting. Neither Halpern nor Shackley recalls receiving orders for a mission involving the Hemingway farm. Those Mongoose records that have been declassified do not refer to an assassination attempt at the Hemingway home. And none of the meeting’s participants are alive. Kennedy’s Defense Secretary, Robert McNamara, who was scheduled to attend this session but did not, says of this conversation and the Hemingway-shrine operation, “I don’t know anything about it. The whole Mongoose thing was insane.” The March 16, 1962, meeting occurred at a time when Operation Mongoose was revving up. Lansdale was busy concocting plans for infiltrating Cuba with commando and sabotage teams. The CIA’s Miami station was hurriedly recruiting agents in Cuba. At another Mongoose session five days later, Robert Kennedy, who was the de facto supervisor of the covert campaign against Castro, raised the prospect of kidnapping top-level Cuban leaders. (The previous year Robert Kennedy had been informed that the CIA had attempted to kill Castro before the Bay of Pigs invasion.) In April 1962 the CIA’s murder plots against Castro were reactivated. That month, Shackley and Bill Harvey, the CIA official in charge of operations against Cuba, delivered a U-Haul filled with arms to a mob-linked hoodlum named John Rosselli, who was supposed to transfer the weapons to Cuban exiles interested in murdering Castro. (The available historical record shows no other Mongoose meetings attended by President Kennedy.) According to Lansdale’s memo, the discussion of this particular operation had been triggered by comments made by Mary Hemingway, who had had a brief encounter with Castro eight months earlier. On July 2, 1961, Ernest Hemingway killed himself with a shotgun in Ketchum, Idaho. Shortly after that, Mary Hemingway, his fourth wife, decided to travel to Cuba to visit Finca Vigia, the farm Hemingway owned outside Havana, and retrieve manuscripts, paintings and other belongings. Before she left Ketchum, a Cuban government official phoned and said that Cuba wanted to establish a museum at Finca Vigia. Because there was a US ban on travel to Cuba, Mary enlisted the assistance of William Walton, a journalist and artist close to President Kennedy. Walton asked the President for help, and within hours Mary was cleared for the trip. Valerie Danby-Smith, who had been Hemingway’s secretary (and who would later marry his youngest son and assume the Hemingway name), accompanied the widow. When the two women arrived at the end of July, according to Valerie Hemingway, Castro sent them a big basket of fruit and word that if they required assistance they should contact him, for he was a Hemingway fan. And several nights later, Castro came calling. In her autobiography, Mary Hemingway, who died in 1986, noted that Castro “arrived in his jeep, accompanied only by one nondescript car.” He had brought just a few aides with him, no battalion of bodyguards. “There was not much security, and that impressed Mary,” Valerie Hemingway recalls. Mary lined up the servants to greet the Cuban chief. Castro came into the house. Mary served him coffee. They discussed the transfer of Finca Vigia to the Cuban government; Castro reminisced about having fished with Ernest. “Much of the conversation was banter,” Valerie Hemingway says. Castro inspected the mounted animal heads and asked to see where Hemingway had written his stories. Mary guided him to the three-story tower she had built as a writing studio for Ernest several yards from the main house. (“Ernest hated the tower and always wrote in his bedroom,” Valerie Hemingway notes.) At the tower, Castro, without waiting for his aides, bounded up the stairs to the office on the top floor, and Mary followed. “Mary was also impressed with that,” Valerie Hemingway says. “She thought that any other national leader would have ordered an aide to go up ahead of him. Make sure it was safe. It was an ideal place to do in Castro. She would remark on that many times over the years.” In the weeks afterward, Mary and Valerie sorted out the mess at Finca Vigia; Hemingway had started coming there in 1938, but he had not been back since the late 1950s. They reviewed thousands of pages of unpublished work, burned his personal papers (in accordance with his wishes), labeled the animal heads (who shot it, when and where), put the house in order for display and packed up possessions Mary wished to keep. Since they could only take hand luggage with them on the return flight to Miami, they arranged for a shrimp boat heading to Tampa for repairs to transport crates holding Hemingway’s papers, paintings by Paul Klee, Juan Gris and André Masson, and other keepsakes. From September 1961 to January 1962, Mary Hemingway, still in shock over her husband’s suicide (she considered it a gun accident), stayed in Idaho. Sometime around February, she returned to her flat in New York City. And she shared with her friends stories about her trip to Cuba, her meeting with Castro and how she had managed to spirit Hemingway’s papers and the paintings out of Cuba. In the second week of March, stories appeared in the New York Times and the New York Post about her time in Cuba, though neither mentioned Castro’s light security detail and