  • The Schlesinger Memo, Again!

Once again, Jefferson Morley discusses Arthur Schlesinger's memo on the CIA . At first Kennedy raged about “splintering the CIA into a thousand pieces and scattering it to the winds.” When he finished venting, he asked a liberal adviser, historian Arthur Schlesinger, to give him a policy paper on how to accomplish the same goal bureaucratically. Schlesinger, who had served as an intelligence officer in World War II, responded with a memo blandly titled “CIA Reorganization.” But did Kennedy rage about "splintering the CIA into a thousand pieces and scattering it to the winds." At best, we could say that the New York Times  claimed in 1966 that Kennedy had said this to a (high-ranking), (unnamed), subordinate. Morley makes it appear that Kennedy said this and then had Schlesinger write his June 1961 memo. This is just not accurate. And then Morley misquotes me: The Schlesinger memo is an origin story, the origins of the CIA’s role in the tragedy of November 22, 1963 as found in the last of the JFK files. CIA apologist Fred Litwin says this “famous memo” has already been made public. Yet, in the National Archives JFK collection, the memo is redacted as of the last public release in December 2022. If the Schlesinger memo has been declassified somewhere, Trump is obliged to release it immediately. I never said that the memo "has already been made public." And why the need to add "CIA apologist" as a descriptor. It's not the first time that Morley has claimed I am a CIA apologist. What I did say is that if you read Arthur Schlesinger's book, A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House , you'll get a pretty good idea of what is in the redacted section . You can read that segment here . In addition, if you read my article, you will see additional details from that memo in a George Lardner article from the Washington Post . Morley also says that: The Schlesinger memo is one of many origin stories of the tragedy of November 22, 1963, found in the new JFK files. What does that even mean? And the conclusion of Schlesinger's memo is not redacted. It relates more to the usurpation of the authority of the State Department rather than the authority of the President: Once again, I look forward to the release of this document, if only to stop Morley from posting about the redaction or to make it harder for him to mischaracterize the memo. • For The Sake of Our Sanity - Release the Joannides File

Jefferson Morley thinks that the personnel file of George Joannides are the smoking guns in the JFK assassination. As longtime readers of this site know, there is indeed a “smoking gun” in the JFK assassination story. That is to say, there is a single batch of records whose disclosure will radically revise popular understanding of how President Kennedy came to die. We call it the Joannides file. For those of you who are new to the JFK story, repeat and remember (and retweet) it: #TheJoannidesFile. Let me get this straight: Morley has not seen this file, but he knows that public disclosure will "radically revise popular understanding of how President Kennedy came to die." How many times do I have to blog that the ARRB examined these files in 1998 and released portions that it deemed relevant to the JFK assassination. I wrote about this back in the beginning of 2023 : It is also quite clear that the ARRB knew exactly who George Joannides was. They knew he was a covert action officer at JMWAVE and that he was the case officer for the Directorio Revolucionario Estudiantil (DRE). The ARRB also knew that he worked with the HSCA on its requests for CIA documents. ARRB staffer Michelle Combs noted that "The descriptions of his duties and accomplishments in the personnel file are very general and contain no specific reference to his relationship with the DRE. There is no mention of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the file and no information relevant to the assassination in the file." And yet, Morley is convinced that this personnel file has details of some undisclosed CIA operation involving Lee Harvey Oswald. He said this during his press conference in December 2022 : (from 57:57 to 58:50) What are they hiding? We can now answer that question with some precision. The CIA is hiding 44 documents known to exist in Joannides' personnel file that will shed light on his secret activities in 1963 and 1978. These include information about a CIA operation involving Lee Harvey Oswald that has never been disclosed. I'm not crazy about the term 'smoking gun.' I think that's a bit of a cliche -- it's not a term that investigative reporters use but I think in this case it's appropriate. What we are talking about here is not smoking gun proof of a conspiracy to kill the President. We're talking about smoking gun proof of a CIA operation involving Lee Harvey Oswald that the CIA is still concealing in 2022. This body of records has profound implications for the official story of the assassination. But how does Morley know what is in this file? He is speculating, if not imagining, what is in Joannides' personnel file, and so now we have the category of imaginary evidence. Interestingly, Morley has never discussed Michelle Combs' conclusions about the Joannides file. Morley also misleads his readers on Joannides and Oswald: The available documents show that after his agents had contact with Oswald, Joannides conducted “security reviews” of CIA covert operations in 1963-64 and that he maintained a residence in New Orleans, where Oswald lived in 1963. His agents? Joannides was in Florida and Bringuier was a lone DRE representative in New Orleans. Morley has to manufacture some sort of connection by claiming that Joannides had a summer/vacation home in New Orleans. But Bringuier never met Joannides: (page 419 in his book, Crime Without Punishment ) On her book Ms. Mellen portray me as a FBI or CIA informant and tried to associate me with George Joannides, according to her and others, as a CIA operative. I heard the name Joannides for the first time while researching some of Jefferson Morley's allegations and this was Mr. Joannides had passed away. I never met, talked or had any direct or indirect contact with Mr. George Joannides but these recyclers of lies keep repeating the same lies. And Carlos Bringuier denies that he received any money from the DRE in Miami: (page 425) I was just a Delegate in New Orleans of the DRE. I was not receiving instructions or orders from the CIA, I never received any money from the CIA, if others in the DRE at the Miami office were receiving money from the CIA that was not my case. I was working very hard as a salesman as comanager of "Casa Roca" to bring food for my family, I never received any money from the Miami DRE office or any other office of the DRE, on the contrary my delegation was sending small amounts of money to Miami headquarters. That is the historical truth. Morley used to understand this: Here is a quote from Morley's book,   Our Man in Mexico: Winston Scott and the Hidden History of the CIA : (page 175) All the former DRE leaders emphasized that they did not take orders from the CIA, and there is good reason to take them at their word. In 1963, they were passionate young anticommunists who feared their homeland was in danger of slipping under one-party control forever. They did not need a CIA man from Washington to tell them to take against against a public supporter of Castro like Oswald. In Morley's world, individuals have little agency. But they do have Central Intelligence Agency agency -- Bringuier and Oswald are just pawns of the CIA and that their actions can only be explained by an imaginary CIA operation. I do hope the CIA declassifies the rest of the Joannides' file. It's the only way to stop the incessant posts from Jefferson Morley. Actually, once the Joannides file is released, he will just keep basing his speculation on the actual documents. • My 1,000th Post

