  • JFK's Autopsy Photographs are Authentic

The Boston Globe published an article in June 1981 about the Parkland doctors and their opinions of the autopsy photographs. Their statements were all over the board which was indicative of the confusion when JFK was treated. What most people missed is that the Kennedy family gave permission to the Boston Globe to examine the autopsy materials and they hired a professional committee to determine if they were authentic. Boston Globe, June 21, 1981 The panel listened to Robert Groden's theory about the alteration of the autopsy photographs but they unanimously rejected his 'evidence,' and validating the HSCA's findings that the autopsy materials were authentic . Here is the section from the HSCA's photographic panel on the authenticity of the autopsy materials. • Update on the Heath Memo

Historian Larry Haapanen has done a fair bit of research on the Heath Memo , providing important context which is not visible in the memo itself (or in Jefferson Morley's analysis). Larry notes that the 1976 Church Committee Report on the Performance of the Intelligence Agencies, said that the Miami Station failed to fully utilize its capabilities to gather information possibly related to the JFK assassination. SAS = Special Affairs Staff, a group within the CIA responsible for Cuban matters. CIA officers, including the IG's office, took note of this criticism.  Larry notes that while it's impossible to know what was in Heath's mind when he wrote his memo, it might have been part of an effort to shore up Ted Shackley's standing in the Agency by describing a more robust response by JMWAVE after the assassination, or to distance himself from the criticism in the Schweiker-Hart report. The JMWAVE Chief of Station was Theodore Shackley. From May 1976 to December 1977, Shackley was the CIA's Associate Deputy Director of Operations, which was the No. 2 position in clandestine affairs. In late 1977, Ted Shackley was relieved of his job by President Carter in an effort to dismantle Cold War spy networks, and he retired from the CIA in 1979. Here is a note from Scott Breckinridge to John L. Leader (JLL), who both worked in the CIA Inspector-General's office, about a conversation between Breckinridge and Shackley : Shackley tried to explain that "he had no access to the sort of people that Schweiker wanted, i.e., those few who would have known (if Castro had a plot) about assassination plans." Here is a link to Shackley's testimony before the Church Committee. Here is a memo that presents some of the CIA's response to the 1976 Church Committee report mentioned above . The text reads as follows: This does not mean that such assets (CIA sources in Cuba) as there were did not have reporting requirements levied on them, in fact, there was considerable activity in this respect. In the course of the present review a number of case officers at the Station (JMWAVE) during that period have described the frenetic activity in this respect. The characterization by the Chief of Station as to passive collection by CIA inside the United States should not be extended to apply to what was done with reporting assets outside the United States as the SSC Final Report attempts to do at the bottom of page 58. It does appear that a lot of the effort by JMWAVE related to Cuba as opposed to anti-Castro Cubans. This might have reflected the fact that most anti-Castro Cubans were sure that Castro was behind the assassination. After Shackley was relieved, Don Heath wrote a second memo about the JFK assassination : Here is a handwritten note about what five case officers said about investigating the assassination . Robert Wall does not recall any requirements; Jack Barry did support Heath; Evalena Vidal said there might have been a request, and Tom Clines does not remember. The CIA actually reviewed files to see what information was gleaned from Heath's requirements : All of the case officers were asked about requirements for investigation : Here is Evalena Vidal's memo on this topic : Here is Jack Barry's memo : And here is Robert Wall's report : It is important to note that Evalena Vidal was asked by the JFK Assassination Task Force if she knew of any requirements to investigate. She was also asked to provide written comments for the Inspector General's office. She remembered that her assets "generally speculated that it was a Soviet plot, perhaps partially in retaliation for Kennedy's strong stand on the Cuban missile crisis and the Soviets' consequent loss of face." John Barry wrote that "all the reports I remember receiving were negative ones indicating no previous knowledge of the assassination plot or of the individuals that had been connected to the assassination at the time." He concluded that the Station did not develop "any information of a positive nature regarding the President's assassination." If Jefferson Morley and Rep. Luna's Task Force are interested in more SITREPS, they can start by searching all of the JMWAVE cables. Here's one of interest : Given that JMWAVE was started to help with Operation Mongoose and to oppose Fidel Castro's Cuba, it would be not surprising if most of its anti-Cuban assets would have felt that Castro was behind the assassination. If there was no conspiracy, as I believe, than these assets would have nothing to tell them but rumors and feelings. The Heath memos do not prove that the CIA repudiated the lone-assassin theory nor do they prove that the CIA gathered and suppressed evidence of a plot. Larry Haapanen supplied most of the research for this article. Paul Hoch helped edit the article and provided some important comments. Thank you, Larry and Paul. • In Search of the Oswald Operation, Part Five