his cavalier climb to the top of the tower. One of her friends, Clifton Daniel, the assistant managing editor at the Times and husband of Margaret Truman, contacted US Information Agency chief Edward R. Murrow and suggested that he speak with Mary Hemingway. As Murrow replied to Daniel in a March 20, 1962, letter, “Mary Hemingway did call. We had an interesting and useful conversation and I passed her remarks on to one or two interested parties down here.” (The USIA was a participant in Operation Mongoose. Daniels and Murrow are deceased.) “The tower could be the key to it,” Valerie Hemingway says. “It was what impressed Mary Hemingway the most about Castro.” Valerie Hemingway insists that Mary Hemingway would not have consciously aided or abetted a scheme against Castro. In her autobiography, Mary recalled attending a dinner at the White House in April 1962, where she “irked” President Kennedy by calling his confrontational position toward Cuba “stupid, unrealistic and, worse, ineffective.” Assassinating Castro at the Hemingway site does seem far-fetched. But in the secret war against Castro, the US government entertained many bizarre ideas, including dusting his shoes with a chemical that would cause his beard to fall out. One scheme called for the use of pyrotechnics to light up the Cuban sky in order to convince the Cuban people that the Second Coming was at hand; presumably, they would then rise up to overthrow Castro. (“Elimination by illumination,” as one official dubbed it.) Yet at the time of the March 16 meeting, the CIA was probably not in a position to mount a hit against Castro, despite Lansdale’s overly optimistic assessment that the agency possessed “invaluable assets which might well be committed for” the Hemingway-shrine endeavor. “We didn’t have any assets that could do anything with this information then,” says John Sherwood, a former CIA case officer who worked on the Cuba task force. “We had a few agents in Cuba who could send us secret-writing intelligence reports. That was it.” But, Sherwood adds, that did not stop US intelligence from hatching ideas: “All kinds of things bubbled up then. If Mary Hemingway goes to her cottage in Cuba and comes back and says something about a slight security detail or anything else, people would have been interested. No one knew anything. Any information about Castro was exciting. We never penetrated his entourage. We never knew where he was.” I reached out to Larry Haapanen to see if he wanted to comment further on this story, and he kindly sent me this message: THE LANSDALE MEMO My experiences with the Lansdale memo began in 1998, when David Lifton furnished me with a set of copies of the over 2,000 pages of Cuba documents that had been recently released as part of a review of JFK assassination-related files. In the course of examining the release, I came across one document that caught my attention above all others. It was the memorandum, prepared by General Ed Lansdale, of a meeting on March 16, 1962, attended by members of the Special Group Augmented (which included Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy) as well as by President John F. Kennedy. When I realized that one part of the memo referred in guarded terms to what seemed very much like a discussion of a "shrine" to Hemingway and how that location might be used in an attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro, I did some research and concluded that the "shrine" was the farm called Finca Vigia, located outside of Havana, Cuba, which had been owned by the novelist Ernest Hemingway and turned into a museum by the Castro regime the year after Hemingway's July 1961 death by suicide. Hoping to discover more about the Finca Vigia, and what was meant by the "opportunities" it presented, I turned to How It Was , a memoir written by the novelist's widow, Mary Welsh Hemingway, and found that she visited the Finca Vigia in the summer of 1961 to retrieve some of their possessions, and while there she was paid a visit by Fidel Castro. Her description of how he arrived accompanied only by a light security detail strongly suggested to me why the SGA meeting found the Finca Vigia might suit their purposes. The importance of the memo became clear: although a number of President Kennedy's close aides had testified in the 1970s to the Senate Church Committee that President Kennedy had never countenanced U.S. government plots to assassinate Castro (William F. Buckley once compared their denials to the "Von Rundstedt Offensive" of World War II), it occurred to me that the discussion of the "opportunities" presented by the Finca Vigia would never have taken place in the presence of President Kennedy if he had "virgin ears" with respect to assassination plots against Castro. This meant that the memo was a potentially explosive piece of evidence that had escaped the attention of the Church Committee. David Lifton and I brought the memo to the attention of Gus Russo, who in turn got David Corn interested in it. This led to their writing the article "The Old Man and the CIA: A Kennedy Plot to Kill Castro?" in the March 26, 2001 issue of The Nation magazine, an article that examined the conclusion that it reflected an actual discussion of a potential