This post is the 1,000th since I started this blog at the end of September 2020. My initial plan was to post articles and reviews related to my book On the Trail of Delusion. But my blog has grown to become a full-fledged JFK conspiracy debunking site. There are many people who have helped me in this endeavor, and they deserve my thanks. Paul Hoch, a first-generation critic of the Warren Report, has provided important feedback on almost all of my posts, and on my books as well. The JFK research community owes a debt of gratitude to Paul Hoch -- his Echoes of Conspiracy newsletter offered important commentary on all the JFK assassination news, and provided an important resource on the latest documents, articles, and books. Paul's speech at the 1993 Chicago Assassination Politics Conference is still relevant today. One last word about Paul -- he is the most helpful person I know. Anybody who approaches him for help will get it. Thanks, Paul. Gus Russo has also been incredibly helpful. His files at Baylor University are a treasure trove of important material. But Gus has also supplied me with a variety of documents over the past several years, and his infectious sense of humor is well appreciated. Nick Nalli is a first-rate JFK researcher who deserves a lot more attention. His scientific analyses are simply terrific, and I will be the first in line to buy his book, should he decide to write one. Any opportunity to meet with Nick is an opportunity for me to learn something. So, thank you, Nick! Larry Haapanen actually did volunteer investigative work for Jim Garrison. He has graciously helped me with documents and with several posts. He helped me with the research for the chapter on "Farewell America" in my book, A Heritage of Nonsense: Jim Garrison's Tales of Mystery and Imagination. His insights are always valuable because Larry is a skilled historian. Steve Roe is a great researcher who is the expert on General Edwin Walker and on the Walker shooting. He's debunked a lot of conspiracy nonsense, and it was a pleasure working with Steve on the chain of custody of CE 399. Bill Brown is an expert on the Tippit shooting and you will soon see him in one of my podcasts. Always smiling, Bill fights the good battle every single day on Facebook. Frank Badalson is an admin at the Facebook group "JFK: Truth be Told." His knowledge of firearms, how police operate, and the Secret Service allow him to comment intelligently on a variety of topics. There are way too many people to thank, but here are some of the people who have been very helpful: Scott Maudsley, Dave Perry, Tracy Parnell, Robert Wagner, Don Carpenter, Jerry Dealey, Sean DeGrilla, Michel Gagne, Hideji Okina, Alecia Long, Martin Kelly, Jr., Gerald Posner, Robert Reynolds, Patrick Collins, F. Mark Zaid, Max Holland, Joe Alesi, Mark Wright, Ed Murray, John King, Stephen Fagin (and the Sixth Floor Museum) and Rex Bradford at the Mary Ferrell Foundation (which everybody should join). What's coming up: I am in the middle of writing an extensive series on how the FBI, the CIA, and the Department of Justice abandoned Clay Shaw in his time of need. I also have several audio tapes that I will be transcribing and uploading. Here are some of the blog posts that I am most proud of: Replies to Jefferson Morley Jefferson Morley's JFK Facts substack publishes a lot of material that needs debunking, and I've tried (along with Tracy Parnell) to provide a corrective. • Tucker Carlson, Again!

Journalist Matt Taibbi was a guest on Tucker Carlson's show, and stupid conspiracy theories came forward. Here is a transcript of this segment: Tucker Carlson : Frank Church, sadly, got incredibly fast-developing cancer. I noticed. Matt Taibbi : Did he? Tucker Carlson : Yes, he did. He did. Kind of like Jack Ruby-style cancer. Hugo Chavez-style cancer. It's interesting. Matt Taibbi : Huh! I did not know that. Tucker Carlson : Yeah, they couldn't treat it. He died. Sad. Um, sorry. Matt Taibbi : No, it's alright. Look, it's hard not to think -- I never thought this way until ... like, a year ago. Tucker Carlson : No, I did not think this way. I attacked anyone who did. Matt Taibbi : Right. Frank Church died of cancer three years after leaving the U. S. Senate. He had cancer in the late 1940s and underwent successful surgery. He was also a diabetic. Why would the CIA kill Church after his probe was finished and after he left the Senate. As for Hugo Chavez, well, Oliver Stone believes that the CIA may have injected cancer into his rectum. Taibbi and Carlson admit that they never thought this way. Yes, they have turned into conspiracy mongers and I think we will be seeing a lot more of this. Taibbi had Oliver Stone as a guest on his podcast in 2022. Carlson and Taibbi think that Tulsi Gabbard is going to uncover all sorts of conspiracies if she gets confirmed as head of National Intelligence: Here is a transcript of this segment: Tucker Carlson : The lengths to which permanent Washington is going to say, sabotage Tulsi Gabbard, who is an army officer, who's had a clearance for more than a decade, carries an automatic weapon. I mean, clearly we trust her with America's defense; why can't we trust her with America's secrets? Of course, we can. So, what is this? And it really is is that people are panicked that, what they have been doing, is going to come to light, I think. Matt Taibbi : Well, they should be panicked, because if you read the Executive Order on the weaponization of government, it specifically empowers the Director of National Intelligence to conduct a wide-ranging report into the possible misdeeds of the entire intelligence community. And orders her to come up with anything negative they can find. Tucker Carlson : Holy Shit! Matt Taibbi : Can you imagine? Tucker Carlson : No! No! Matt Taibbi: That's like trying to make a list of everything. Tucker Carlson : Laughs! Matt Taibbi : She'll be doing it from now till the end of time. Of course, Gabbard will find all sorts of stuff. But as we have blogged in the past, Gabbard is a conspiracy theorist who thinks Oliver Stone writes good histor y. • Exclusive: Jim Garrison tells the HSCA that Fred Crisman was one of the Three Tramps

Here is yet another tape of Jim Garrison being interviewed by the House Select Committee on Assassinations in either late July or early August 1977. Garrison spends a lot of time talking about Fred Crisman and Kerry Thornley. Here is a Word document with a transcript: Here is a .PDF file of the transcript: Garrison devotes a large part of this meeting to discussing Kerry Thornley. He is desperate to prove that Thornley met Oswald in New Orleans, and he tries to convince the HSCA that perhaps Thornley was in New Orleans more often than he admits. I believe that the Jonathan Blackmer is the HSCA investigator at this meeting, and, at times, he sounds like a conspiracy theorist. Consider this exchange early in the meeting: (7:29) HSCA : Do you have a feeling that he may have been responsible for the death of some people. Would you think he'd capable of that? Jim Garrison : I don't like to speculate. I lean over backwards in this area. But I'll tell you one thing I think, and I think that Crisman is very possibly, the third man on the grassy knoll. There has been such alteration in the photographs that by the time you see a 20th copy, like Gaeton [Fonzi] had the other day, that's an old copy. I had early copies because I was getting Al Chapman. Although I must -- Dallas, it was his idea. And that I was encouraging him to get me those photographs and other photographs from a friend of his who worked for, I think the Dallas Morning News in the morgue or something. And we were giving him something like a dollar, a piece, which is fairly outrageous. But anyway, so what Al was sending me was like second generation or something like that. And I had all five or six or whatever the whole set is. The question is about Thornley and whether "he may have been responsible for the death of some people." Even Garrison wouldn't bite with a question like that. But where does such a question come from? Garrison uses the question to morph into a discussion about Fred Crisman. And Garrison believes that Crisman is one of the three tramps. Garrison continues: (7:37) Jim Garrison : And in most of them, the third man is systematically almost, it's