Jefferson Morley claims that CIA eyes were on Oswald in New Orleans . Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (49:55) Jefferson Morley : Another document that we requested, a roster of paramilitary assets. We did get that list, and we're analyzing it. What's important to understand here is that when Lee Harvey Oswald was in New Orleans in the summer of 1963, he was in contact, and in view of, dealing with multiple people with CIA contacts and CIA code names even, and in fact, one of the documents that emerged this week, and a JFK researcher sent me, was the personnel file of a man named Agustin Guitart, and this is one of the documents that also gives me new confidence in talking about the responsibility of the CIA in the assassination. Agustin Guitart was a professor at a University in New Orleans. A file, as it was in its redacted form, showed that in 1963, he was conveying information from his brother who lived in Cuba. But a lot of the file was classified, and was redacted, we couldn't see it. When some of those redactions came off, we learned that Agustin Guitart had another role for the CIA, and that was spying on pro-Castro forces in New Orleans. Not only that, we know that Agustin Guitart was in the courtroom when Oswald was arrested for disturbing the peace with other Cubans. So a CIA asset charged or responsible, deployed, recruited for spying on pro-Castro forces in New Orleans was in the courtroom with a man named Lee Harvey Oswald three months before the assassination. So again we see Oswald under CIA eyes. That's what these new records tell us. Oswald is under CIA eyes constantly from November 1959 to November 1963. Agustin Guitart, 1910 - 1991 Here is the new unredacted CIA document on Agustin Guitart . The CIA did have an interested in Dr. Guitart, but I don't see any indication that he was spying was "charged or responsible, deployed, recruited for spying on pro-Castro forces in New Orleans." Here is a memo for the CIA's contact division which indicates their interest: Here is an internal request to use Guitart : Here is a report of an interview with Guitart: The CIA wanted Dr. Guitart to recruit his uncle to get some information. Here is a letter from Guitart's case officer: The name Oswald does not appear in Guitart's 201 file. Yes, Guitart was in the courtroom when the charge against Oswald for disturbing the peace came up for consideration (as we have known since the days of the Warren Commission . But there was a credible, non-CIA-driven reason for his being there -- to support his friend Carlos Bringuier. Hardly a basis for "Oswald is under CIA eyes constantly from November 1959 to November 1963" much less "new confidence in talking about the responsibility of the CIA for the assassination." The HSCA reviewed Guitart's CIA file, and summarized it; nothing about spying on pro-Castro Cubans: Guitart was mentioned briefly in Volume X of the HSCA Appendix Volumes: Once again, Morley over-reaches and makes unwarranted conclusions. Bonus Content Here is Guitart's statement to the Garrison investigation: Garrison had a pretty big interest in Guitart. In 1967, Guitart moved to Louisiana Avenue Parkway, which was the same street where David Ferrie lived . As you may know, propinquity played a big role inn Garrison's investigative skills. Here are the notes of an interview that Harold Weisberg conducted with Agustin Guitart : Previous Relevant Blog Posts on Jefferson Morley In Search of an Oswald Operation, Part Four Morley claims that there is some connection between the suicides of Gary Underhill, Charles Thomas, George de Mohrenschildt, and the overdose death of Dorothy Kilgallen. • In Search of the Oswald Operation, Part Four

Jefferson Morley believes that there are mysterious deaths related to the JFK assassination. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (46:18) Jefferson Morley : The important thing about AMWORLD is it was the home of assassination operations, and it was known to one of the other figures who have emerged in this week's disclosure. I'm referring to a man named Garrett Underhill. This is one of the stories that's attracted a lot of attention on social media. Garrett Underhill was a arms dealer who worked with and was familiar with the personnel who worked on the AMWORLD project. He probably didn't know the cryptonym AMWORLD, but he was friends and colleagues with the men who did run that program. What Garrett Underhill did was keep track of arms sales. He was an arms dealer, and that was his world -- big shipments of weapons for CIA assisted forces and all over the world. Garrett Underhill said, was very disturbed by the President's assassination. He told associates, this is reflected in one of the documents that was released last week, and said that the CIA was, a small group of CIA officials were responsible for Kennedy's assassination. So when Garrett Underhill later committed suicide, and so we don't have further basis for knowing why he did that, people speculate about his suicide, and it is curious that this is an all too familiar tale for those of us who study the JFK assassination. Somebody learns something disturbing about the assassination, talks about coming forward with it, is bothered by it, and then commits suicide. And that's what happened with Gary Underhill. And we have similar stories from Dorothy Kilgallen, a journalist who committed suicide in 1965, who was interested in the JFK story and pursuing it. Charles Thomas, a State Department official in Mexico who learned information about Oswald's visit there and attempted to pursue it, lost his career and committed suicide. And George de Mohrenschildt, the man who was close to Oswald and close to the CIA, and was ready to testify about what he knew about the assassination in 1978, when he committed suicide. So, I don't want to talk about that, you know, that's a whole different subject. You know, what the cause of those suicides was. I want to talk about what Underhill said and his fears that a small clique of CIA officials were behind Kennedy's assassination. Well, he had access to CIA people who were engaged in assassination activities. There's no doubt about that, and I think that gives his claim credibility, especially when you know, we don't know, did Garrett Underhill know about the CIA surveillance of