assassination plot against Castro. Although the story in The Nation received attention in the press of several foreign countries, it seems to have garnered only slight attention in the United States, and I know of no biographer of John F. Kennedy who has taken notice of it. Jonathan Nashel, in a book about Lansdale entitled Edward Lansdale's Cold War (University of Massachusetts Press, 2005), called the memo "[t]he most convincing evidence yet involving assassination ..." (p. 740), Robert Robarge, in his official biography John McCone As Director of Central Intelligence 1961 - 1965 (Central Intelligence Agency, 2015) wrote that "McCone's possible knowledge of an anti-Castro assassination plot is suggested in a memorandum by Lansdale about an SGA meeting on 16 March 1962, attended by President Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and ... the DCI." (p. 98), and Gus Russo and Stephen Moulton wrote in Brothers in Arms: The Kennedys, The Castros and the Politics of Murder, that "the March 16 SGA confab provides convincing evidence that the Kennedys were directing the assassination probes." (p. 170) At least two books about the JFK assassination have also mentioned the memo, the first being Conspiracy in Camelot: The Complete History of the Assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy (Algora Pub., 2003); author Jerry Kroth notes the discovery of the memo and the implications of its contents, and stated that "if true, this event shows Bobby was involved in assassination plots against Castro." (p. 257) The second book takes a more skeptical view; in Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy (W. W. Norton, 2007), Vincent Bugliosi wrote that "[t]o my knowledge, only one document has ever surfaced that, arguably, goes in the direction of RFK (and hence, JFK) having knowledge of, and perhaps even urging, the assassination of Castro." Referring to the Lansdale memo, he went on to write that "[t]hose who believe that the Kennedy brothers were behind the attempts on Castro's life view it as a "smoking gun," but when we look closely at the document we see that, by itself, it could never carry the day for that proposition." (Endnotes and Source notes, on CD) As I have said before, it's not the documents you find that make all the difference, it's what you make of the documents you find that makes all the difference. The Lansdale memo is a case in point. Larry also sent me a letter from Edward R. Murrow to a friend of Mary Welsh Hemingway, dated March 20, 1962, saying that he [Murrow] had talked to Mary. Larry received this letter from Mark Allen, who found it amongst Murrow's papers in Washington, D.C. The letter corroborates the indication in the memo that RFK said in the meeting that Murrow had talked to Mary Hemingway: (see page 3 in the memo above) Gus Russo writes in his book, Brothers in Arms : The Kennedys, the Castros, and the Politics of Murder : (page 143) In order for Mary [Hemingway] to go to Cuba legally, she had to gain permission from the United States government. The embargo prevented travel there, but through an intermediary, William Walton, who went straight to the President, she was able to start planning her trip. As a result of Jack Kennedy's helping gesture, the finca would become one of the most unlikely settings for a plot to assassinate Fidel. It would also provide the only written evidence of what has been denied by the Kennedy family to this day -- that Jack and Bobby knew of the murder plots, and condoned them. In 1968, Robert Kennedy seemed to have some remorse about JFK's Cuba policies noting that "I have ... wondered at times if we did not pay a very great price for being more energetic than wise about a lot of things, especially Cuba." ( Harris Wofford, Of Kennedys and Kings: Making Sense of the Sixties , page 426) A big thank you to Larry Haapanen for his additional comments on this story, and to Gus Russo for his help. - RFK Jr. Disrespects the Memory of his Father
I've already blogged about how RFK Jr. misquoted JFK . In this video, RFK Jr. talked about the assassination and his father with Russell Brand. It’s a good example of how he uses three quotes attributed to his father to support his own current conclusion that the CIA was behind his uncle's assassination. Unfortunately, the quotes are not even solid evidence of RFK’s initial instinct, much less evidence that RFK had a basis for that instinct, as Mark Allen has concisely and effectively pointed out in this new article. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (19:05) RFK Jr .: My father's initial reaction when his brother was killed, the first call that he made was to the CIA desk officer in Langley. And he said, and he said, "did your people do this?" Then he called up, the next call was Harry Ruiz, who is a Cuban refugee who I knew well who was a constant fixture in our household. He had been at the Bay of Pigs. He had fought side-by-side with Castro in the Sierra Maes - you know, after they all came back from Mexico, he was an engineer, he'd been very close to Castro and then turned on Castro when Castro went communist. He was a very close friend of my father's and by the way, I've talked extensively with Castro about this, all this stuff, too. Oh, my father called Harry Ruiz, and said to Harry Ruiz, "did your people do this?" meaning the Cubans, because the Cubans, at that time, had turned on my father, my family and hated them and felt they were traitors because they had not rescued them at the beach. And because they had ended the raids of Alpha 66 and the other groups that were raiding Cuba all the time. So, the Cubans were very angry at my parents, my father thought, and they were all linked with the CIA. My father thought maybe that the CIA had done it, maybe using Cubans. And then a third conversation he had that morning -- I had been brought home from Sidwell Friends School when my uncle was shot. And I arrived at the same time John McCone arrived at my house, who was the director of the CIA at that time, and my father brought him for a walk in the yard and said the same thing to him, "Was it the CIA who did this to Jack?" So, you know, my father's first instinct, which was a good instinct, turns out, was that the CIA had killed his brother. JFK assassination researcher Mark Allen has written a terrific article in the July 7th issue of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune debunking RFK Jr.'s stories about his father. Here is a link to the Haynes Johnson article in the Washington Post which is the source of the Harry Ruiz story : Now I was to meet one of those friends, with whom I had been working so closely, to celebrate the end of the project. He, in turn, as one of the Cuban leaders of the Bay of Pigs invasion and the closest such person to the administration, had reached an important point. That afternoon he participated in the most crucial of a series of secret meetings with top-level CIA and governmental people about what he always called "the problem of Cuba." The meeting was terminated abruptly. That's how Harry heard the news, as I did over my car radio driving back into Washington. With the world suddenly turned upside down, we both headed to the Ebbitt to keep our now numbing rendezvous, Harry arriving before me. When I got to his small, sparsely furnished room, I put in a call to the attorney general of the United States, with whom I also had become close during the same period. Robert Kennedy was utterly in control of his emotions when he came on the line, and sounded almost studiedly brisk as he said: "One of your guys did it." I had been working at The Evening Star and as I stumbled out of the Ebbitt lobby my overpowering instinct was to get back to "my" paper and write something. Since I was still on leave, I had no paper and no outlet for expression. I don't think I have ever felt so frustrated and empty as when I bought a copy of The Star's extra with the bold black banner headlines reporting the news from Dallas. I was shaken by that news and by what Robert Kennedy had said to me. (He was wrong, as it turned out. In those early minutes of confusion after the assassination, apparently the first report he received, whether from the FBI or Secret Service I never knew and never asked, had identified Lee Harvey Oswald as being involved with the anti-Castro Cuban group.) In another article , Johnson elaborated on the story: Months later, in Washington, the afternoon of Nov. 22, 1963: I had arranged to meet the same Cuban at the Ebbitt, the small, modest tourist hotel on H Street where the CIA used to place the Cubans. He had just come back from a meeting with high U.S. officials on, as he always said, "the problem of Cuba." There, we learned of the Kennedy assassination. He was told by Robert Kennedy, in a phone conversation, that "one of your guys did it" -- a mistake that grew out of the confusing early reports the attorney general was then receiving about Lee Harvey Oswald's Cuban connections. The story about John McCone comes from the oral history of Walter Sheridan : Sheridan : I think he was. I think he believed [William] Gurvich that [Jim] Garrison had nothing. I don’t know what he himself really thought about the whole thing. I was always reluctant to talk to him about it. I think his basic feeling was that John Kennedy was dead and it didn’t really matter. But one thing he said that was interesting was sometime during the Garrison thing, and I think it was about this time when I was bringing Gurvich up, because of course Garrison kept getting into the CIA [Central Intelligence Agency] involvement. One time he said to me, he said, “You know, at the time I asked Dulles [Allen W. Dulles] if he killed my brother, or if they had killed my brother and I asked him in a way that he couldn’t lie to me, and they hadn’t.” It wasn’t quite that blunt but it was pretty blunt. What he was saying was that he had looked into that possibility and was satisfied himself that they weren’t involved. Sheridan's story is about Allen Dulles and not John McCone. However, Mark Allen contacted the New York Public Library and received some documents from their Arthur Schlesinger collection. In 1977, Schlesinger wrote Walter Sheridan thanking him for letting him look and use excerpts from his oral history: Sheridan corrected this part of his interview: On December 5, 1963, Schlesinger brought up the topic of the assassination with RFK: RFK suspected, according to Schlesinger, Castro