too often, his face is always out of the camera. They don't mind you seeing the one they call Frenchie, or they can see the cameras in front of him apparently. And they don't seem to mind, you're seeing the big, tall one, although you don't know how big he really is because if you look at it closely, he seems to be wearing two-inch elevator shoes. But the early pictures of the third man where he is clear are very good photographs of Lee Crisman. So, I just kept them here. I was looking forward when the time came that you all did come down. So, I could show you a good photograph of Lee Crisman. And I now ransacked my office about 10 times in the last month or two and every picture showing the third man is gone. I'm afraid I got careless, I locked some things up, but I really didn't think they'd be bothering my office anymore and I left them in the drawer. Suffice it to say that I've gone from a full set of the walking men to a handful of pictures of the walking men and none of which the third tramp is clearly visible. Two-inch elevator shoes? Garrison tells the HSCA that "every picture showing the third man is gone." Of course, Fred Crisman testified before the New Orleans Parish grand jury. Did Garrison confront him with the 'better' pictures? (10:25) Jim Garrison : As a matter of fact, my questions of Crisman, at the grand jury will undoubtedly center around him being in Dallas. And I cannot remember his answers because I was shocked when I saw him. In other words, he so clearly resembled a third man. You can read Crisman's testimony here. The reason that Garrison cannot remember Crisman's answers is that he was not present for his testimony. The only time he had been in Dallas was in 1963. You can read more about Garrison's preoccupation with Crisman here. Garrison even believed that Crisman was one of the assassins. The HSCA investigated Crisman and found that he was teaching in a high school in Rainier, Oregon, on November 22, 1963. Blackmer then asks a revealing question of Garrison: (12:14) HSCA : Is there anything about Banister's death that may, and Crisman’s movements around that period of time that may lead one to want to look into that a little closer? In other words, where was Crisman and what did Banister die of? Is there a problem with an autopsy or? Guy Banister did not die mysteriously. He had a heart attack. (13:44) HSCA : Now, Mary Banister made a call to some friends and said, "Guy's been shot." We know who the friends were? Jim Garrison : I can't think of their names, but I can get it. HSCA : I think that would be extremely interesting. Garrison went off and wrote a memo to Blackmer about Banister's death: Here is a transcription: Re: Deaths of Guy Banister and Clay Shaw Dear Jon: Excuse the scribble, but this is just a short note and I want to get it off without having to wait for the secretaries to return from lunch. Re: Banister The name of the couple who made the comment of interest when Mary Banister called upon learning of the death of Guy Banister , her husband, are: MR. + MRS. STEPHEN LICHTBLAU, 1631 PRATT DRIVE, NEW ORLEANS, LA. The Lichtblaus, I am informed, received an excited call to the effect that "Guy has shot himself" and Mrs. Lichtblau then went over to the scene to comfort her. My source is not clear, in her recollection, whether Mrs. Lichtblau admits having seen the wound but my source is clear that both of the Lichtblaus recall this as being what happened to Banister. They stated this verbally after his death and repeated the statement two years ago. I must emphasize that, as to me, this is hearsay. However, it is from a source which I would have to classify as reliable in her recollection -- namely, my mother-in-law, Mrs. N. P. Weinert of Lacombe, Louisiana (504) 882-7302. Her husband, N. P. Weinert, is a retired Coast Guard Commander, not given lightly to gossip and this is his general recollection of the death of Banister, as later recounted by the Lichtblaus. Since writing the preceding lines, I called Mrs. Weinert and she confirmed the incident as I have generally described it, except for one alteration: Mrs. Weinert's initial learning of Banister's death came when she received an excited call from Mrs. (Ruth Ann) Lichtblau and the latter's precise words at that time were "I just got a call from Mary Banister and Guy's been shot ." On the other hand, I have to add to the foregoing that, following Guy Banister's death, while I was still D. A., I routinely sent for a copy of the autopsy. Its conclusion, in effect, was that he had died of a heart attack (this was in the summer of 1964 - nine months after the assassination). I am in the process of getting that autopsy report for you and will forward it. I had no reason to question the veracity of the autopsy at the time and was surprised to learn, a year or so ago from my in-laws, that there existed another explanation for his death. I cite my in-laws as the source of the contravening information with a mild reluctance, not because of any unreliability on their part -- to the contrary, I regard them as highly reliable, as of the highest veracity. I would simply prefer it if somehow the source of such provocative information had come from someone unrelated to me. However, I have no residual prosecutorial interest in the outcome of any possible inquiry into this area one way or the other and am simply passing it on as it comes to me. As a former D.A. in this Parish, I personally would have to give the deciding weight to the written version of the Coroner's office. On the other hand, even as I write that point, I have to add that this was the same Coroner's office which, after David Ferrie died, leaving two suicide notes, rules that he "died of natural causes." And then, again, I suppose there is the additional possibility that because he was the former SAC of the Chicago F.B.I. office and the former Assistant Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department that there may have been a desire not to cause embarrassment to him "needlessly." That's all I know about Banister's demise -- and I'll get the autopsy report on to you as soon as I get it. One final word of caution for you, however, in the event that you decide to make further inquiries -- with regard to the Lichtblaus and Mary Banister. While they might be cooperative witnesses, they also could be hostile -- regardless of the respective realities. It is my impression that, at one time at least, they regarded me on a level with Idi Amin (or slightly below him). After all, I did for some years communicate what I regarded as Banister's connection with the assassination apparatus (publicly and in my book, H. of S.) - so that it's hardly likely that these people are inclined to go out and hold a parade, even a small one, for me. As to Mary Banister's present location; the best I can come up with is that she literally has (1) moved to Alaska, and (2) changed her name! (Let me know if you need a publicity agent some time). The Lichtblaus may know her location but the last I heard was that she split even with them. Regards, Jim Since writing the above, have finally gotten hold of the Coroner's office to see what memos, etc (date of death, at least) they may have on Clay Shaw (now buried somewhere in Kentwood Parish). One the left side of the letter, Garrison wrote: Copy of this to: L. J. Delsa, in case you want him to run down any leads. Here is the police report of Banister's death: Here is the autopsy report for Guy Banister : Here is an article from the June 8. 