Angleton? I mean, the Angleton surveillance of Oswald, we don't know, but it was only a small clique of CIA officials who knew about the surveillance of Oswald, basically the people around around Angleton in the CIA's counter intelligence staff. So that's what lends credence -- Gary Garrett Underhill's story is credible in the context of assassination operations, the surveillance of Oswald and all the deceptive CIA statements around that. You can find out more about AMWORLD here . Also known as Second Naval Guerilla. Designed to support and unite several Cuban exile groups under the leadership of Manuel Artime (AMBIDDY-1). The overall mission of AMWORLD was to foment a popular uprising in Cuba that would cause Castro's downfall. This document has more on AMWORLD . Not all assassination attempts occurred under AMWORLD. Jefferson Morley starts with the case of Gary Underhill. I have written blog posts about Underhill here , and here . Right off the bat, Morley gets the Underhill story wrong: Garrett Underhill was a arms dealer who worked with and was familiar with the personnel who worked on the AMWORLD project. He probably didn't know the cryptonym AMWORLD, but he was friends and colleagues with the men who did run that program. What Garrett Underhill did was keep track of arms sales. He was an arms dealer, and that was his world -- big shipments of weapons for CIA assisted forces and all over the world. Underhill was not an arms dealer. He was friends with Samuel Cummings who was an arms broker. John Donovan, an acquaintance who wrote Jim Garrison, claimed that Underhill had a "letter of marque" from the Israelis which authorized him to sell Israeli machine guns. Here is an excerpt from his letter to Garrison: Allegedly a gunrunner to Latin America took the model machine gun away from Underhill because of his erratic behavior, but the investigator is convinced that Underhill 'got around and was knowledgeable.' I see no evidence that this make sense, let alone is true. Most of Underhill's career was in journalism. You can read more about Underhill here : Underhill was a domestic contact of the CIA from November 1949 until the mid 1950s. Underhill was suffering from a variety of problems since his separation from his wife. Here is a letter that a colleague wrote to John Donovan, the acquaintance that would write to Garrison: Here is a 1964 letter from the police department about Underhill's suicide: Gary Underhill was not in the CIA and and he had no special knowledge of the assassination . Here is an excerpt from a note written by Ed Cohen, a stringer for Ramparts Magazine: Asher Byrnes, a friend who found Underhill's body, said that Underhill's reasoning "was based on deductive logic from the press accounts, and as far as he knows he had no closer connection to the crime than the newspapers like everyone else." Morley then goes on a riff about suicides: Somebody learns something disturbing about the assassination, talks about coming forward with it, is bothered by it, and then commits suicide. Is there anything that ties these deaths together? Dorothy Kilgallen had no special knowledge about the assassination, and she had lots of time to tell her supposed story - she died in November of 1965. And was it even suicide? Here is excerpt from an article by Eric Paddon: Someone might be able to prove someday that there was more to Dorothy Kilgallen's death than met the eye that night. But if someone succeeds in doing that, he will still not be able to show that it could have had any remote connection with the JFK assassination. If one encompasses everything she knew at the time of her death, it is clear that she did not have a clue as to what the truth really was. Her entire investigation had consisted of shoddy detective work on her part, coupled with false and misleading information from a dishonest gentleman named Mark Lane. Had she been able to tell the world everything she knew on the night of her death, they would have been given another sneak preview of some of the stories Mark Lane would trumpet in his book Rush To Judgment , as well as a possible preview of some of Jim Garrison's outlandish assertions that culminated in his witchhunt against Clay Shaw. In both instances, Kilgallen had been nothing more than a courier, not an investigator. In the early morning hours of November 8, 1965, just four hours after doing the live broadcast of "What's My Line?" and not long after she had left her next-day's column under the door of her apartment, Dorothy Kilgallen died under circumstances that remain puzzling to this day. The official explanation of complications from barbituates and alcohol remains dubious to some people because they felt that Kilgallen was largely over her addictions by 1965, especially since she had recently begun a happy affair with a gentleman Israel describes as "The Out-Of-Towner". The tape of the "What's My Line?" broadcast however, clearly shows her slurring her speech at various points (not "crisply perfect" as Israel falsely claims). None of this affected her game-playing abilities, which were always superior to any other member of the panel, but it is clear that she was not in the best of health that particular night. In 1978, HSCA counsel Robert Blakey asked for a review of Kilgallen's autopsy (a copy of which is in the JFK Assassination files in the National Archives), but he and his staff evidently found nothing worth pursuing since no mention of Kilgallen ever made it into the final report. This is not the first time that Morley's website has discussed Kilgallen , and don't anticipate it will be the last. I covered the Kilgallen story here . Charles Thomas was a foreign service officer stationed at the American Embassy in Mexico City in the early 1960s . He met Elena Garro who told him that she had met Oswald at a party in September of 1963. The HSCA published several documents about Charles Thomas and his attempt to tell his story. As you can see, Thomas told his story in letters to the State Department in 