or the mob. He did not mention the CIA. David Belin, a former counsel with the Warren Commission and Executive Director of the Rockefeller Commission, spoke to John McCone about RFK. Here is an excerpt from his 1988 book Final Disclosure : The Full Truth About the Assassination of President Kennedy : (page 217) RFK Jr. has the story wrong. RFK was not concerned about the CIA, but about possible blowback from the various plots against Castro. Allen also mentions that there were warm feelings between the Kennedys and Allen Dulles. In fact, Robert Kennedy asked Lyndon Johnson to appoint Dulles to the Warren Commission. RFK had some warm words about Dulles in his oral history, Robert Kennedy: In His Own Words -- The Unpublished Recollections of the Kennedy Years. Here is an excerpt from page 14 : Another excerpt from page 55 : And an excerpt from page 252: Kudos to Mark Allen for clarifying what exactly happened. - 1991 Tosh Plumlee Interview, Part One
Here is an interview from July 21, 1991 that was conducted in Florida. Gus Russo and associates were thinking of making a film about JFK conspiracy stories and they decided to interview Plumlee. - Closing the Casket on JFK's Assassination
I want to thank Michel Gagné for his terrific review of my book, A Heritage of Nonsense: Jim Garrison's Tales of Mystery and Imagination. One of the major stories in my book was that of Richard Case Nagell: A third example [ tales of grifters and charlatans, the other two being Raymond Broshears and Rose Cherami] , the longest chapter in Nonsense , relates the detailed life story of a decorated U.S. Army intelligence officer named Richard Case Nagell who described himself to Garrison as a CIA-KGB double agent and associate of Lee Harvey Oswald who refused to take part in the CIA-sponsored coup d’état, and who owned a trove of incriminating evidence supporting such claims (none of which has ever surfaced). Conspiracists chronically leave out the details of Nagell’s life story following his unlikely survival from a plane crash that left him with a traumatic brain injury, cognitive neuroses, depression, alcoholism, suicidal ideation, numerous arrests and mental health interventions, and countless attempts to gain attention and money, including by telling gullible researchers whatever they wanted to hear. Much has been made of Nagell’s September 1963 arrest for discharging a weapon in a New Mexico bank, which he sometimes claimed was to save himself from being “silenced” like Oswald but was more likely a desperate attempt to receive treatment from a veteran’s hospital. Nagell’s stories were convoluted, ever changing, and mired in inaccuracies and clear fabulations, but nonetheless selectively mined by the Garrison gaggle for useful but unproven factoids. In the end, Nagell’s military and intelligence training, paranoid disposition, and cognitive skills and impairments all combined to make him a powerful magnet for the irrationally anxious who want to believe him, but the facts show him to be a broken man who knew very little and needed much help. Here is Michel's conclusion: On the whole, A Heritage of Nonsense is a thought-provoking and well-documented read for anyone interested in the JFK assassination and Jim Garrison in particular, as well as the origins and evolution of conspiracy theories. That includes the effects of circular reasoning, or the unwarranted influence of self-interested swindlers in shaping historical memory. In short, Nonsense serves as a powerful rebuttal to Garrison’s falsely mythologized legacy as a crusader for justice and to the paranoid fables still being peddled by DiEugenio, Mellen, Douglass, Russell, Stone, and Garrison’s other apostles. However, since this book was avowedly written as a companion piece to Litwin’s earlier On the Trail of Delusion , readers new to the Garrison drama would be advised to start there, and perhaps also to read Patricia Lambert’s False Witness , before sinking their teeth into this compendium of less well-known Garrisonisms. Given that the minds of conspiracy-prone fabulists never tire of weaving new yarns into their grand speculative tapestries, this book is likely not going to be Litwin’s final opus. But it does give the reader sufficient reason to close the book on Jim Garrison’s ambitious fantasies, and to go stamp out other malicious wildfires. But please read the whole review. You can purchase my book here. A Heritage of Nonsense contains nine stories that illustrate Jim Garrison’s malfeasance, his paranoia, and his conspiratorial mindset. There is a commonality that runs through this book: the insidious nature of conspiracy theorists, gullibility that stretches the imagination, and a smattering of mental illness. For the first time ever, you’ll read about the East German Stasi files of Richard Case Nagell, a man who desperately needed psychiatric help; the truth about Rose Cherami who supposedly had foreknowledge of the JFK assassination; a gay rights activist who channeled Lee Harvey Oswald at a séance; a Las Vegas entertainer who became a suspect in Garrison’s investigation because of one phone call; and the search for a lost map of Dealey Plaza. I even solve a longstanding JFK assassination mystery. And a whole lot more.