1964 edition of the New Orleans Times-Picayune . Garrison then goes on to discuss the two anonymous letters he received about Fred Crisman and Thomas Beckham: (14:35) Jim Garrison : Start a Crisman file with those two anonymous letters in the Beckham file. You know usually I don't like anonymous letters because when a person doesn't sign his name, but on the other hand, you've got to have a little more leeway with regard to anonymous letters in the case of John Kennedy's murder, where so many people have subsequently been killed. A lot of people that would normally sign their name won't. So I went through all letters, anonymous or otherwise, and I came up with two letters, which I eventually put in the Beckham file. You remember seeing it [crosstalk 00:15:11]. And they were full of meat, they were just too much. Nobody could make up all these. For example, perhaps it's not true that Crisman was the first person Shaw called and the first person Beckham called. And perhaps this other thing over here isn't true, but there's just too many things. The two letters were most probably written by Crisman, who was a con man. He was probably out for publicity, and Garrison took the bait. The interview of Garrison was conducted after the 1975 Rockefeller Commission investigated the possibility that E, Howard Hunt and Frank Sturgis were two of the three tramps. Garrison showed Martin one of the tramp pictures: (20:03) Jim Garrison : ... Oh, the fourth thing is that Jack Martin who's never lied to me in all the years I've known him, although he's not the most pre-possessing person, again, he's a person you get leads from and not, but don't use as evidence. I showed him this guy's picture [inaudible 00:20:43]. And if he'd ever seen him around Guy Banister’s office, he said, "I've seen him, but the only place I saw him was always at the Balter Building. HSCA : So, you're saying that Jack Martin said that he'd seen Howard Hunt in the vicinity of the Balter Building. Jim Garrison : He said something like, "That's Howard Hunt, I've seen him at the Balter Building several times.” HSCA : And this was in the Balter Building and around Banister’s office. Garrison's conversation with Jack Martin was quite recent and reflected what was in the news: (21:19) Jim Garrison : If it had been, since we've been touching everything, I would've gotten an exact statement, but that was sometime last summer or something when he came by. And I had that picture, so when a casual conversation. Because, you know, things were kind of surfacing about the background of Sturgis and Hunt being a little more substantial than we might have thought. So, he says in the Balter building, in connection with the Cubans or Banister, I don't remember which, but we'll be talking to him at great length. Garrison tells the HSCA about Kerry Thornley's father, who was a photoengraver. Garrison actually believed that he was responsible for the backyard photographs, which of course are of Thornley with Oswald's face. (25:43) Jim Garrison : Naturally, it goes without saying, that the father is, as you assume, that average American and his son is in intelligence. So, he can't go back with something that hot to his father. But you've always got to keep in mind that we see a pattern in this case of the intelligence community being made of families. So, if you don't close your door to the possibility of his father having been the original one in intelligence and the result of Kerry Thornley ending up in it, then such a thing isn't as hard to digest. I'll give you an example. I'm going into it, at the moment, I have good reason to believe that George Lyman Paine, the father of Michael Paine is in intelligence. That is very … Intelligence families are very useful for variety of reasons. That's why you can take a couple who compared to most of the people in this case, a relatively clean cut: Ruth Paine and Michael Paine. He's productive and she's relatively sensitive and intelligent. And they're both part of the intelligence community. There's intelligence everywhere. Thornley's father, Michael Paine's father, and both Michael and Ruth Paine. And then Garrison goes even further: (27:03) Jim Garrison: She [Ruth Paine] impressed me as being what you would call a Jack Kennedy Democrat yet, somehow, they're manipulated. I guess the reason they were able to manipulate them, the reason they're frozen, is not only her family, which is A.I.D. intelligence family, but also his family. His father, George Lyman Paine. His father as I suggest events may well bear out turns out to be the case agent of Lee Harvey Oswald in Los Angeles, then it's very likely that he will also turn out to be the case agent of Kerry Thornley. Garrison also went on a rant about a Harold Lloyd Varney, a conservative who gave a speech in New Orleans in November 1963. Garrison believed there was something nefarious about his speech: (33:45) Jim Garrison : Anyway, Harold Lord Varney is an important enough speaker to draw a notice in the paper. And so that's why we have to get the story about Harold Lloyd Varney's speech from the Item, afternoon edition on the 22nd and from the Picayune on the morning, because it was in both. And even when I didn't question the assassination, just thinking it was another lonely nut, that stuck in my mind. And the reason it stuck in my mind is that General Walker came all the way from Dallas, Texas to hear this man speak. In fact, they said, "General Walker in town for speech," or something like that. I got interested enough that just out of curiosity about that part, I checked where he went after he left town. I found out that shortly after the speech, he went to the airport to go up to Shreveport for some unknown reason. Jim Garrison : But what I'm getting to is if Varney, I think his speech was either patriotism or the importance of the Anglo-American tradition, blah, it's the kind of thing that, at that time he was important. His star hadn't descended. God knows who else was in attendance there. So, it occurs to me, it might be worth finding out what hotel he was speaking at, because it might have been a nice cover for some of very conservative, but otherwise distinguished Americans to have come to town for a day or so. When you read some of the Minuteman type rhetoric in the Banister collection and was little part of his file, that's almost verbatim the rhetoric that General Cabell spoke when he was a spokesman for the military warfare sector. He was really at the last from intelligence side, I guess because that they had Bay of Pigs he's getting fired. But I got interested in him enough when I dug into his getting fired and the reason, he got fired is his criticism of Kennedy as a traitor and so forth and such a connection to his brother in Dallas, to dig through his speeches in the Index of Current Periodicals, and somewhere I have a collection of Cabell’s speeches. And they're really indistinguishable from, you might say an educated Billy Ray Hargis or a lucid General Walker, is a good way to put it. But it is not far removed from General Walker. Every speech by Cabell is, “The Russians are coming. The Russians are coming." So, he wasn't just a high-class technician like you have in a case of Colby. Colby is almost a perfect technician, in the sense that I'm not sure he has any clear, as a leader of CIA any clear, conscious political commitment. He's just the ultimate technician. He really belongs to the German. Does any of this make any sense? Varney did speak in New Orleans on November 20, 1963. New Orleans Times-Picayune, November 21, 1963 Garrison tells Blackmer that "I think he's an Englishman and if he is a Lord, well, I want to take another look at Shaw’s notebook." (32:48) Because that would lead to an "ultra-conservative clique." (33:43) Varney middle name might have been Lloyd and he was not British, he was American. Towards the end of the discussion, Garrison talks more about Thornley and the fact that he might be the second Oswald. (47:47) Blackmer and Garrison then discuss the McBeath Hotel, which Garrison believes is an important clue. Supposedly both Oswald and Thornley stayed at the McBeath Hotel. (52:21) This all came from a memo written on April 22, 1969, by Andrew Sciambra that listed new leads: Did Oswald really stay there for one night in June 1959? Hard to say, but he was still in the Marines at that time. I can find no mention of this Rooming House in Kerry Thornley's grand jury testimony . But, the HSCA did talk to Barbara Reid, who was a continual source of information about the French Quarter to Garrison. Not surprising, the records of the Hotel MacBeath never showed up. Conspiracy theorist James DiEugenio ties Oswald to the MacBeath Hotel via fabulist Valentine Ashworth.

