Why Did Richard Case Nagell Shoot Up the First National Bank of El Paso?

Updated: Oct 11, 2021

In September 1963, Richard Case Nagell entered a bank, demanded American Express Travelers Checks, fired two shots in the ceiling of the bank, and then tried to escape. I blogged about this here.

I included a significant amount of evidence that Nagell had mental issues because of brain injuries sustained during a plane crash in 1954. In 1966 he was examined by a psychiatrist and Nagell opened up about the bank.

The report notes that "... Nagell emphasized to Dr. Parlato very carefully that his whole purpose of entering the bank in El Paso was for the purpose of obtaining psychiatric help and treatment, and not for the purpose of actually robbing the bank. He kept emphasizing this throughout the interview."

The breakup of his marriage was a significant event:

I have already published the findings of the appeals court which showed that Nagell sustained physical damage to his brain.

And I have also published the court case which award full a full disability pension to Richard Case Nagell.

I find the explanation that the purpose of shooting up the bank was to get psychiatric attention far more convincing than the explanation that he shot up the bank so that he would be in custody when Oswald killed JFK.