1969. The Washington Evening Star of June 7, 1971 had an article about the firing of career diplomats in the State Department and Charles Thomas was featured: Charles Thomas told his story in 1969, and he committed suicide in 1971. His death was tragic, but it was not related to the assassination. Lastly, Morley brings up George de Mohrenschildt whom he claims was "ready to testify about what he knew about the assassination in 1978, when he committed suicide." Once again, de Mohrenschildt had lots of time to tell his story and he even wrote a manuscript which is widely available . Unfortunately, de Mohrenschildt was suffering from mental illness and he had attempted suicide four times before he succeeded. Here is a report from a friend of the family : Here is an article by Earl Golz in the Dallas Morning News of April 1, 1977 : A sjmilar story was in the Dallas Times Herald of March 31, 1977 : Here is an excerpt from the testimony of Willem Oltmans before the HSCA : de Mohrenschildt told Oltmans his story : Who was after de Mohrenschildt? Towards the end of his testimony, Oltmans is asked if he thought de Mohrenschildt committed suicide : Once again, Jefferson Morley over-reaching in his conclusions. The Underhill document released last week was a CIA document discussing an article in Ramparts Magazine . This document has been around for many years, and the redacted material was not about Underhill but about one of his friends. All of the suicides mentioned in this article, and Kilgallen's death from an overdose, were tragic but they are not connected with each other, and they are not mysterious. • In Search of an Oswald Operation, Part Three

Jefferson Morley claims that the CIA did not believe the lone-gunman theory. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (42:10) Jefferson Morley : And so the organization chart [of JMWAVE in Miami] tells us at least how many people Joannides had working for him when Oswald was under surveillance. The organization chart is also useful in another JFK story that has emerged in recent years, and that's a story that we didn't know till, I think 2017 and that was -- this one, when I tell people this one, their eyes kind of open, okay, because we hear a lot about this is all a nothing burger, and everybody knows that one man shot the president for no reason, and anybody who doubts that is kind of crazy. Well, the important thing to know is what we now know is the CIA itself did not believe the lone gunman theory. And a document that emerged in 2017 showed that. It showed that the CIA station, a couple of days after Kennedy was killed, and a couple days after Oswald was killed, the CIA station launched an effort to query all of its agents in South Florida with a series of questions, and all of these questions focused on anti-Castro, anti-JFK, Cubans known to the CIA station. The CIA did not consider for a moment that Oswald was the sole gunman. They believed that Oswald was dead and somebody else might well have been involved. And they gave these questions. There were like five questions, and all of the officers in the station were asked to go query their agents. So you had a couple hundred officers in that station, and each officer might have five to ten agents. So the officer who told about this investigation said this was a, you know, this was a massive effort. I think that was the word that he used, Donald Heath was the name of the CIA officer. By the time the memo was released, he was dead. So we couldn't ask him a question about it, which is typical of how the CIA handles these things. But anyway, Heath's memo was plenty revealing, and the organization chart that we received can help us understand. Now, one of the things that we have requested through Representative Luna is the results of that investigation. The way it was described by the officer, the people who were tasked with collecting information from their agents, were asked to submit what are called Situation Reports, or SITREPS. And those were collated as part of the investigation. So, we're trying to track down the SITREPS of the Miami Station's investigation of the possible involvement of Cuban exiles in the JFK assassination. So, we've learned a lot. And, we've obtained a lot. But this one of the things that we didn't get, and were expecting to get, and so we're looking forward to getting because it will shed light on this question of what was going on with Oswald. And why the CIA itself did not think that he was solely responsible for the President's death. I am not sure exactly which document has the organization chart for the Miami Station or JMWAVE. This document has some details, and so does this document . Jefferson Morley wants the supposed SITREPS (Situation Reports) related to queries put out by Donald Heath in 1964. You can read the Heath memo here . Here is the relevant paragraph about what was asked of the Miami Station: There is nothing in the memo that says the CIA did not believe that a lone gunman killed JFK. That is, nothing in this memo suggests that Heath or the CIA thought there was a second gunman. The instructions are pretty clear -- "to contact our agents inside Cuba and our support agents in Miami for leads possibly linking Castro Cuba or the Cuban exile community to the murder." Interestingly, Morley says the instructions "focused on anti-Castro, anti-JFK, Cubans known to the CIA station," when, in fact, the instruction included Cuba. Heath wrote that the instructions went to his twelve case officers, and yet Morley believes that "a couple hundred officers" were given the task. Morley claims that Heath said it was a "massive effort" but those words do not appear in his report. Morley states that "By the time the memo was released [with his name unredacted], he was dead. So we couldn't ask him a question about it, which is typical of how the CIA handles these things." That's quite a claim. A better explanation is that the CIA regularly redacted names of CIA officers who wrote memos. Would we really need