  • The Problem with JFK Conspiracy Books

A few weeks ago, I bought a Kindle version of Vince Palamara's new book, The Plot to Kill President Kennedy in Chicago and other Traces of Conspiracy Leading to the Assassination of JFK. The book is an epic failure in that it doesn't provide any evidence of a plot in Chicago. My first blog post in this series looked at Lloyd John Wilson . My second blog post in this series looked at Homer Echeverria . My third blog post in this series looked at the origins of the Chicago plot story. My fourth blog post in this series looked at Palamara's first eight supposed pieces of corroborating evidence for a Chicago plot. My fifth blog post in this series looked at Palamara's second eight supposed pieces of corroborating evidence for a Chicago plot. A Reply to Vince Palamara But Palamara's book also suffers from its tendency to repeat conspiracy stories from other JFK conspiracy books. For instance, he repeats the Rose Cherami story and the Richard Case Nagell story without really understanding the underlying primary documents. Vince Palamara on Richard Case Nagell Vince Palamara on Rose Cherami Here is Vince's reply to my posts on Cherami and Nagell: This is not the first time that Palamara has written about Richard Case Nagell. In his book, Honest Answers about the Murder of President John F. Kennedy , Palamara believes that Nagell's "assassination prediction" is one of the smoking guns that proves conspiracy. Palamara "merely followed" DiEugenio and others. And that's the problem. Instead of actually researching Cherami or Nagell, Palamara relies upon others. And guess what? So do people like James DiEugenio. If you check his book, Destiny Betrayed , you will find that 21 of his 32 footnotes on Richard Case Nagell are from Dick Russell's book. A few of his other footnotes are to Jim Garrison's papers. The same holds true for James Douglass's JFK and the Unspeakable . All of his material on Richard Case Nagell comes from Russell. He even repeats Russell’s claim that there was something suspicious about Nagell’s death: (page 157) Russell asked an investigator for the Los Angeles coroner, Gary Kellerman, if a heart attack could be induced. Kellerman said it was indeed possible to kill in such a way, while leaving no clues: “I’m not sure what chemical you have to use, but I’ve heard of it,” he said. “From what I understand, it’s a chemical that gets into the system and then it’s gone. You can’t find it.” Douglass does not mention that Nagell was a lifelong smoker, nor does he mention Nagell’s forensic autopsy. Not surprisingly, he also does not discuss Nagell’s plane crash or any of his mental health issues. The Nagell section in Jim Marrs' book, Crossfire , also comes from Dick Russell's article in Gallery Magazine and his book, The Man Who Knew Too Much . Marrs even believes the Nagell story that he sent a letter to J. Edgar Hoover before the assassination warning of the plot. But Marrs ignores this letter that Nagell sent to Richard Russell in 1967: Nagell tells Russell that "One purpose in communicating with you at this time is to advise that I am no longer certain the letter I dispatched to the Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation, in September 1963 was sent via postal registry, or, for that matter, even mailed." He's not even sure if he mailed his letter? You won't see that in JFK conspiracy books. And here is one thing you won't see in any JFK conspiracy book when it comes to Nagell. The court decision in 1982 to grant Nagell full disability from the time of his injury in 1954. Here is a short excerpt: Plaintiff’s brain syndrome has been manifested by severe personality and behavioral disturbances. They took the form, over the years since the airplane crash, of suicidal preoccupation, deliriousness, restlessness, and violence, paranoid trends and passive-aggressive behavior, hysteria, psychotic states, severe headaches, dizziness, confusion, impaired judgment, confabulations, and delusional formulations, anosognosia or Anton’s disease. Plaintiff attempted suicide in 1962 by shooting himself, and according to Dr. Weinstein in 1963, when he tried to slash his wrists after this arrest, and in 1964, when he took a drug overdose. Dr. Weinstein described plaintiff’s suicidal behavior too, immediately after the 1954 plane crash. Plaintiff has been in various mental institutions and psychiatric wards almost a dozen times between 1955 and 1969. The evidence is unhappily abundant of likely confabulations, or fictitious stories told by plaintiff with no awareness of their falsity. One example surrounds plaintiff’s attempted suicide in 1962. He has variously suggested that he shot himself (the most likely), that his wife shot him, and that it was an unknown assailant. Stories told by plaintiff throughout the years after his discharge involve work for the CIA and, alternatively, persecution by the CIA. He has suggested that the bank shooting incident in 1963 involved undercover CIA activities, that he had dealings with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to the Kennedy assassination as part of an undercover CIA assignment, and also that he sought by the shooting to be taken into protective custody because he felt his life threatened by the CIA. These stories are unsubstantiated and are likely confabulations, continuing symptoms of plaintiff’s brain injury. Relying on Dick Russell for the Nagell story is like relying on Richard Nixon for the Watergate story. And yet book and after book quotes from Russell and I am sure there will be no shortage of new books that take the Nagell story from The Man Who Knew Too Much . For the complete story on Richard Case Nagell, please read my new book, A Heritage of Nonsense: Jim Garrison's Tales of Mystery and Imagination , which has a chapter on Richard Case Nagell. • Eugene Dinkin and Vince Palamara

Another conspiracy theorist who loves the Eugene Dinkin story is Vince Palamara. So much so that he has included it in three different books. First, here is an excerpt from Vince's book Survivor's Guilt: The Secret Service and the Failure to Protect President Kennedy : (page 64) Palamara's sources are Warren Commission document 943 , Dick Russell's book, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Noel Twyman's book, Bloody Treason . Vince included a longer segment in his 2021 book Honest Answers About the Murder of President John F. Kennedy : A New Look at the JFK Assassination : Palamara went back to the well one more time for his 2024 book, The Plot to Kill President Kennedy in Chicago: And the Other Traces of Conspiracy Leading to the Assassination of JFK : (page 94 in the Kindle edition) Eugene Dinkin 18 was an Army Cryptographer (an NSA codebreaker) stationed in France who intercepted two secret military codes (one in mid-October 1963 and the other on 11/2/63) about a specific plot to kill Kennedy which was to occur on 11/28/63 and was to be blamed on a Communist or a Negro who would be designated as the assassin. Based on this alarming information, Dinkin wrote a letter to RFK before the assassination but heard nothing back in response. Alarmingly, a declassified CIA document places intelligence operative/assassin Jean Souetre “in Fort Worth on the morning of November 22 and in Dallas in the afternoon,” exactly where JFK was at those times. This mortal threat to French President Charles DeGaulle was “expelled from the U. S. at Fort Worth or Dallas eighteen hours after the assassination,” according to this document. 19 Footnote 18 reads as follows: They Killed Our President: 63 Reasons to Believe There was a Conspiracy to Assassinate JFK by Jesse Ventura (2013), pages 297 - 300; Bloody Treason by Noel Twyman (1997), pages 522 - 531. Footnote 19 reads as follows: See also https://www.archives.gov/files/research/jfk/releases/2018/104-10185-10009.pdf . That is a 1962 document which does not mention Dinkin. Where on earth did Palamara get his information that Dinkin intercepted military codes in October 1963, and in early November 1963? There are no primary documents which mention this, and Dinkin specifically told the HSCA that he did not intercept any cables related to the JFK assassination . It appears that he got it from Jesse Ventura's 2014 book, They Killed Our President: 63 Reasons to Believe There was a Conspiracy to Assassinate JFK , which is listed as one of his sources on Dinkin. Yes, Vince Palamara thinks Jesse Ventura is a proper source for JFK information. Here is the relevant segment from Ventura's book: (page 298 in the Kindle edition) Dinkin’s duties were deciphering and analyzing cable traffic messages in Western Europe, i.e. a code-breaker for the NSA (National Security Agency). In that capacity, Dinkin monitored the cable traffic in relation to the French OAS (Secret Army Organization, a radical group intent on the overthrow of France’s government), especially insofar as their attempts to assassinate French President Charles De Gaulle. Dinkin intercepted two messages, in mid-October and on November 2, 1963, announcing the assassination of John F. Kennedy. On the basis of the cable traffic he intercepted and was able to interpret, Dinkin mailed a letter to Robert Kennedy on October 22, 1963, stating that: An attempt will be made to assassinate President Kennedy on November 28, 1963, and its blame will be placed on a Communist or Negro, who will be designated as the President’s assassin. Ventura's footnotes all go back to Dick Russell's book, The Man Who Knew Too Much . However, Russell's book does not make the claim that Dinkin intercepted two messages. But what makes it really weird is that Ventura wrote his book "with Dick Russell." And so Russell clearly must have seen these claims about Dinkin. And he let them pass. So , did Ventura just make this up? But wait, there's more! Jesse Ventura has the final kicker: (page 299 in the Kindle edition) Tosh Plumlee confirmed he believes it was Dinkin's message that was the intelligence actually responsible for sending the Military intelligence abort team mission into Dallas on November 22: It was because of Dinkin's info on November 8, 1963, that the Military Intelligence Abort Team was sent to Dallas to abort the hit. Ventura's footnote for this: Robert Plumlee, Email to author, May 18, 2013. Plumlee's fanciful tale is that he flew John Roselli and E. Howard Hunt from Florida to New Orleans to Dallas on November 22, 1963 to be part of a team to abort the assassination. This story was featured in Rob Reiner's podcast series, Who Killed JFK? • Don't Hold Your Breath about the Release of JFK Documents!

