I understand your argument but do not accept your analogy. I hope we can agree to disagree on this one.

The purpose of Truth and Consequences was to avoid disclosing expenses by the prosecutor's office. The reason why we have public auditors and strict rules on the use of money is so we can determine if public money is being misused. In this case, Garrison's purpose was clear - he was pissed off that the newspapers published expense accounts from his office, and Truth and Consequences was a way around public disclosure. Again, if Donald Trump funneled private money into a DOJ investigation into Hunter Biden's laptop, it would have a serious breach of ethics

Surely Truth Or Consequences was subsidising an inquiry into the assassination of the Head of State, not the admitedly questionable prosecution of a prominent NO citizen? If they had specifically underwritten the prosecution of Shaw, that would, I agree, have been not only wrong, but, I would have thought, actionable by Shaw's lawyers.

Of course, the newspapers published a lot of testimony. They also published just about every utterance from Garrison about a variety of conspirators. They loved it. But check out this blog post: https://www.onthetrailofdelusion.com/post/two-states-item-reporters-were-also-working-for-garrison

There were no instructions from the bench regarding coverage of the investigation. Clay Shaw's defense team felt horribly let down by the uncritical reporting of the Times-Picayune and the States-Item (they both had the same publisher).

As for Truth and Consequences. I cannot believe anybody would think it would be ok if Donald Trump had donated money to the Justice Department for their Hunter Biden investigation, so to keep the counting of expenses away from the public.

I have to bow to Fred's detailed knowledge. We must disagree on the ethics of Truth or Consequences. To me, for a consortium to subsidise an investigation within the purview of the DA's office and of national interest but not directly related to day to day law enforcement seems reasonable and public-spirited. My copies of the NO press's reports of the trial are in store, but - correct me if I'm wrong - one of the papers did indeed publish proceedings verbatim, while also reporting highlights in summary, and my memory, admittedly fallible, tells me that this was a consequence of instructions from the bench. I cannot see why they should have expended so much newsprint otherwise. Obviously I c…