- "JFK: Destiny Betrayed" Misleads on CIA Involvement in Plot against de Gaulle
Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed . misleads viewers by alleging the CIA was involved in a plot against the life of French President Charles de Gaulle. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (25:24 in the first episode) Donald Sutherland : Beyond a coup, in fact, there were at least six attempts to assassinate de Gaulle by the OAS, and others that continued even after he agreed to grant Algeria its independence. Scene from The Day of the Jackal [Clip started when that narration did.] Screen shot from JFK: Destiny Betrayed (25:36 - 25:50: clip continues; shooting at a car, no voiceover] Donald Sutherland: In one of these plots, there is evidence that French dissidents and the CIA conspired to poison de Gaulle. JFK: Destiny Betrayed briefly shows the top of page one of the June 15, 1975 edition of the Chicago Tribune: The alarmist headline belies the text in the body of the article; In the outline presented to the congressional leaders, there is no hint of what the CIA's actual role might have been had the plot reached fruition. Also, there is no indication whether the CIA was to have arranged the assassination, provided the ring, or merely given its unofficial sanction to the killing thru financial or other support. JFK: Destiny Betrayed misleads viewers by leaving the impression that the CIA was involved in assassination attempts on de Gaulle. But the CIA had absolutely nothing to do with the 1962 plot against de Gaulle in the fact-based but fictional film, The Day of the Jackal. Right after the clip, the film quickly transitions to the Chicago Tribune story. As you can see from the Tribune article, the text doesn't really match the headline. There are very few specifics and there is no indication that the CIA initiated or did anything in this supposed plot. And, of course, all of this followed the segment about supposed CIA involvement in the 1961 coup attempt on de Gaulle. You can read more about what really happened in the coup attempt here. Here is William Colby's submission to the Rockefeller Commission about the supposed poison pen attack: This never turned into a CIA embarrassment because nothing really happened. The producers of JFK: Destiny Betrayed thought the Chicago Tribune headline could serve their purposes, without informing the audience of what really happened. - John Stringer on JFK's Wounds and his Autopsy Photographs
Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed . tried to make the case that John Stringer photographed a brain that was not JFK's. You can read my earlier blog post on this issue. This is also covered in my book, Oliver Stone's Film-Flam: The Demagogue of Dealey Plaza. John Stringer actually wrote a book about his life as a Navy photographe r: On page 76 he writes about JFK's body being received in to Bethesda: All parts of the body were intact and you could readily identify the facial features of JFK. There was a wound on the right side of the head over the ear and towards the rear. His appearance was normal except for the wound over the ear and the defects in the neck and throat area. On page 78 he writes: The brain that was examined and photographed was the same specimen that was removed from the President during the autopsy. Stringer was quoted in the Vero Beach Press Journal on August 8, 1974: Here is what Stringer told the ARRB : Here is how Stringer described the back of the head in his ARRB deposition : Stringer was also interviewed by the AP in 1998: Tampa Bay Times, October 26, 1998 HSCA investigators took Stringer on the morning of August 15, 1977 to the National Archives to view the autopsy photographs. He mentioned the photographs of the brain: He didn't say anything about not taking the photographs of the brain, although he was unsure of taking the black and white pictures: Stringer says that "he only took color photographs," but yet the autopsy inventory lists many black and white pictures. It sounds like his memory is starting to falter. And t here were both black & white and color transparencies of the brain . Stringer indicates that the color transparencies of the brain (basilar and superior) were definitely taken by him. And while he might have been unsure about the black and white transparencies, he did not mention any discrepancy between them and the color transparencies. And no one has ever raised an issue of a discrepancy between the two sets of photographs of JFK's brain, surely an indicator that it's the same brain. Stringer was also asked about his review of the autopsy x-rays and photographs in 1967: The reason why conspiracy theorists are insistent that Stringer took photographs of a different brain is that the left hemisphere of JFK's brain is intact, which would rule out a shot from the front or right-front. Therefore if you believe that JFK was shot from the front, you cannot accept the legitimacy of the photographs of his brain. By the way, if you read Stringer's testimony before the ARRB (as I pointed out in my previous blog post) there were serious issues of memory. He often couldn't remember details and he even got mixed up about what types of film he used. John Stringer died in 2011 and his family asked that donations go to the Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Association : Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Association, 2300 5th Avenue Suite 150, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or to the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960 in memory of Mr. Stringer. - Marilyn Sitzman on JFK's Head Wound