Conspiracy theorists are wetting their pants in anticipation of Trump's release of JFK documents. They are going to be sadly disappointed -- the 3,000 or so documents that still have redactions are not directly related to the JFK assassination. When these redactions are released, we might learn a little more about the Cold War, but there won't be any revelations about the assassination itself. The real expert on JFK documents is Robert Reynolds and his new article on the documents is a must-read . So, don't hold your breath: Now wait a minute! What about all those “secret documents” withheld from the public, which have appeared again and again in news reports and on internet blogs? For the nth time: there aren’t any. Except for whole page redactions (now limited to only about 60 records), redactions hold back only words and phrases, names, places, and numbers. You can access a lot of interesting documents that support Robert's article here. Don't miss my interview with Robert Reynolds .

  • Eugene Dinkin and James DiEugenio

It's quite surprising that the Eugene Dinkin story is still being promoted by various conspiracy theorists. I would have thought that his submissions to the HSCA would have been enough to scare people away. Unfortunately, that's not the case. James DiEugenio has featured three articles written by Ronald Redmon on Eugene Dinkin -- here , here , and here . In his first article, Redmon thinks there is something nefarious about the way Dinkin was treated by the Warren Commission and the HSCA : So who is Eugene B. Dinkin and what exactly did he do involving the assassination of President Kennedy? Dinkin was a young American soldier who was serving in the United States Army in 1963. If he is a hero, and this author thinks he is, why have we not heard about him? One reason is this: the Warren Commission hid his name and the information he had gathered in an attempt to warn the President about a plot prior to November 22, 1963. Fifteen years later, he tried to get his information to the House Select Committee on Assassination to help solve the crime, but they also hid this information. Nobody hid his story. The Warren Commission had two documents about Dinkin - CD 788 , and CD 943 . CD 943 was not released because the CIA's reporting involved "sensitive sources and methods," CD 788 was an FBI document and was released much earlier. In fact, Dick Russell showed Dinkin the FBI document in 1975. The HSCA also did not hide their information on Dinkin. Unfortunately, the House never passed a law to release HSCA documents and so it was up to the ARRB to release Dinkin's submissions. The important point is that both the Warren Commission and the HSCA realized there was nothing to his story. Dinkin had no relevant information on the assassination and his so-called "psychological sets" were just plain nonsense. His guess that an assassination would take place was just as important as Jeane Dixon's prediction that the Democrat winner of the 1960 election would be assassinated. Redmon clearly believes that Dinkin's story deserved some sort of follow-up: So far in my ongoing research, I have found no indication that the FBI did anything that was called for to either corroborate Dinkin's story or refute it. Even Jim Garrison didn't believe the Dinkin lead was worth following up. An investigator for Jim Garrison found Dinkin in 1968 and nothing happened. Jim Garrison didn't even think it was worth mentioning Dinkin in either of his two books on the JFK assassination. Redmon obtained a copy of Dinkin's HSCA submission of 23 "demonstrations." He only describes demonstration #2 -- without any providing any of Dinkin's illustrations. But here is his description: Demonstration 2, for instance, is comprised of photos from the October 15, 1963 and October 18, 1963 editions of Stars and Stripes . The headline on the October 15th story is “Prospective Bosses Fire Jack With Enthusiasm”. The photo attached to the story is of Jack Pierce, an unemployed California man who has been fired 73 times. The man in the photo has a vague resemblance to Oswald. President Kennedy was often referred to as Jack, so the headline could be processed to mean getting rid of Jack Kennedy. The California man’s name reinforces this subliminal message: pierce Jack -with a bullet. The October 18th story includes a picture of an Army specialist named Clinton Pierce. This photo of Pierce has a vague resemblance to Oswald. Pierce’s job is operating heavy equipment, and the story is about his toy collecting hobby. The caption under his photo is, “so who needs a Jack?” This again could be taken to mean Jack is unnecessary and can be gotten rid of. The last name of the Army specialist is “Pierce”, again a reference to putting a hole in something. Here is the article from the Stars and Stripes : You can see Dinkin's description of this demonstration here . Does any of this make any sense? Any reference to Lee Harvey Oswald dates the "demonstration" to after the assassination. Redmon finds this technique compelling: The other demonstrations include a number of different types of psychological sets that create a variety of assassination related images in the mind of the reader/viewer. In researching the murder of President Kennedy I have found a number of examples similar to those that Dinkin discovered. So, Dinkin's 23 "demonstrations' aren't enough! Here is an example of what Redmon found: The July 2, 1963 edition of Look Magazi ne has a caption in the upper right-hand corner of the cover page that reads, “Why Kennedy’s in Trouble”. The caption is written in red, the color of blood. The main part of the Look cover is of Pope John kneeling in prayer. The caption and the Pope taken together could suggest the Pope praying at a funeral mass. The title of the story inside, “Why there is trouble on the New Frontier”, has the words “New Frontier” also in blood red. The story itself was critical of many of the President’s decisions on a variety of issues. JFK when first elected was likened to a new Adam, but the article focuses on the New Frontier’s lack of success in getting domestic programs passed, which suggests the fall of Adam. The article included phrases like “a dark breeze blowing through the Washington political community,” “the bloodstained frontier,” “woes descended on the head of the President,” and “White House unfurled the white flag,” suggesting the fall of the new Adam. Here is the cover of the Look Magazine referenced above: For the life of me, I don't understand why Redmon finds any of this convincing. Despite the fact that Redmon quotes the Dinkin letter to the HSCA stating that he had never deciphered any messages related to the JFK assassination, Redmon concludes that his "demonstrations" are just a cover story: Russell writes that some of the military associates Garrison’s investigators talked to told the DA that while he was hospitalized, Dinkin was made to recite a cover story. This may be because when Garrison dug deeper into Dinkin he discovered that one of his functions as a code breaker was to decipher messages from the French OAS. (Dick Russell, The Man Who Knew too Much , Second Edition, p. 352) Which is interesting, since the OAS despised Kennedy for his alliance with Charles DeGaulle against their efforts to overthrow the French leader, and also Kennedy’s early advocacy for independence for the French colony of Algeria, which they violently resisted. As Henry Hurt