to question Heath? He wrote nothing about any of the reports the station received back, and a lot of the reports might not have been in writing: I wish Congresswoman Luna the best of luck in tracking down the supposed SITREPS. We sincerely would like to have such documents extracted from the existing ARC files or any other source This might be one of the SITREPS : 11/25/63: Cable from JMWAVE to Director, WAVE 8142: "IMMEDIATE ACTION. Sitrep 24 and 25 November 1963. I. INTELLIGENCE HIGHLIGHTS A. KUJUMP Intel nothing to report. B. WAVE intel nothing to report. C. KOLA AND KUTUBE-D nothing to report. D. Press and radio...DRE held Castro responsible for President's death, and recalled threats Castro made against Kennedy in remarks made (illegible) September 63. DRE also recalled Lee Oswald attempts infiltrate DRE and his clash with DRE in New Orleans earlier this year (WFAB 22 Nov)...OPERATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS..."Amidst exile rumors circulating in reference to Pres. Kennedy's death is story that Eloy Gutierrez Menoyo commented on 21 Oct that 'something very big would happen soon that would advance Cuban cause'. Possibly related is SNFE member Manuel Rodriguez, alleged to be violently anti-Kennedy, is living in Dallas, Texas. (see WAVE 8130)." There might be other SITREPS in the assassination collection, although they might not be easy to find. One thing is clear -- the Heath memo says nothing about what the CIA thought about the JFK assassination. It was completely proper to ask case officers in the field to query their agents about possible leads. Thank you to Paul Hoch for helping with some of the research for this article. • In Search of the Oswald Operation, Part Two

Jefferson Morley believes that James Angleton lied before the HSCA, and that this proves that Oswald was the "subject of a CIA project." Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (38:10) Jefferson Morley : Then there's a second document that I came across in the Angleton collection, the Angleton documents that were declassified, and this was Angleton's testimony to the House Select Committee on Assassinations in 1978. So the first testimony he gave was in 1975, he was still being called by congressional investigators three years later in 1978. And in 1978 he was asked two questions. He was asked the question: was Oswald ever the subject of a CIA project? And Angleton, speaking under oath, says, "no." The next question is, do you know a man named Reuben Efron? And Angleton says, "yes." Do you know what his job was? Mail intercept, okay. So Angleton's answers to the second and third question definitively show that his answer to the first question was false. He obviously did know that this man, Reuben Efron, was involved in mail surveillance of Lee Harvey Oswald. He was under oath and he lied about it. How do we know that? Well, there was no way to know that until April 2023, okay, sixty years after Kennedy's assassination. The CIA declassified a memo and said that a man named Reuben Efron was in charge of a CIA project of mail surveillance, and that Efron had read a letter from Lee Harvey Oswald's mother, and he had forwarded it to one of Angleton's aides in June 1962. So that's where we now can say, with confidence, that Angleton lied to congressional investigators about what he knew about the surveillance of Oswald. Again, some people consider that a nothing burger. I don't. I think that it's significant. Here is a link to Angleton's testimony before the HSCA : Goldsmith was asking about a card found in Oswald's 201 file , which included the words "CI PROJECT/RE. This was reported in detail here.  CI PROJECT referred to HTLINGUAL, and RE were the initials of an  employee who translated the document . If you follow the questioning, it is most probable that the question, "was Oswald ever the subject of any CIA project," really "was Oswald ever the subject of a CI project." And in the last section, the line "Mr. Goldsmith.. It could be, it is probably a mail intercept" was spoken by Angleton. Goldsmith clearly knew who Reuben Efron was. So, Reuben Efron worked on HTLINGUAL, and Oswald was on the watch list, but does this prove that Angleton was lying about Oswald not being the "subject of any CIA project."? Or CI Project? Unless anybody on the watch list is considered to be the subject of a counterintelligence operation. Morley's logic just escapes me. Reuben Efron learned of Lee Harvey Oswald's impending return to the United States in a 1962 Washington Post  article . He then searched the HTLINGUAL files and found a Marguerite Oswald letter to her son, and then wrote a memo to his superiors about what he had found : Efron wasn't monitoring Oswald. He was just noticed the news item about Oswald and thought there might be something in the HTLINGUAL files. He was right. You can read a previous blog post about Efron here . I wrote this in a previous blog post : To Morley, the so-called disclosure of Reuben Efron's name reinforces his view that there was some sort of undisclosed CIA operation surrounding Oswald. The truth may simply be that Oswald just happened to bump into a variety of sensitive but unrelated operations: surveillance of the Russian and Cuban embassies in Mexico City; opening of mail (not just his) to and from the Soviet Union; anti-Fair Play for Cuba Committee activities (not just against him) by the DRE; coverage of the mail of the Russian embassy in Washington D.C.; and even (back in 1960) the FBI's monitoring of 'funds transmitted to residents of Russia.' The sensitivity of all of these could easily make a lone-gunman assassination look conspiratorial. And have a look at my prediction : It's just a matter of time before another supposed discovery will, once again, confirm to Morley that there was a supposed "Oswald operation." Do all roads lead to Rome? In Morley's case, all the evidence, no matter how thin, leads to an Oswald operation. Coming up: The Heath memo once again. • Belief in a JFK Conspiracy Drops!