Marilyn Sitzman worked for Abraham Zapruder and was standing with him when he was filming on Elm Street. Here is a still image from her oral history project with the Sixth Floor Museum that shows the location of Kennedy's head wound. Here is an excerpt from a transcript (4:31) Interviewer 1 : OK, then you you saw the motorcade turn the corner? Marilyn Sitzman : Yeah, they turned the corner and they started coming down. And the first thing I remember hearing are what I thought was fire crackers, because Kennedy threw his hands up, and I heard bang, bang. Now there could have been a third bang, I can't swear to that one. But I know there was two bangs very close together and I thought it was firecrackers because of his arms going in the air, and it was way off to my left, and above. So, well, stupid thing to throw a fire cracker. And as they came down, the last shot that we heard was right in front of us, and it was like the same sound. far off and to the left. But I saw his head open up and I saw the brains coming down. So by this time, of course, it knew it wasn't a fire cracker. But those were the only sounds I heard. Interviewer 1 : To clarify it a bit, that would be towards the School Book Depository Building? Marilyn Sitzman : Towards our left and above. Interviewer 2 : Which would be in the general area of the sixth floor. Marilyn Sitzman : Yes. Interviewer 1 : You didn't turn or lookin that direction? Marilyn Sitzman : No, neither one of us. Neither Mr. Zapruder or I turned ever. We kept our attention on what was happening exactly in front of us. And if you look at his film, there's very little jumping. Steady, considering what was going on. And that's why I'm saying the sound we heard, the third sound still sounded in the distance. Cause if it would been as close as everybody's trying to tell us, you know, twenty feet behind us .. Interviewer 1 : Behind the fence? Marilyn Sitzman : Yeah, we would have jumped sky high. All the shots sounded the same and Sitzman thought they came from left and from above. Later, Sitzman is asked about the possibility of a shooter behind the fence: (7:10) Interviewer 1 : What is your analysis of the possibility of a gunman, a second gunman, being behind that picket fence? Marilyn Sitzman : Well, after looking at the film and doing a lot of reading and other, et cetera, I would say there was a very good possibility there was somebody back there, but they had a silencer. I don't know who was shooting where -- but there was nobody standing behind us that close with a rifle without a silencer on it. That would have had us jumping. That film would have been bounced all over the place. Yeah, literally it would have gone right past our ears. Sitzman is then asked her immediate opinion of what had happened: (8:03) Interviewer 1 : What was your reaction immediately after the shots? Did you feel immediately that the President had been killed? Marilyn Sitzman : Yeah. I mean there was no question. I saw the brains coming down the side of his head. He was that close in front of us. I knew exactly what had happened. It's interesting that Sitzman said that they would have heard a shooter behind the fence. Note what a study of eyewitness reports concluded about a knoll shot: And that same panel concluded that even with the use of a silencer a witness would still be able to locate a grassy knoll shot . When David Green, Professor of Psychophysics at Harvard University, testified before the HSCA he said that "any rifle shot from the Knoll was quite evident. It was a very, very loud sound. You almost jumped when the rifle was fired from such a close distance. We were probably 30 to 40 feet of the muzzle blast." His study also looked at the location of witnesses and their beliefs about the origins of the shots : This chart only looks at witnesses who stood where Dr. Green 's listeners were standing during the test. Only two of the seven witnesses on the knoll thought the shots came from there. What also surprised Green was that only four people thought the shots came from two locations : Sitzman was interviewed by Deputy Sheriff John Wiseman and she said the shots came from the Texas School Book Depository (formerly the Sexton building) : Sitzman's recollections are consistent with what Abraham Zapruder saw : Previous Relevant Blog Posts on the Medical Evidence John Stringer on JFK's Wounds and his Autopsy Photographs Stringer was very clear that he took the photographs of JFK's brain.