later discovered, a member of the OAS (Secret Army Organization) was in Fort Worth the morning of the assassination, and in Dallas that afternoon. He was picked up within 48 hours and expelled back to France. (Hurt, Reasonable Doubt , pp. 414-19) Redmon quotes Russell who did indeed write that "Dinkin's name first came up in the Garrison investigation, wherein interviews with some of Dinkin's former Army associates led to the conclusion that he had been hospitalized until he memorized a cover story." (page 557) But I see no evidence that this is true. Boxley did talk to Dinkin and Garrison did receive a letter from a colleague of Dinkin's which talked about Dinkin's paranoia. It was Boxley who said that this was all a cover story, and there are no interviews with Dinkin's associates in Garrison's files. And there is no evidence to back up the allegation that Dinkin's job was to decipher messages from the French OAS. Dinkin never said that to Russell -- once again it was inferred by Boxley. Of course, this all just a theory: This, of course, is only a theory. But it remains such because neither the FBI, nor the Warren Commission, ever investigated the Dinkin case. And there is no evidence that the HSCA, even though they knew he was alive, ever tried to interview him. Even though it was a fact that he predicted Kennedy’s assassination well in advance of his murder. If that was not an important lead, then what was? Such was the quality of the inquiries into the JFK assassination. Of course, the HSCA never tried to interview Dinkin. Any thinking person receiving Dinkin's 23 "demonstrations" would realize he was not worth talking to. Redmon's second article on Dinkin was about his death in 2012, and his third article discussed a few more of Dinkin's "psychological sets." One psych-set demo Dinkin found that had an implied threat to the president was in the July 2, 1963, edition of Look Magazine . The title of an article inside was, “Why Kennedy’s in Trouble”. The title was inside a black border, but the print title was colored blood red. The article inside the magazine referred to President Kennedy as a new Adam. The analogy would be that Kennedy, like Adam being kicked out of Eden, would be kicked out of his place, the White House. The inside title, “Why There’s Trouble in the New Frontier” is partly colored blood red. A second example Dinkin deemed significant was from July 5, 1963 edition of Life Magazine . In it, there is a photo of President Kennedy riding in a motorcade in Germany. JFK is standing in the limousine looking back and to the side. There is a dark spot/defect on the back of his head that looks like a chunk of his scalp is missing. Inside this edition there are pictures of the president’s visit to Ireland. In one of the photos, there is a gravestone with the name John Kennedy on it. But are these Dinkin's sets or Redmon's? In his first article, he clearly stated that the Look Magazine example from July 2, 1963, was something he came up with. The other examples above are not in Dinkin's submission to the HSCA. It doesn't really matter. It's all nonsense. Coming up in our last instalment on Eugene Dinkin: Vince Palamara writes about Dinkin in several of his books. • Eugene Dinkin Meets with Dick Russell

Author Dick Russell met with Eugene Dinkin in December of 1975 at the cafeteria of the Art Students League in New York City. Ten days later, he met Dinkin again at Grand Central Station. Russell wrote up a 7 1/2-page report which I found in his papers at Baylor University. Here is a summary of Russell's report. Because of copyright, I don't think I can post the whole interview, much as I would like to. Dinkin brought a scrapbook of clippings to the meeting and talked about "subliminal gestalt semantic techniques." It's not an Oct. 22 photo -- it's a November 22nd photo, and it's Trotsky, not Lenin. Here it is, once again: (see Demonstration #6) Dinkin continues with his clippings: Dinkin brought up Robert Lee Woodard. I can't find the exact article he was referencing, but here is one that gives you an idea: Oakland Tribute, November 6, 1963 Later in the interview, Dinkin discusses Woodard: Clearly Dinkin has been influenced by JFK conspiracy books. Dinkin then explains his overall theory: Dinkin was easily influenced. T here was lots of talk about American involvement with the OAS to assassinate de Gaulle . But there was nothing to it, and they were right to tell Dinkin that this was communist propaganda. Dinkin tells Russell that the other man with him trying to warn about a supposed plot was another private, Dennis De Witt. He also says that he never changed the supposed date of the assassination from November 28th to November 22nd: I called the 28th because I speculated that the military wanted to turn the tide in this nation and Thanksgiving was a salient way to put the blame on atheistic communism. Of course Dinkin "speculated." Dinkin tells Russell that he lied to the FBI and that he told them his papers were with a friend in Amsterdam, "I don't know where they got the idea my papers were stolen. I suppose that's in there to give it a whole paranoid flavor." Dinkin then talks about his time at Walter Reed Hospital: Dinkin tell Russell about his college courses: I studied psychology at the University of Illinois, at seminar courses Univ Chicago. Also fascinated by media's ability to directly impinge on the subconscious mind, induce fears and ideas which would find validity in subsequent events. He also claims that he was in the NSA: Dinkin operated a cryptographic machine. He was not a cryptographer. I don't know if I believe his claim that it "automatically" put him in the NSA. In any case, he told the HSCA that he never saw any intercepted messages about the assassination. Dinkin then brings up his interpretation of a map ( see the first section of this post ) Yes, "only schizos see things like this." Dinkin bring up something very telling, and Russell types this as a direct quote: I think it was about July - August 1963, when I first started seeing that face (Oswald). Dinkin was certain that the government was after him: For years, everything I've done at work resulted in a hullaboloo. I think the government has given information to state civil service that I was some sort of dangerous character. I do have a certain violent flare, fistfights in streets, in army put a sergeant in the hospital. But I'm not a hoodlum and generally on the side of the law. I've a hunch the government wanted to discredit me recently. I was fired in March, am unemployed, can't find a job or even get compensation. Dinkin actually worked in the mental health field but was fired in 1975 by the New York State Department of Hygiene's South Beach Psychiatric Center. A future post will examine his termination from that job. The government was still trying to intimidate Dinkin: By the way, Dinkin lived in Brooklyn Heights for a while -- one block away from where I used to live in 1985. Dinkin then went into a diatribe about Oswald and his rifle: He then wondered, "I find it interesting the W. Commission never explained how Oswald got that scar on his forehead. It appears on different sides in different photos." Some of the stuff in the interview is just plain hard to understand: "Photos doctored to show how personality can be transferred by ideology"? What? I guess some of this paragraph relates to a second Oswald. Ten days later Russell met Dinkin again at Grand