I watched Jefferson Morley's press conference this morning on the Joannides files that he wants released. I was not impressed as I have heard this story before and there was nothing new. The ARRB reviewed the Joannides personnel file and found nothing relevant to the JFK assassination. Of course, I still would like the CIA to release these documents. But what interested me was the poll on Americans attitudes regarding conspiracy in the JFK assassination. Here is a Gallup poll published in 2011 which I included in my book, I Was a Teenage JFK Conspiracy Freak. Here is what I wrote in my book: (pages 216 - 271) Most people still think there was a conspiracy. But there’s been a sea change in the last 20 years—the percentage of people who think that more than one person was involved has been steadily declining. In 2000, only 13 percent of people believed that only one man was involved in the assassination; by 2013 that had risen to 30 percent. I believe there are two reasons for this. First, there are now many good books that support a lone gunman. I remember that, when I first went to the college library in 1975, I could only take out conspiracy books (with the exception of the Warren Report). People who now become interested in the assassination will find a much healthier mix of books in their local libraries. Mark Lane’s Rush to Judgment will have less of an effect when you also read Gerald Posner’s Case Closed. Secondly, the rise of the Internet has also helped. There are several JFK debunking sites where you can “detox” after an allotment of conspiracy theory. John McAdams not only runs the best JFK web page out there , he also runs an excellent bulletin board. And on Facebook, there are many good JFK group pages (like Fair Play for JFK) that are reasonable. But what’s important here is that ‘lone-nutters’ can argue their case and can thus expose a lot of people to the truth. It’s no longer a one-way conversation—crackpot theories can be immediately rebutted. [Note: John McAdams is no longer with us, but his website is still online.] Here are the results of the latest poll conduced by Bendixen & Amandi International: Now, only 50% of people believe there was a conspiracy. And when you look at the numbers by age, you see the following: Younger people are more inclined to believe there was no conspiracy. This tells me that the trend towards believing there was no conspiracy will continue. Here is how the 50% of people who believe in conspiracy feel: Source: Bendixen & Amandi International When you combine the numbers together you come up with this: Lee Harvey Oswald was responsible: 38.0% Conspiracy but don't know who: 19.5% The CIA: 15.5% Don't know if conspiracy or not: 12.0% The Mafia 6.5% Cuba 3.5% USSR 3.0% Someone else 2.0% TOTAL 100.0% The one theory that garners the most support, by far, is that Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK by himself.

  • Jefferson Morley Doesn't Understand Jim Garrison's Homophobic Prosecution of Clay Shaw

Journalist Jefferson Morley published the first of several articles reviewing JFK assassination news in 2022 . Unfortunately, he includes this: In November 2021, the Washington Post published a piece attributing the enduring skepticism about the Warren Commission to, yes, homophobia. Morley is referring to Professor Alecia Long's article in the Washington Post last November, "Behind Americans’ continued fascination with John F. Kennedy’s assassination." His assertion about Long's article is just plain wrong. Long did not attribute "enduring skepticism" to homophobia; she discussed the homophobia of Jim Garrison: Garrison’s prosecution of a closeted businessman, Clay Shaw, in 1969 grew out of stories told by two New Orleanians the weekend after the assassination. In their original iterations, those tales had only two things in common: Lee Harvey Oswald and accusations that he had been associating with “known homosexuals” the summer before the assassination. Four years later, Garrison merged these stories to create the contention that Shaw had conspired with Oswald and another deceased conspirator to kill Kennedy. The jury at Shaw’s trial returned a unanimous not guilty verdict. This failed prosecution remains the only assassination-related conspiracy case ever heard in a court of law. A close reading of records related to Shaw’s prosecution shows how Garrison’s investigation was facilitated by long-standing suspicions of gay men. Multiple sources also demonstrate how a broad cultural homophobia made Shaw and his alleged co-conspirators suspect to a generation of Americans primed to believe that gay men were sex criminals likely to commit all manner of deviant acts, up and to and including murder. In short, historical scholarship and the evidence at the National Archives make it clear that Garrison’s prosecution of Shaw, who was accused of acting with Oswald and another man, was largely conducted to provide a public forum for questioning the Warren Commission’s conclusion that Kennedy was killed by a lone gunman. This is not the first time Morley has done this. He published an article in CounterPunch last December saying much the sam e thing. In a sustained attack on Stone in the Washington Post, professor Alecia Long argued that Garrison’s investigation was motivated by homophobia. Shaw was a closeted gay man and Garrison used his private life to smear him, she contends in a new book. Long’s unsubtle implication is that anyone who believes Kennedy was killed by his enemies is an ignorant bigot prone to QAnon-type fantasies. If Long thinks that Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, Charles De Gaulle and Fidel Castro were deluded fabulists driven by homophobia, her argument is unconvincing, if not totally wrong. Researcher Tracy Parnell took Morley to task for that column : But Morley has done exactly what he accuses Long of doing—created a straw man. Nowhere in her article does Long mention Truman, DeGaulle or Castro in any form. While she does mention Johnson, she does not suggest that the 36th president was a homophobic fabulist. Long’s book focuses on the homophobic nature of Garrison’s investigation and is the second book to do so. Obviously, Morley did not read Mr. Parnell's excellent article. And, of course, James DiEugenio had to chime in with a ridiculous comment : By the way, Alecia Long's book, Cruising for Conspirators: How a New Orleans DA Prosecuted the Kennedy Assassination as a Sex Crime , is essential reading . Martin Kelly has written a terrific review of Alecia's terrific book. It is a bit unusual to find research of this caliber in the literature on the JFK assassination. That it exposes Garrison’s tabloid-themed prosecution, without invoking Garrison’s own history of mental problems or making anything out of the later accusation that he groped a 13-year-old boy in New Orleans, gives it a sound rationality as rebuttal to Garrison sycophants. Cruising for Conspirators might well be read as an inoculation against whatever fiction Oliver Stone will deliver in his new documentary. • Jefferson Morley asks why "what the CIA knew about Herminio Diaz is still off limits."