Central Station in New York and "more evidence" was produced. Russell adds a note: "Oct. 27 -- face up, gaping mouth photo." I can't decipher this. Dinkin's reference to Guy Patterson comes from this article: Aberdeen American News, November 29, 1963 Dinkin linked Patterson with the death of Edward Kennedy: Here is the picture of Rodosovich that Dinkin refers to: Cincinnati Post and Times Star, September 19, 1964 Those are the highlights from Russell's two meetings with Dinkin. How on earth could Russell have been impressed with any of this. And yet Dick Russell wrote five pages about Dinkin in his 1992 book The Man Who Knew Too Much . (pages 552 - 557) Russell makes it very clear in his book that he believes Dinkin, just as he believed Richard Case Nagell : (pages 552 - 553) It is staggering to consider how many warnings the FBI received that something dire was being planned for President Kennedy. Besides the Milteer case, informants had revealed threats from Carlos Marcello and Santos Trafficante, Jr. Garrett Trapnell had volunteered an account of a Cuban-related plot. And Richard Case Nagell had provided enough information, so he figured, to warrant the arrest of Oswald, Angel, and Leopoldo. Nor was the FBI the only government agency alerted. Through Nagell at least, so was the CIA. And, through an Army private first class stationed in 1963 in Metz, France, so was the Pentagon. Russell notes a further similarity to Nagell: (page 553) We saw, in Nagell's case in the Far East, how a psychiatric evaluation and removal from classified duties followed close upon his having decided to reveal certain clandestine military activities that his superior officers wanted kept quiet. With Private Dinkin, we may be looking at a similar situation -- and a far more frightening one. I've written extensively about Richard Case Nagell and there is no evidence that he mentioned anything about the JFK assassination or Lee Harvey Oswald before Kennedy was murdered . Russell makes a big deal out the memo that Richard Helms wrote to J. Lee Rankin . (CD 943) In other words, someone with the CIA was aware, as least "immediately after the assassination," that Dinkin had made such "allegations" two weeks prior. But Russell doesn't tell his readers how Dinkin came to his conclusion and says nothing about Dinkin's "psychological sets." And Russell gives us a hint that Dinkin is a bit loony : The message that Army code-breaker Eugene Dinkin tried to send in a variety of European capitals in October-November 1963 is the strongest, if most bizarre, indication of a possible high-level military role in the assassination. Russell believes that Dinkin's "psychological sets" is just a cover story: Dinkin's name first came up in the Garrison investigation, wherein interviews with some of Dinkin's former Army associates led to the conclusion that he had been hospitalized until he memorized a cover story. By the time he filed his lawsuit in 1975, Dinkin was maintaining that he had somehow discerned images in news photographs that led him to the advance conclusions he once drew about the Kennedy assassination. As Garrison's people pierced the story together, however, one of Dinkin's duties as code breaker had been to decipher telegraphic traffic that originated with the French OAS. Russell provides a footnote for the last statement about the OAS -- and that is the meeting Garrison held with his investigators in New Orleans in September of 1968. But Dinkin never said anything about deciphering traffic -- it was Boxley who inferred that Dinkin was telling him a cover story. Here is what Dinkin told the HSCA : I never decoded any illicit cryptographic message which in any way appeared to relate to the JFK assassination. Now, to be fair, Russell did not have access to Dinkin's submissions to the HSCA. But he interviewed him in person , and, according to Russell's detailed notes, Dinkins never said he intercepted any traffic. Russell refers to his first-hand knowledge in his footnotes which should have convinced him that Dinkin was not of sound mind. His information only came from his "psychological sets." For some reason, the Dinkin story lives on. Coming in part six - James DiEugenio publishes three articles about Eugene Dinkin. • Eugene Dinkin's Submissions to the HSCA

At the end of December 1976, Eugene Dinkin sent some material to the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA). Here is the draft of their letter to Dinkin acknowledging his material: (the material in this post comes from unpublished files of the HSCA) Here are the attachments that Dinkin sent to the HSCA. There is no explanation. Clearly Dinkin felt that the gesturing of Lt. Col. Harold Dye over a "fictitious 'Colonel Done'" related to the assassination. Dinkin did tell Dick Russell in 1975 that "Operation Big Lift, all these troops flown over to Europe, seemed very strange. I felt it was like an attack force ready for something. Strange things happening. Naval guys appearing at military bases. Something secretive going on. A training pamphlet distributed all thru European command October - Dept of Defense about understanding enemy propaganda. Denied split between Russia & China, indicated one vast propaganda network thruout the world and main theme somehow triggered Moscow. This was distributed on vast scale thru every level of command, seemed almost like Birch Society pamphlet. How would the military, after the General Walker situation, dared put out anything contradictory to the American president? They would only take that risk if Kennedy wouldn't be around." A further clue to these attachments can be found in another letter that Dinkin sent to the HSCA in May of 1977: Here we see Dinkin's cryptographic skills in decoding a message from the Stars and Stripes newspaper article in the first photograph above (with the Colonel Done) What this means is beyond my comprehension. On February 23, 1977, Dinkin wrote again to the HSCA with detailed examples of his proofs: Dinkin included the following article excerpts: Here are Dinkin's "demonstrations." Each demonstration is followed by the evidence supplied by Dinkin. Here is a clear photograph of Kennedy at Love Field: This proof was also included in Dinkin's lawsuit against the Defense Department and the CIA . Here is a better copy of CE 751 : On March 10, 1977, Dinkin wrote again to the HSCA: The most important part of Dinkin's letter is his last sentence: I never decoded any illicit cryptographic message which in any way appeared to relate to the JFK assassination. Blakey did send a form-letter reply to Dinkin. It's not surprising that Dinkin is not mentioned in the HSCA Final Report, or in the published HSCA volumes. After seeing all this material, I still wonder exactly what articles and photographs convinced him that JFK was going to be assassinated. A lot of the material above is from exhibits or articles from after the assassination. We know that Dinkin was watching the John Birch Society intently, and so perhaps he paid a lot of attention to Adlai Stevenson's trip to Dallas in October 1963. Perhaps Operation Big Lift put him over the edge. He certainly reminds me of Jack Ruby who interpreted the black border of the Bernard Weissman ad in the Dallas Morning News : The reason I have posted all of Dinkin's ridiculous "demonstrations" is because conspiracy theorists like James DiEugenio and Vince Palamara are still writing about Dinkin and take his story seriously.