In a recent substack column, Jefferson Morley talks about his examination of 33 CIA file s. What was unsurprising, unfortunately, was the pattern of deception found in the releases. The CIA claimed it had released 10,095 of 11,275 previously redacted documents. Rex Bradford and I did some fact checking. To test the reality of the apparently sweeping disclosure, we examined 33 redacted documents that we thought were potentially interesting about the events of 1963. They included: — the 1963 job description of Ann Goodpasture, a rare female CIA officer of that era, who knew all about the CIA’s surveillance of accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before Kennedy was killed. —the closed-door testimony of a CIA officer familiar with Oswald’s visit to the Cuban and Soviet diplomatic offices in Mexico City in October 1963. —a redacted FBI report on a Cuban sharpshooter named Herminio Diaz whose friends —and Fidel Castro’s intelligence service—came to believe had been a gunman in Dealey Plaza. Morley complains that only 13 of the 33 files are available in unredacted form,. And Morley still believes that the Diaz document is still redacted. What the CIA knew about Herminio Diaz is still off limits to you and me. You don’t have to be a conspiacy theorist to wonder why. Of course, this document is an FBI document which was probably sent to the CIA. Here is the file that Morley linked to : However, had he even done a cursory search on the Mary Ferrell website, he could have found a minimally redacted copy of the relevant part of that FBI document : You can tell it's the same document by the markings after the paragraph which starts, "On July 24, 1965." I suspect that more examples like this will turn up in the next few days. Now, was the redacted information "assassination-related." I am not so sure.

  • The Schlesinger Memo Unredacted!

Jefferson Morley has been writing about Arthur Schlesinger's memo on the CIA since 2022. Let's have a look at what he said, and then see how well that holds up now that the memo is unredacted.. First, there is this : The Schlesinger memo is an origin story, the origins of the CIA’s role in the tragedy of November 22, 1963 as found in the last of the JFK files. CIA apologist Fred Litwin says this “famous memo” has already been made public. Yet, in the National Archives JFK collection, the memo is redacted as of the last public release in December 2022. If the Schlesinger memo has been declassified somewhere, Trump is obliged to release it immediately. Morley also says that : The Schlesinger memo is one of many origin stories of the tragedy of November 22, 1963, found in the new JFK files. And then he said : Schlesinger’s memo, written two and a half years before Kennedy’s assassination, cannot shed new light on what happened on November 22, 1963. But it will likely shed light on the hostility between Kennedy and the CIA that led JFK’s immediate successors to suspect Agency personnel might have had a hand in the Dallas ambush. That’s the most likely explanation for the CIA’s redaction. And this : That’s why the Goodwin and Schlesinger memos are censored sixty years after they were written: to protect the CIA’s impunity. Note that, at one point, Morley thought there were two memos on the CIA, but, in fact, the Goodwin memo was simply his copy. Morley goes overboard with posts like this : Morley also gives this memo importance that is totally undeserved : While the redaction seeks to conceal, the white blot of censorship is inadvertently revealing all the same. The redaction of Schlesinger’s post-Bay of Pigs memo lends credence to President Richard Nixon’s suspicion that JFK’s assassination originated in what he often referred to as “the Bay of Pigs thing.” Nixon voiced that suspicion in October 1971 when he demanded that CIA director Richard Helms produce the Agency’s internal history of the Bay of Pigs invasion. The president needed know more about “the who shot John angle,”  he said ominously. Helms deflected Nixon’s request. But eight months later when Nixon’s chief of staff H.R. Haldeman warned Helms that his failure to help block the investigation of the Watergate burglary might “blow the Bay of Pigs thing,” Helms knew he was attempting to blackmail the CIA over JFK’s death. Helms exploded in anger. Morley has gotten the phrase 'who shot John?' all wrong. Of course, the Schlesinger memo made Morley's list of the top 15 documents for Congresswoman Luna's investigators : The memo even had implications for the last election: Consider this censored memo , written in 1961 by White House aide Arthur Schlesinger Jr. when JFK was considering “reorganizing” the CIA. In it, historian Schlesinger explained the CIA’s “encroachment on policy-making functions” properly belonging to the president. In 2024, the Agency now suppresses an entire page of Schlesinger’s memo, which effectively deprives American voters of key information about presidential handling of the secretive agency that millions of Americans deeply mistrust and that a leading presidential contender — the nephew of the slain president! — often criticizes. Thus the CIA’s hidden hand limits discussion in the 2024 election, a claim no fact-checker can refute. But it was possible to figure out what was in the redacted section. Once I knew the redacted section was about "Controlled American Source (CAS)," (an obscure term of art that [at least sometimes] refers to CIA officers under cover), I decided to have a look in Schlesinger's book on the Kennedy administration. And sure enough there was a large section on this issue . The CIA’s budget now exceeded State’s by more than 50 per cent (though it was less than half that of the intelligence operations of the Defense Department). Its staff had doubled in a decade. In some areas the CIA had outstripped the State Department in the quality of its personnel, partly because it paid higher salaries and partly because Allen Dulles’s defiance of McCarthy enabled it to attract and hold abler men. It had almost as many people under official cover overseas as State; in a number of embassies CIA officers outnumbered those from State in the political sections. Often the CIA station chief had been in the country longer than the ambassador, had more money at his disposal and exerted more influence. The CIA had its own political desks and military staffs; it had in effect its own foreign service, its own air force, even, on occasion, its own combat forces. Moreover, the CIA declined to clear its clandestine intelligence operations either with the State Department in Washington or with the ambassador in the field; and, while covert political operations were cleared with State, this was sometimes done, not at the start, but after the operation had almost reached the point beyond which it could not easily be recalled. By the way, the title of the section was initially released in 2018. The fact that Schlesinger's book covered this topic meant that it was not too sensitive to be made public. My friend Larry Haapanen found that Washington Post journalist George Lardner had written about this in 1975 : And now we can compare what Lardner wrote to the unredacted memo : The Controlled American Source (CAS) represents a particular aspect of CIA's encroachment on policy-making functions. CIA today has nearly as many people under official cover overseas as State -- 3900 to 3700. About 1500 of these are under State Department cover. The Lardner article is totally bang on with regard to the number of CIA employees operating under cover -- 3,700 - and the total number of State Department employees operating overseas -- 3,900. The Lardner article notes that "At the CIA's inception 28 years ago, according to one knowledgeable source, the use of State Department cover was supposed to be "strictly limited and temporary." The Schlesinger memo notes that "Originally the use of State Department cover for CIA personnel was supposed to be strictly limited and temporary." The Lardner article said there were more than 125 people operating under cover in Paris, and the Schlesinger memo says there were 128 people. The Schlesinger memo does have specifics on the Vienna embassy which is not mentioned in the Lardner article. The Schlesinger memo caught the attention of the New York Times : Tim Weiner, a former New York Times reporter and the author of a 2007 history about the C.I.A., said that the agency has nearly always followed the orders of presidents, including when Kennedy authorized the Bay of Pigs invasion. “The straw man that Schlesinger creates is of a C.I.A. that does things of its own accord,” Mr. Weiner said. Mr. Weiner said he saw no compelling reason for the section of the memo about the State Department to have remained classified for so many years. Keeping such things classified, he said, “pumps the paranoid fear of a deep state.” Weiner is right -- the section on Controlled American Source should never have been fully redacted, however, it might certainly have been reasonable to redact some of the details. And Morley now has a different reason why the section had been redacted: Rather than protect sensitive national security information, he said, the redactions were “to save the C.I.A. from embarrassment and criticism.” And, of course, the conclusion of the Schlesinger memo had not been redacted: Certainly JFK did not accept the major recommendations above . (page 428 - 429 in the Kindle edition of A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House ) The Bay of Pigs, of course, stimulated a wide variety of proposals for the reorganization of the CIA. The State Department, for example, could not wait to separate the CIA’s overt from its clandestine functions and even change the Agency’s name. The President, consulting closely with James Killian, Clark Clifford and the other members of his Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, decided not to go that far. The Agency itself suffered from doubt and gloom after Cuba, and it was feared that drastic measures would cause total demoralization. Instead, Kennedy moved quietly to cut the CIA budget in 1962 and again in 1963, aiming at a 20 per cent reduction by 1966. At the same time, anticipating the resignation of Allen Dulles, he began looking for a new director. Under Eisenhower the need had been for an authoritative interpreter of the flow of intelligence; here Allen Dulles, with his perceptive and flexible sense of the political ebb and flow, was ideal. But Kennedy, Bundy and the White House staff preferred to interpret intelligence themselves. They sought, not an intellectual oracle, but a sensible and subdued manager of the government’s intelligence business. In addition, the President thought it politically prudent to have a CIA chief conservative enough to give the Agency a margin of protection in Congress. Many covert operations had already moved to the Defense Department. New York Times, April 29, 1961 Here is what Tim Weiner, in his book Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA , said about John and Robert Kennedy: (page 180) In his wrath after the Bay of Pigs, John Kennedy first wanted to destroy the CIA. Then he took the agency's clandestine service out of its death spiral by handing the controls to his brother. It was one of the least wise decisions of his presidency. Robert F. Kennedy, thirty-five years old, famously ruthless, fascinated with secrecy, took command of the most sensitive covert operations of the United States. The two men unleashed covert action with an unprecedented intensity. Ike had undertaken 170 major CIA covert operations in eight years. The Kennedys launched 163 major covert operations in less than three. Kennedy revamped covert action. He set up the Special Group, or the 303 Committee, to oversee the clandestine service with McGeorge Bundy as its chairman: (page 181) The members were McCone, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and senior deputies from Defense and State. But until very late in the Kennedy administration it was left to the CIA's covert operators to decide whether to consult with the Special Group. There were more than a few operations that McCone [Director of the CIA after Dulles] and the Special Group knew little or nothing about. In November 1961, in the greatest secrecy, John and Bobby Kennedy created a new planning cell for covert action, the Special Group (Augmented). It was RFK's outfit, and it had one mission: eliminating Castro. The rest is history. A big thank you to Larry Haapanen, Paul Hoch and Robert Reynolds. Larry found the George Lardner article; and Paul and Robert helped me with research. Update Jefferson Morley won't leave this story alone : There are questions about the supposed JFK quote of splintering the CIA . Rather than saying that Kennedy said this to friends, it would be more accurate to say that the New York Times claimed in 1966 that Kennedy had said this to a (high-ranking), (unnamed), subordinate. There is a difference. Previous Relevant Blog Posts on Jefferson Morley Jefferson Morley's Clairvoyance Morley somehow knows what is in the supposed 2,400 recently-discovered FBI files.
